It's like talking in the middle of an opera, you don't do it when you're taking it in. Their commentary was also very surface level as a result.

    They didn’t even talk about how most people didn’t go for his speech. They thought he was promoting communism. Of course they thought that before he made it, and just used it as more fuel to exile him. He ended up having his visa pulled and had to live in Switzerland.

    In a song called "Iron sky" by Paolo Nutini, this speech was in the middle of the song.... And omg it made me shiver.... The man never spoke but when he did he said what no politician has ever said.... Hats off to Charlie

    this is basically what the speech warns of, because while we have advanced, and to an extent evolved, we haven't truly changed. the negative mentalities of old are still plaguing the new generation because of those in the older generation who have the problem and won't let go of it. new problems keep spriging up due to the effect of this form of aged negativity, and i personally agree with one thing that the speech is essentially saying, it needs to stop.

    For all these kids saying "This is soooo relevant today" don't understand that the older generations see where all this social unrest will take us. They don't seem to grasp that we've been through this before, the names may be different but there are not many problems today that humanity has never seen before. The meaning of that old saying 'If you ignore history you are doomed to repeat it' must have flown right over these kids' heads. Every generation of young people have worried that we are a few years away from the end of the world, and every generation of young people believe today's social issues are completely unique.

    The amazing thing is, that it isn't just relevant from then until now, but that it has been relevant before that. No matter where or when in history, there are always conflicts that result from intolerance and the need if certain individuals to rise above others. It's sad though, really

    Hitting right before the end? WW2 started in 1939 this was almost at the very beginning (1940) not right before the end (which is even more astonishing)

    As good as the speech is, I think the phrase "we think too much and feel too little" isnt quite true. It should be "we EMPATHIZE too little", too many people using selfish feelings as facts

    I feel like the message of Charlie’s speech will get muddled in today’s political climate. People will interpret it as “let’s unite against the left” or “let’s unite against trump” which only divides our people even more. It makes me sad that we live in a time where something that was used to unite is now doing the opposite

    Man, knowing the whole speech, I start crying from the very beginning. It's still so moving and powerful although it's a long time since I first watched this video...     We watched the great dictator and talked about this speech in history class in 9th grade (Germany). I can remember vividly how touched I was by that and I'm happy, that through FBE kids are being exposed to this speech again

    5:22 - Charlie Chaplin was NOT born in Switzerland, he was born in London, England.

    The Great Dictator is in my top ten films list. I encourage those who reacted and those in the comments to watch it. If I remember correctly from Chaplin's autobiography, that particular speech came from the heart. It's a fantastic movie, a comedy but with a powerful speech.

    6:25 These guys are aware that Chaplin was British and that Britain had been at war with Germany for a year when the film came out, right?

      The film was actually written, and had started shooting just before the war broke out. Even the UK wanted to Ban the film due to its criticisms/mockery of a certain man… But the UK revoked that decision when we joined the war at the end of ‘39. The ending was also allegedly changed from a whole comedy bit, to the now famous speech where Chaplin breaks character due to Germany invading France.

    When he talks about “machine men” he’s talking about the military who are men who take orders without thought. The military are the “machine men,” it’s not that civilians get subdued into being machines.

    They just talked over it, rather than listen to the message. In a sense, even the fbe and the reactors are guilty of what Chaplin said in this speech. Not in this video but in many other political reaction videos.
