I saw your channel for the first time today and I want to say that your words helped me decide on my degree very much. I will enter the Faculty of Musicology at the University of Vienna in a year. Thank you :)

    Hello Dr. Elphick!
I had the good fortune to study music at Royal Holloway from 2017 to 2018 and have fond memories of your Historical Musicology, Short History of Music and Music Analysis courses. Your insights on composers' intentions (especially with regard to Shostakovich), genius and historically informed performance were invaluable during my time at the college and subsequently at King's College London, where I received a first. Thank you for the inspiration, your guidance on managing readings and, most importantly of course, your warning about the difficulty of Adorno.
P.S. Please feel free to peruse two compositions I uploaded to my channel.

Thanks for your videos. I love your channel. My two cents to prospective music students:
I have written a historically/politically engaged masters thesis in musicology, been to Europe several times to study music, studied two languages in music school, served in the US military as a musician, and started a business teaching music. Among my concerns about music school were having to give up other interests in the pursuit of music, or being pigeonholed in my professional options. While music is a competitive and often difficult world, the range of opportunities is far broader than I could have ever imagined. Just keep an open mind. Additionally, music schools are often big on funding and scholarships so you might find yourself in less debt than a lot of your friends if you choose your school(s) right.
