I remember this game. It was the most entertaining game of cricket I ever watched because of the high scores and uncertainty down to the wire. Lance Cairns was amazing that day.
I have no idea why I never watched this game, I was cricket mad at the time and was always watching or playing. It just doesn't ring a bell at all yet I remember the Caines 6 6's v Australia like it was yesterday.
Don't quote me, but I think at this point NZ's score was the highest total in a 50 over ODI. Australia then scored more than 300 in the second final at the same tournament. Sadly NZ couldn't chase that one down.
Actually, a score of 300 was unheard of. Australia did it in the second final a week or two later, and I think it was an all-time first in the history of 50-overs ODIs.
New Zealand have always been a tough resiliant cricket team. Always liked them. Always gave australia a competitive match. Especially at the sydney cricket ground.
I remember this well..... I was in Christchurch listening on radio.... I could not believe that NZ could get that score; it seemed so big at the time, but average these days. Also England seemed like giants to us kiwis, so it was doubly exciting.
Thanks. I remember watching this at my grandparents house wen I was a young kid. I'd love to see more from this series... It was when my love of cricket developed.

Well played and well batted New zealand. A great team effort chasing that BIG score... Congrats all the way from australia . 😃😎
Greatest run chase before 434 by South Africa. In fact this game served as an example of how to chase in odis
Fabulous for David Gower. He was a hero when it comes to cricket.
Forty years ago today. For those who also watched this unforgettable game live it is a little unbelievable how many years have passed by, hey?
40 years mate - i know hard to get my head around it, i remember the game so well, sir richard man of the match what a great he was
I remember this match as a boy. The scores were huge for those days. A score of 300 was rare.
Me too, remember watching that game at home in Wgtn. This was the summer that made cricket huge in NZ

Gosh some of these NZ bowlers had some funny looking bowling actions
I recall watching this game as a teenager, best game of cricket I’ve ever seen. New Zealand did well to reach such a big target.

One of the greatest ODI ever seen. Legendary match which makes a mockery of today's supposed cricket.
amen buddy no short boundaries in those days
I reckon this game’s highlights were shown on national tv here in India on the show ‘Sunil Gavaskar presents’ sometime in the late EIGHTIES.
Excellent bating by NZ player's
The class of Gower was brilliant. Jesty was mind blowing
Great job need more matches 80+90
When broadcast in NZ we only saw from when Hadlee and Coney batted. So it was interesting all these decades later to see the beginning of the chase.
Gower had that panache. Amazing player. Made runs briskly without looking violent.

Another Brilliant Upload Keep It up

Great Chase By Newgeland.
Who’s Newgeland? 🤨
This was the result of Willis and his mad selection policy - three off spinners, no opening batsmen, no Edmonds, no Dilley - appalling really
Edmonds and Dilley weren't in the touring party that season.
Catches win matches...
Please mor uploud gam in this serise
Amen
RIP poor English!!!!

Your a nutter.
4 dropped catches? well there's your game
English fielding LMAO!!
Was this Sir Ian's first game as opener for England?
Good question.
Pretty sure he opened in the rain reduced overs game played the previous weekend at the mcg. This woukd have been his 3rd game as opener
if it hits the boundary fence on the full isn't it 6?
Nope that is four
Shit fielding loses games
that many dropped catches ... match fixing??
No. Just shit fielding.
makes one wonder
