I just picked up this kit last weekend for Christmas. Glad to see your Open Box review since I can't open mine yet. Thanks! It looks spectacular! There is some really nice details there for a $20 kit. I'm kind of bummed by the Cadillac engine, but it looks really nice. I sure I can hunt down a flat head if I decide to not go with the kit engine. I guess I'll see when I get there. Once again, you've made me feel really good about my kit purchases. Thanks again.
The 49 Merc by AMT will give you the Flathead engine you desire. And it's a great kit in itself, which will accept the Caddy engine from this kit without much issue at all according to those that have made the swap. At $18 it's stuffed to the box lid with plastic, better tires, wheels (in my opinion) than the Revell that you can use too. It would be the perfect parts donor for a stock wagon. www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXYTK1&P=7
Chris, I have been meaning to ask you. You are more knowledgeable about real vehicles than I. How had the automakers come to make so many parts of chrome? Front grille, bumpers, light bezels, trim, manufacturer logos, etc. What is the point of it all? I find the mirror finish under bright lights terribly painful.
Millions of people just love the shiny chrome and how it looks on a big classic car. It was extremely popular. It's a personal taste thing but all the carmakers used it for decades. Even now there are chrome packages for new cars, etc
@@hpiguy , thanks, Chris. Do chrome parts have any practical or utilitarian value for the vehicle? Or is it merely decorative? I have seen something called "black chrome", if I remember correctly.
bit of fish gut lol there 🍣 great review iv come back to the bench for long time and way build my first but torn between this merc wagon,(revell) the 1960 Ranchero ,new (AMT) or the 55 Ford pannal van (revell) 53 Ford pick up from new(AMT) so many beautiful kits now to choose from!
I have heard from others that it is an easier swap. Just use the Merc engine and tranny in place of the Caddy motor. You will likely have to fiddle with the exhausts and other small bits a bit to make it a perfect fit. It's an easy way to practice your skills.
I believe there is a kit of the Merc Woody used in the TV show Mod Squad. Merc Woodies are rare cars. Cool build.

Sharp looking kit. I'm not into those older car kits YET, but I know it will happen eventually. This one is sharp
Yes, it's a classic clean look. Thanks for watching.

i think the Cadi engine is included in the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado
Would you say it's the custom '49 merc with a different body?

On my wishlist, gonna swap the power egg though, for a flathead with Ardun heads....Ardun and Hemis, what can I say good buddy! 😉😍😎😆
I have never changed engine on my kits. How hard would it be to put the felt head from the AMT 49 merc
