700 for 15-20 minutes ride is too much. Almost 5 times the normal cost. The guide was clearly taking of advantage of you being foreigner. Try to use Uber or Ola (Indian cab hailing service) for traveling. They will charge you reasonable price.

Hi! Thanks for the tips. This was an organised day tour so I was at the mercy of the city guide who was showing me around the city. That particular trip was quite short as only small vehicles can enter that part of Old Delhi. It was difficult negotiating whilst alone and with noone to assist me really. I used Uber one evening which really did seem to be the best way.

I am sorry these tour guide scams are very common in India. That's why I would highly suggest when you visit India for the first time go to a 5 star hotel stay for 2 nights and get a city tour right from them. It's bit expensive but it's all inclusive. Marriott properties are extremely reliable in India so go with them.

Hi! Thank you (SO!!) much for these incredible tips. I would love to go back to visit some off-the-beaten-track places. My first mission in India was very stereotypical I'm afraid - to see the grandiose Taj Mahal!! This informed much of my first travel itinerary, much like many other first time visitors. @@thesam27hosh Hi, thanks for the comment. I didn’t book a random taxi. I was on a city tour and the guide for the day took me to a part of the city that he said was only accessible by tuk tuk or rickshaw. Generally I would expect a guide to advocate for their client but I was wrong. He then bargained for that price for the rickshaw. I had never been there before so would have no idea what price was acceptable. People have mentioned in the comments I was overcharged.

Go as soon as possible to your country. You may (almost certain) have bad experience and this will ruin the name of the country more. Westerners don't understand that Under developed and developing countries are not safe as of western countries. We know our country has issues and it will take time. Every western traveller's come without prior safety measures and hoax mentality of raw experience and will comment how bad is their stay. If you come please make sure of safety and don't try to experience everything like locals. We are habituated with bad and ugly experiences not you.

Hi there, thanks for your comment. I certainly didn't take any chances and tried to keep safety as a priority, especially since I was travelling as a solo female. I had a guide and driver the whole time and stayed in reputable hotels. I will speak of my experience in another video so that other potential travellers may have an idea of what it's like (especially solo female travellers).
