After 5 years this video still produce valuable knowledge and save lives. A million appreciations.
Maybe to give an old camera new life. Thank you for your kind words.
Thank you so much!!! For $5.50 i just picked up a FM2, 3 lenses, and the flash attachment from a thrift store in an old camera bag. The lever was stuck. Did what you did; and now it works perfectly! The hardest part was making sure i used a screwdriver that fit and the right amout of pressure......a lot of pressure! Once again thanks!
it's 2023 and yes this video is still relevant! My fm2n had this exact issue, and one little push got the shutter wound going again. The trickiest thing was the 3 screws at the bottom plate. One of the screws was on its way to being completely stripped, and I had no idea until I started unscrewing (got my camera secondhand). Had to get special tiny screw drivers and was able to safely remove the screw! Thanks again
I just inherited this from my dad, who inherited it after his adopted fater passed away. It was having issues with shuttering like this. Thankfully, watching this (and one other) video helped me to get the camera working again. I really do appreciate it.
Very good to hear of your successful repair.
Used this video as my guide to fix my FM2 and it works. Was quoted for $280 for this fix. Thank you so much.
Hoo Haw! It worked. RUclips comes through again. Thanks so much for posting this very clear, concise, authoritative tutorial on fixing this problem with the Nikon FM2. I did as you suggested and it fixed my FM2. I'm very happy.
I just bought the Nikon F3 & The guy said the shutter wasn’t working so hopefully it’s an easy fix like this 👏🏽 thanks a bunch
Thank you so much I have an FG and it looked slightly different but I was able to fix it thanks to this video. You have no idea how happy I am thank you!!!
Thank you sooooo much for this, I'm trying to fix my dad's Nikon FA right now. He stopped using it for about a decade and now there's quite a lot of work to be done. Corroded battery contacts, jammed shutter, something stuck in the lens (probably mold, it's brown), etc. Wish me luck.
Also, how do I remove the bottom screws easily? Just like I said, the camera was left untouched for a decade and the bottom screws got stuck, how do I fix it? I managed to remove one but it was a real pain in the hind end.
Apply heat from the tip of a soldering iron to the head of the screw. Of course do not allow the hot iron to come in contact with any plastic parts of the camera.
Also, make sure you are using a good quality 2.5mm or #0 JIS Crosspoint screwdriver.
good luck... Keep'em going.
thank you so much: you really made happy. My FM2 now works again and we are back together!
Very good to hear.
I did it without having to unscrew the bottom. Just fiddled with that part from the outside a little and now it’s working 😃
I made it!!! I fixed my FM2! Thank you so much!!
Good to hear of your successful repair.
YOU ARE GREAT BLOODY GREAT,, today my FT2 I just bought did this, I thought nothing to lose took the base off, YES, not the same but now working
Excellent to hear of your successful repair.
Nice, concise video. I have the same problem, haven't opened up the camera yet to fix it, but... What is the REAL source of the sticking lever? Exercising the mechanism gives prompt, temporary relief, but how do you fix it permanently? I am imagining a drop of denatured alcohol to dissolve some lubricant that has turned to wax over the years. Where would that be?
thanks for this video 🙂
my nikon fm2n now working well 👏
Very good to hear.
Brilliant! The problem was exactly as you described and now it is fixed! Thank you.
Thank you for this video I was able to fix my Nikon FM2n.
Excellent video. Thanks for the lesson. My Nikon FM2 is back in action again. Cheers.
Great to hear of your success.
Thank you for such a simple way to fix the problem. however, this problem kept happening again and again once in a short while. is that any permanent method of fixing the issue. Thank you!
Try to determine what is causing the wind inter lock lever to hang up. Possibly a spot of light oil on the pivot point would help it to work properly.
@@FixOldCameras Can you be more specific about the pivot point to oil? Thanks in advance!
i love this channel...thank you!!!
FM2n saved! Thanks!
I have the similar problem with my FE2. When I brought it to a maintenance store they said a cogwheel is broken and it needs to be replaced. And this solution is only works for a short time in my case. I have another FE2 just for parts with a functional shutter mechanism. What kind of tools do i need to replace it myself?
I really thank you, boss. I don't have to pay $ 10 for just repairing shutter release.
Thank you for the comment and your interest in FOC.
I got same problem today, thanks to this video i could solved the probem!
Very good to hear of your successful repair.
I tried doing this fix but the mirror on mmy camera doesnt go back down. Is there a way to fix that?
Thank you. It help me a lot to fix my camera
Thank you fixed in 60 secs
Awesome! Just fixed my FM3a, thank you so much!
Good to hear of your successful repair.
This worked on my Minolta! Thanks so much
You're welcome.
Thanks for your video!! My nikon fm2, working now!!!
Right on. Keep'em going.
Thank You ! My FM2n works again
Very good to hear of your success.
Worked great for me, thanks so much!
Thanks from Ireland!! worked great
Outstanding and thank you for your interest in FOC.
Hi, first of all, great videos! I have been able to fix some problems of my Pentax and FM2 by watching your channel.
The shutters speed/ASA knob of my FM2 is not positioned correctly, therefore I do not know which Shutter speed I am using, and follow blindly my metering system. Could you let me know how to open the know to put it in the correct position?
Tried it on a Nikon FM, didn't work but shutter started working after greasing the wind mechanism shown in the video and also turning it with a coin.
Thanks mate. FM3A is now unstuck and firing.
Good to hear.
Hi FOC. I've just recently been gifted a beautiful Canon P. The only problem is an infrequent (1 in every 10 times, locks up), shutter not releasing unless I fiddle with the winder with my thumb. Any advice for me for my Canon P repair? TIA!
Sounds like it is not completing the wind cycle by just a wee amount.
You are exactly right! I've since checked with an old experienced camera repair shop, the guy showed me that I have to wind the winder 100%, not the 98% as I had been doing sometimes. Problem solved. Cheers FOC!
I got yashica tl electro x. All working fine, except for the lever transport. So every time i move and release the lever, shutter release immediately without even pressing the shutter button. Can you tell me what is wrong with my camera?
Sorry for my bad english. Looking forward to hear from you. Thank You
I fixed my fm2 with this method, but only for a while. After a few shots, it came back... and I have to rewind the film and pull it out of the canister with some magic tricks. I don't think this is a permanent fix.
Hii, I found an fm2 and the problem is I have push the small lever next to the mirror to get the mirror down and that enable to shutter to work but once I press the shutter the mirror will stay up and won't come down unless I manually push the mirror down again
Any tips of what to Google? Or if you have s video for that in your channel.. English is not my first language and to make it worst I'm not familiar with the terms or names of internal components of the camera
Thanks!! Fixed my Nikon Fm.
Good to hear of your successful repair.
Excellent video.
Thank you very much!
Can you use the double exposure lever to bypass the interlock lever, without opening the camera?
Thanks a million! Saved my life!
Good to hear the videos are helpful.
Good video, thank you! But the problem is that this happens every time in cold weather, how can i resolve this?
It happens in next day, how can I resolve this?
on my fm the winding works but the mirror doesnt open. its stuck up. i can manually reset it with the little lever in the lens area but once you press the shutter it just goes back up and doesnt flip open again
I'm having this problem on my minolta hi matic rangefinder. It had film in it. Will removing the bottom plate expose the film to light?
I have a Nikon FM10, the shutter won't release only when the lens is attached. I followed the video and it worked perfectly but the moment I screw the lens back in, it gets stuck again. How can I fix this? Thank you!
I saw the comment by oh Wild Child and the stop down lever on my camera seems to be in the correct position.
Possibly the aperture linkage on the lens is stiff and locking the camera up where it links to the camera body stop down lever. The stop down lever is on the left hand side of the mirror box when looking at the lens mount. Also, inspect the stop down lever on the camera body to make sure to see if it is bent or binding.
Thanks for all the great info and advice in your videos. I have a Nikon FM2n. The shutter speeds from 1/60 and slower on down to including bulb are not firing with their proper timing. They all are firing about 1/125. All of the faster speeds from 125 on up to 4000 are all firing correctly with the proper timing. I've had the shutter looked at by two different qualified repair shops and they both told me the shutter needs replacing but they can't find one at all because Nikon isn't making them. Is this shutter repairable? If so, how? Thank you in advance.
Seems like it should be, but perhaps not. If you would like to pursue a repair possibility go to the following link
www.phototronic.biz/services.html
Thanks. I'll give them a try.
What is general service maintenance?
Hello,
thank you for the video. I think I will try it, cause I've got a problem with my Nikon FM2...
When I press the shutter release without a lens on the camera, it works.
But when I put lens on my camera, the shutter release doesn't work at all or just sometimes.
The weird thing: when I press the Depth-of-field preview lever, afterwards the shutter releases for one time.
I'd be SO very happy if you could help me out.
Thank you very much.
The particular tweak outlined in the this video will not help with your Nikon FM2 repair issue. Your issue sounds like it might be caused by problems with the aperture stop down linkage. Confirm that the linkage on the lens is not stiff and causing the problem. If the lens aperture stop down moves freely and easily then the camera's linkage will have to be inspected for weakness or sluggishness.
Thank you for your quick answer. What exactly do you mean when you talk about the "linkage". Can you maybe show it on this photo? I uploaded a photo of my camera: img5.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/fm28ys7p5cudl.jpg
Your photo shows the aperture stop down lever bent from its proper position. A photo has been posted on the Fix Old Cameras Google Plus page showing the correct position of the stop down lever.
it work great, But how to fixing speed after fix it I have problem with 1/2000, 1/4000 are not full open which part I have to adjust it. Thank for your great video.
Good to hear. Those speeds are notoriously slow. Half framing is a mechanical issue and will require removal of the mirror box and full on access to the shutter.
@@FixOldCameras Its sound big issue, Thanks a lot.
It was jammed but now it works only with the M250 setting, otherwise if I for instance select 125 or any other aperture it jams and I have to select M250 for it to work again, I have a NIKON FE 2. Thanks!
Énis Samiri i got the same issue with the same camera
The FE2 is an electronic release except at the M250 setting. Is the meter coming on? Do you have battery power to the camera at a full 6 volts. Could their be a slight film of corrosion on the battery lid. (sometimes it is nearly invisible) If all things listed check out than it is most likely a failure of the release circuitry.
See additional comment and thank you for your interest in FOC.
Hi,
I've recently bought an Olympus Pen FT. Still on the 1st roll of film but the shutter release button has jammed 4 or 5 times now. After moving the lever forward completely, losing a shot or just a little crank does seem to remedy the problem in the moment.
Is there a permanent fix you might know of?
I've looked through your catalogue but saw no Pen FT videos.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
The camera probably needs general service as it sounds like the mechanism are sluggish and sticking.
Can i fix my Yashica mf 2 super shutter switch stuck problem like this?
Cool. Worked for me. Thanks for the advise.
Excellent to hear. Keep'em going.
Thanks for the repair tips. Been a fan since 2 years back. I have a bit problem with my Nikon FE and FG. Both of its frame counter seems to stuck/laggy. Would really appreciate it if you can help me out with this. Thanks!
You will need to remove the top covers and inspect the counter dial hub, engagement pawls, and return spring. Chance are good that the counter dial hub and post need to be cleaned. A tiny spot of light oil might also help. Thank you for your loyalty and continuing interest and support of Fix Old Cameras.
Fix Old Cameras I did that just now, and I accidentally broke the lever when I was putting back the shutter speed dial. Now it's just 'click-less'. Oh well.. I might have to get a cheap broken FG for parts. Don't think I could find just that one tiny piece anywhere else. Thanks again for your reply. I'll be more careful this time.
Ouch. This kind of thing happens even when approaching the problem carefully. No worries. Your persistence will pay off.
Do you have a flickr account? Would love to see the repairman's photography 😀
There are few photos in a collection (Random Thoughts and Shots) on the google plus page of FOC. More to be added as time allows.
I have a Konica Autoreflex T and I've tried following this video hoping that it would work out the same and eventually release, but its not. The wind lever is still not winding fully. Any suggestions for this type of camera?
So you wind the advance lever and it springs back as if under tension and the shutter is not cocked and you can wind it again with pushing the release button. The shutter cocking mechanism latch or latching spring might be the issue. The front plate needs to be removed to access. The shutter wind rack located and visible with the bottom cover removed might have slipped.
Damn I had this issue and I returned the FM I got a few months ago 😢. I mean the light meter was finicky also, so maybe them finding me another one is good.
Hello I'm having the same issue with my Minolta mg-x. I have managed to get the winder to operate but the button is still unresponsive. I can manually shoot a picture with the small tab internally, but can't seem to find the reason why the button can't operate it.
You probably have already done so, but check that a full three volts is available from the battery and that there is not an invisible film of corrosion on the battery cap. If that all checks out than a likely culprit might be the release capacitor.
If exercising the wind mechanism does not fix the problem do you recommend cleaning and lubricating the mechanism? If so where would you do this?
Thanks for the great videos!
If it continues to be an issue, it is likely in need of repair.
If this problem re occurs (probably every 40 times I hit the shutter) is there any home fixes I can do beyond this? Or should I take it to be serviced by a professional?
Depends on your willingness to pay others for work that you might be able to do or on your willingness to delve into the unknown and face the possibility of bricking your camera if things go way wrong. With persistence and patience is often surprising and rewarding what the novice repair results in a camera again working.
I'm having trouble with my Minolta XG-M everything worked fine once I put batteries in and I got the mirror un-jammed , however I noticed that the curtains would not allow any light in , the camera is in great condition so I was thinking the second curtain timing is off , could it be that or is there another problem I should look into ? If you guys could do a video on that it would be great and would be a major help
Thank you for you suggestion and interest in FOC. The curtain tension on the XG-M will often need to be addressed when the acts as you describe. Of course there is also the possibility of a holding magnet issue, a circuit issue or something mechanical.
Having this same issue on a leidolf lordomat 35 that I just inherited, but unfortunately it looks like it’s set up very differently from this.
Have you ever handled that camera??
Just a few. And it has been some time. If memory serves... it is not to bad, the top cover comes off has you would expect with a spanner and a slotted screwdriver. Maybe the name plate cap was problematic...
My Nikon FM3a has developed a new problem which, when the roll is wound for the next photo, the shutter curtain prepares into its spring position as it should do, but then pops open, rather than waiting for when I press the shutter release button. This leaves the roll exposed to light creeping past the mirror and ruining it. Any idea what is wrong?
The shutter mechanism is probably not get latched positively. Remove the bottom cover and observe the wind and latch sequence. You might possible be able to see an issue that is being caused by wind mechanism. If all looks well then the the shutter latch itself is not catching.
Hi, i have some several problems in my Nikon FM2. this perticular problem has drive me crazy, the shutter release stuck almost all the time, the mirror starting to stuck, and the curtain is kinda leaked open. could you guys give me a tips or a tutorial video on how to repair these problems? thank you so much!
Sometimes slight oil migration to the shutter curtain blades can cause them to stick erratically. That is not the only possibility causing your issue, but the most likely.
@@FixOldCameras thank you!
Terrific tip. Thanks.
Very good to hear of your success.
Thank you so much 💗
Thank you Uncle 🙏🏻
You are welcome.
How could you permanent resolve the issue? I did like you showed in the clip, but the issue reappears quite often.
It would probably require that the mirror box be pulled so that the linkage from the mirror could be inspected to see why it is not consistently tripping the interlock lever.
@@FixOldCameras Thank you.
I have a Nikon FE, my shutter wont release and the tiny level is not touching against the wind lever. Any suggestions?
Could be jammed because of an electronic release issue. Does it release when set to M90? If so then check the battery contacts for corrosion. The slightest bit of a film of corrosion on the battery lid in particular will block the current from the battery. If it does not release in M90, then remove the bottom of cover and check the wind interlock lever. This is the latching lever that prevents the camera from being wound until after a shutter release sequence.
How if the back cover stuck?
thank you sooo much this video really helped👌👌👌
Good to hear of you success.
I just bought a canon a-1 but my shutter locks the same way. Any tips on how to fix?
Many electronic issues that can cause the A-1 to not release. Without going through the possibilities start with mechanical and magnet checks. This AE-1 video will help with the A-1.
ruclips.net/video/PzjW9Y0WcuI/видео.html
of course... with release issues with the A-1, if you have not done so, check battery voltage for 6 volts.
Are the front piece (where is written "NIKON") of the FM2 and FM the same? I have one FM with a aperture window misaligned and someone offered me the corresponding piece from a FM2.
The lens mount bayonet will have to be removed to access the name plate on the FM2 and the FM. They should be interchangeable. Are you sure the issue is not the small mirror that reflects the image of the aperture setting to the prism?
@@FixOldCameras apparently, the camera received a hit of something hard a little below the "NIKON" name. It is deformed inwards, which made me consider its substitution.
@@rnakamine Well that makes sense. Might need to replace or tweak the front plate and address the mirror.
@@FixOldCameras understood. Thanks for this. Would you have or know any video(s) on this particular issue?
Does anyone know what size JIS screwdriver?
Can you guys please do a video on removing the top plate for a Minolta XD11/XD7?
Thank you for your suggestion and your interest in Fix Old Cameras.
amazing! thanks for the help!
Thank you for your interest in FOC.
Muchas gracias!
I've got a Nikon FA when I pull the winder and hit the shutter button, nothing happens. I've tried your method but was unsuccessful. What do you suggest? (I can feel the a click in the button but hear no shutter sound) This is a special camera and I would relly like to still use this camera in the future.
Does it release at the M250 setting? If so, than the mechanics of the shutter function are probably OK and you might have a sticking release magnet.
No it does not, I've tried every thing. On the side note, where exactly does the camera light meter sit (the position of the light meter) I recently bought a Yashica Fx-7 and and the light meter keeps on indicating an underexposed setting. My thought might be that it's dirty and thus reading something dark as a did buy the camera with some fungus inside the body.
As with your FX-7 and FA, the meter batteries on most classic cameras are located in the bottom... but not all, for instance the Canon Ftb has a battery chamber on the top cover end by the rewind knob. The meter galvanometer is almost always located between the prism and the rewind knob. The circuits often are nestled in next to the galvanometer or LED bank of the later electronic controlled cameras.
My lever is still stuck after following this video. What else could be the problem? Please help someone 😅
Man you saved me
I was hoping the insides were like the FM, but I wasn't lucky. This is precisely my problem but I have no idea what to do. :-(
Might be time for another FOC video featuring a Nikon FM with wind advance issues. Although, it is hard to say when such a video might appear.
Short simple repair!
Indeed.
Thank you so much!
You are welcome.
Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge, I m subbed now Thx
Good to hear from you.
ok so my Olympus Om-G camera has the same problem and I open the bottom cover and it's totally different.... well obviously, but I did some poking around and I was able to locate the shutter and release mechanism and I tried doing the whole jazz of it and it's still Stuck.... I don't know what's wrong, can you help me please😢
Make sure that the battery contacts are clean and the battery lid contacts are clean and polished. Make sure you have very good batteries in the camera. Check the position of the wind idler gear. Go to www.miketrost.com/archive.html and check out the position of the OM-1 idler gear by scrolling down to the photos. The wind idler gear position is the same for the OM-G.
Fix Old Cameras thanks hopefully this works
i have problem with Olympus Omg stuck any video for this
The FOC video on OM cameras idler gear jam up might help - ruclips.net/video/Y1mi6CTTSYw/видео.html
I have an nikon fg that only advances in m90 is this normal? i just bought and its my first nikon
The FG has an electronic release except on M90. Clean the battery contacts, including the inside of the battery lid if it has developed a film of corrosion. The battery lid might need to be lightly scraped if the film is stubborn. Install new known good batteries and see if the issue has been corrected.
I have a pentax espio 160. Everything works fine, but when I click the shutter button, the camera stop working and start making bizarre sounds...
An Espio 160 with buzzing sounds probably has gear/motor issues. The only way to repair such a camera would be to salvage parts from another and a non working donor camera would most likely have a similar problem. FOC presently has no videos for "point and shoot" cameras and has no plans to pursue featuring cameras of this type. Although they are particularly suited for "Lomography" and make fine users the point and shoot cameras do not lend themselves to the type of repair videos Fix Old Cameras endeavors to feature. Thank you for your comments and interest in FOC.
@@FixOldCameras Ok. Thanks for your response!
When you remove the bottom plate does it let light into the film chamber? (I have the FM, idk if that makes a difference.)
I have the same problem. Can I open it while having a film inside? Thank you!
I would really love to know this also. Thanks in advance and subbed
thank you sooo much it worked with my tokura xD
Good to hear of your success.
Will this work on the Nikon F3? My lever is jammed and the mechical shutter isn't working
Yes, the F3 is considerable different.
No, the technique demonstrated does not apply to the F3
Thanks for the reply!
Does this fix tip can work on a Minolta XG-M?
The wind interlock is set up differently, but bypassing it and winding putting the camera through another wind cycle might work if the shutter has released without trigger the interlock lever. But first check the position of the shutter curtain as shown in this FOC video link.
ruclips.net/video/XwKnW1dMEtA/видео.html
bro how can I put up my shutter in cannon ixus 155
I have done this multiple times but it seems everytime I close it again it jams back up
Check to see if there is a ding or dent in the bottom cover that might be binding the mechanism. Also check the pivots of the levers to see if they are sluggish.
i have a praktica tl 1000, but the shutter release wont work i wind it and when i press on the shutter release nothing happens i really need help on getting it fix but were i live there is no one that could fix cameras.
With a camera that is jammed, the first thing you need to try and determine is if the shutter is jammed or the wind mechanism is stuck. Maybe start by removing the bottom cover and see if you see anything out of place. If it is possible, using a working Pracktica TL 1000 as a guide would be very helpful as you could remove the bottom cover of it and watch how it functions.
Fix Old Cameras i really dont know about this type of camera but ive seen dome videos and ive seen that when you wind it the shutter blades in the back need to move but in this case they dont move they stay on the same place.
How to I fix a stuck shutter release on a MINOLTA XG-1?
The XG-1 has an electronic release. Start by checking that the battery contact and battery lid are very clean. Even the slightest film of corrosion will prevent battery power from flowing and prevent the camera from releasing.
My FG-20 is shooting with only one speed. Do you have any advice?
Has it defaulted to the manual (1/90th) mechanical speed? Also the auto speeds do not engage until the counter dial reaches (1) and must have a good battery to function.
My FG-20 is fully mechanical. Only the lightmeter uses two bateries A76. The speed dial sets all the speeds, but when shooting, it's just one of them that works (I don't know wich is). I tried to open by the bottom, but it's too complex to reach the mechanisms.
The FG-20 speeds are not automatic but they are controlled electronically. (except for the default mechanical speed of 1/90th) If the batteries are weak or there is even the slightest amount of corrosion on the battery cap or contacts the speeds will not time out. Check the battery cap under magnification, sometimes the corrosion is so slight it is almost invisible. If it is not a battery issue, than it is a shutter holding magnet or circuit issue.
Thank you very much for you help. =)
Not that lucky to fix mine camera, but thanks!
