    That last one does give me nightmares; at a family gathering last year my 16yr old nephew showed me an early Tag Heuer that had belonged to a late relative, the thing was that it was steamed up inside!, apparently he had been in the shower room with the crown open!. I told his parents that the watch would be ruined unless remedial action was to take place quickly. I have not since had opportunity to ask about the watch, but after seeing that last rusty one in my imagination that Tag is just getting worse.

    Richard, how bloody long did they leave that watch laying about after getting water in it?
    I once restored an Air King that the owner's sweat had eaten right through the caseback and had started into the works.
    The chap actually had an odour of acetic acid about him. Not unpleasant but quite odd. Doctor friends have told me that it is not terribly uncommon.
    I had to deepen the O-ring groove on the lathe as the salt had pitted that badly too. Saved it though.
    The back went in the bin however..
    One thing that not a lot of people know; Stainless steel is only stainless steel if there is air about. Throw some salty water at it without some air available and all hell breaks loose.

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  4 года назад

      Hi scheusselmensch ..sadly the water ingress occurred right at the start of lockdown and the owner is an elderly lady who consequently was unable to get out and go to the post office to send the watch. Normally the emedial action would have been swifter. It is amazing how quickly the damage is incurred. Looks worse than it is I figure ... I am about to find out in detail! Hope all good with you. Richard

    Enjoyed seeing the watch before and after restoration. I am guessing the cost of restoring the water damaged Rolex was quite high. Replacment parts + many hours of work = $$$$. My coworker dropped his Omega and paid $850,US. Dollars for the repairs

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  4 года назад +1

      The water damaged watch is on the bench now. Looks worse than it is ... the dial maybe 'a gonna' but I am going to try and see if it can be saved. The rest should clean up (maybe need a new date wheel and intermediate wheel). Then its is straight full service with a bit of extra cleaning. Very satisfying to do .... thanks for the feedback Mike. Hi Richard,
    If I get a watch regulated for how long will it keep the new regulation , even if it's not s daily wear?
    Ta in advance.

    • @richardperrettwatchmaker
      @richardperrettwatchmaker  4 года назад

      Hi Jay ... depends on the quality of the regulation components. Vostoks for example are great watchs but suffer sometimes from loose regulation assembly which can throw the timing completely if the watch is shocked. Modern Rolex calibres use a free sprung balance which is very resilience to any shocking of the watch and can stay in for decades. If a watch is stored for a very long time with no use it can suffer from a drop in amplitude ... this will have an effect on the watches timing regardless of the setting of the regulation mechanism. Hope this helps. Richard

    My Russian pieces arrives with plenty of mangunge yeuch and the worst ones are the sweaty hairy types who just loved to bathe in cigarette smoke and I have chucked two watches in the bin as the pungent stink was too much being an ex smoker and really stunk the joint up. Some would say I am probably the ultimate bad thing to happen to watches, a noob with tools is positively dangerous to these poor little things, although I did bring back a locked solid 1960's Sekonda back from the dead but its temperamental. The one I am sad about is the never worn deep gold plated Raketa based Sekonda, runs fast sometimes, runs slow many times and stops for no reason, I put it on one of two Tag Heuer "gold brick" racing bracelets I have, it looks the absolute dogs danglies but working wise, its about as potent as a Boris Johnson promise...
