Long john silvers is one of the worst places in the US to use as a comparison. It's fast food. It's like comparing a McDonald's burger to a Hamburger from a real sit down restaurant. There are MUCH better places to get fish n chips in America though they still may not be as good.
With Red Lobster was the largest sit down restaurant chain in America, Long John Silvers was the largest fast food chain. Both have almost disappeared in America, although there is a Long John Silver remaining near me some 45 miles away. My local Long John Siver closed several years ago and has been converted into a Tex-Mex fast food restaurant concentrating on tacos and burritos. However during the month before Lint, my local Dairy Queen offers a fish and fries boat with a couple of hush puppies, there are no other sides... If I want seafood locally, I have to eat salmon or tuna at a steak sit down restaurant, or visit McDonalds for a Filet of Fish (pollack) sandwich... However the local diner offers catfish with hush puppies and a side of cole slaw during the dinner and evening hours, but not for lunch...
Point is if you want fish and chips you’re going to places like this… I go to Captain D’s. The versions the London side is showing is their fast food version as well. Why do people have to be so ridiculous.
Fish and chips is a very regional dish here in the U.S. I grew up in a working-class Catholic neighborhood in Pennsylvania, and fish and chips were one of my family's main meals. During lent, the churches would have fish fries every Friday. My dad would also make it for us year round. It was one of the only things that he made.
Growing up, when we went on weekends to the coast or beaches like San Pedro or Malibu/Santa Monica, the best Fish N chips were there. Fresh, big and flavorful. Local burger joints that serve fish n chips just paled in comparison.
Howdy from Texas. As a former Texas chef and chef instructor I have to say that there are indeed places here in the states that might just rival your British Fish and chips. But the restaurant Chain Long John Silver's is really the only national " Fish and chips" option for most Americans. And I wouldn't even consider putting their fish up against a proper British Chippy. Although Long John Silver's fish is battered and fried like a British Fish from a Chippy. The batter that Long John Silver's uses on everything on their menu is quite overpowering flavor wise. So much so that you're pretty much a fool for paying the extra money for their shrimp to be added to your meal because it tastes just like the fish anyway. So you just might as well add another fillet of fish to your order and save a little money. I myself also prefer Cod over Pollock or haddock. And I really enjoy the English style chips as well. Mushy peas, not so much. That particular side is just not something that we Americans are used to. And we'd much rather have a good coleslaw and hush puppies with our F&C. Being from the south myself. Texans tend to prefer fried catfish over battered fish. You should check out the Jolly video on their southern catfish noodeling or their Southern Soul Food experience. They were actually blown away by the fried catfish and said that they preferred it over British Fish and chips.
Minnesota is known for fish fry’s which is cod breaded or not and sometimes walleye served with a number of different side dishes it’s normally very popular during lent, but you can have it anytime really. I love fish.
Here in Louisiana, where po-boy sandwiches are popular, a lot of people eat potato sandwiches. Which is basically fries, typically with roast beef gravy, on french bread. Simple, but good!
I won't comment on them using Long John Silvers, thats d isgusting. But if you think people in certain regions don't eat fish n chip you crazy. It's probably derived from England as it's most popular in New England. Fish and chips is a big thing for some. I'm from Alabama and my mom is from Boston and all they talk about is fish and chips
@@pacmon5285 They didn't practically go out of business lol. There's still almost 600 of them in the U.S. and they've been around for decades. If their food is awful (which it's not), then they'd not have been around as long as they have and still have as many stores as they do. What you are likely referring to is when the business was struggling during COVID, they had to close a lot of their stores, as did many other fast food chains. You are taking your personal experience with your local store which may be bad, and applying that to the entire franchise which is false. Their food is pretty good, but like every fast food franchise, it varies store to store in quality.
Gay relax. Nobody eats long John silvers lol. Dont even know why they used that chain. They must’ve paid. A mom and pop fish shop in US will be a better comparison. And is better than across the pond. 👀😅
Also like to add the majority of Long John Silver's in the United States are closed down and nobody considers that place that have good fish maybe their Hush Puppies that's about it
We have a fish and chips place called the Frying Scotsman here n Beaverton Oregon.. He is from Scotland and does an excellent authentic cod or hadduck or halibut fish and chip.

Long John Silver's or a chain restaurant? You set the USA up to fail. I'm a cook for a living in every independent owned Small Town Diner as well as bars do fish fry Friday. Hands down we have you beat from States like Maryland and then the entire East Coast Seafood Market. Even in my state of Michigan we get some pretty tasty North Atlantic Cod
I pay $8 a pound for fish in my local grocery store. It does tend to fluctuate a little up and down. Although I do shop at a discount grocery store. I usually don’t buy fish from restaurants, but one of our local restaurants has a fish dinner for around $24. Which is why my family prefers to cook fish at home. We usually fry fish at home with fries and green salad or we’ll have potato salad and collard greens with cornbread or hush puppies, but that’s usually a Sunday dinner after church with extended family.
Thinking fish and chips is not a thing in the US is completely false. Tourists only look for a few specific things for the few days they are here (bbq, biscuits and gravy, etc) and ignore everything else. British tourists don't come here looking for fish and chips when you eat it so much at home, you didn't, so haven't a clue about how much awesome seafood the states and other countries have, so much in variety of fish as well as coating and seasoning everywhere. Just look at how much more coastline we in the states have than UK, from coldwater up in the northern states like New England to the warm waters of the gulf down south. Our coasts are smothered in awesome mom and pop places that serve you what was just caught, and trust us, the know how to make fish and chips.
It isn't as popular here compared to there. Fish N Chips there is like burger joints here, is the point. Of course one can find great fish n chips on our coasts but not everyone lives on the coasts. Nor are they as cheap as fast food.
Daz do me a favor while your here next month, go to a fish fry and try it....i know you will be very surprised. They have them at firehall and churches, as well as restuarants on fridays. Nobody in this country considers long john silvers fish and chips....its crap and fries

I love fish and fries here in the U.S…. It’s one of my favorite…not long John silvers, traditional restaurant that serves fish,,, no vinegar…tartar sauce is best
Long John Silver?! What the hell?! I wouldn't go there for water let alone food. I'll agree UK is going to be better. But that's like fighting with one arm tied behind my back. I could go to a dozen places with better fish and chips.
In my humble opinion, Atlantic cod is the best. I steer clear of Alaskan fish or anything from the Pacific. Dirty fish from migration to s/e Asian waters returning only to spawn. ✌🏻
Are they sponsored by Long John Silvers? If you're getting fish chips I would assume you're on the seacoast, which means you'd go to a small mom and pop type restaurant.
?? I mean they tried to find a counter to the UK chain with a US chain. LJS is the closest we have. They also got fish from a local place. Did you pay attention at all to the video?
D and G have you guys tried Long John Silvers before? I dont eat fish but i get their chicken. Both the chicken and fish are beer battered which is soooo good!. I know it's not comparable to traditional fish and chips but that beer batter is amazing lol
We used to have long John silvers here in my area it was Captain D’s rival. We still have Captain D’s and I get it regularly. There batter is more like a wet London batter. It’s definitely not breading per say. My vote is for Captain D’s! I mean they already beat out Long John’s here in my area YEARS AGO!
I live in Seattle and Long John S*** is not a thing anywhere near here where you can get real seafood. Main fish and chips aroud here are cod, halibut, or salmon
I'd put Louisiana and Mississippi catfish up against any type of fried fish in the world. The batter has seasoning in it that makes it much more flavorful than English fried fish. I've had fish and chips in London at a highly-rated place. It was cod, I believe, and was cooked very well. Golden crust, very crispy, hot and fresh. But the batter was pretty bland, honestly. At least compared to what I'm used to. If it just had some seasoning in the batter it would make it so much better.
Fish and chips is huge in the USA. I'm surprised people who lived there for 12 years, but then again New Jersey and Texas aren't really known for it but many other places are and how they are made varies by region. I grew up in New England Cape Cod to be exact. I don't go near chain places only private restaurants and here it's mostly Cod and Maine which I rate 2nd is haddock flounder is probably 3rd in New England other areas like Florida use grouper or red snapper or drum. I have been all over the USA and fish and chips are found everywhere I've been. I'm not going to say what's better because everyone has different taste only that the comment about it not being very popular. Big difference between not as popular per population and not popular in general.
I think they missed a reason fish consumption in general is falling. In some fishing areas the fish have been contaminated with plastics. Since we seldom know exactly where the fish in a restaurant is coming from, consumers are leery of all fish.
I grew up on LJS, always liked the hush puppies but it's like the KFC of fish places. I live near a Captain D's, it tastes less like ultra fast food, more worthy of a decent fish dinner, we also get mozzarella sticks lol that's popular in the US but they are hit or miss depending on the place. They have normal fries which is all I can ask for, I hate shoestring fries unless the meal really calls for it like with a burger or hot dog. I'm warming up to coleslaw, I never used to eat it, but I'd probably always prefer mac n cheese or a macaroni salad. And I think I like Alaskan Pollock more in general for the savory-ness paired with good sauces and sides, Cod tastes fishier from what I remember but wasn't bad, I may need to go out of my way to try it again. The Northeast like Boston does seafood well as you can imagine, and we do have fish more than people might think, especially with Lent not that I care about that, but it's definitely not the most common type of food to get.
UK wins this one hands down. I still remember visiting just a pub* in Paddington and how astonishingly good it was. Ok, I was not super big on the “chips”, what we yanks call fries, but the fish was huge and insanely good. The potatoes are yawn anyway. *As a Yank, I was completely surprised a pub has real, proper food. Bars in the US that look like pubs… lol, no.
How you going to use Long John silver's. There's plenty of real restaurants that make it fresh.... I don't think this is very fair using a fast food place..
The US has so many better things do we have to be better at fish n chips too? Well sorry we are. The batter, the seasoning especially, and yes the chips are better depending on the restaurant of course. Of course if you grew up on the uk version its gonna seem better to you.
Long John silvers is a Crazy baseline it’s awful and not the standard of what most places serve at least not in Oregon (fish and chips are popular here) we also use pacific cod or halibut
What is most funny regarding fast food, is simply they don't hide how unhealthy it is, yet people are pissed they pay pennies on the dollar for shit food and don't expect the shit health. The only exception is Subway that promotes itself as healthy when it definitely isn't, and is one of the worst. If you go order a numbered meal at fast food every day and you get fat, that's on you. If you don't want it, don't buy it is what I say to people.
i put a little bit of vinegar on my fish and chips... but if you gotta soak it in vinegar the fish cant be that good. just like with a steak, if you get a good steak it would be a sin to use steak sauce...if its not so good your covering that thing with steak sauce.
Bro we aren't eating a nasty fish filled with everything nasty. It's a taste for some for sure, but there is no way that's the best fried fish. I live off fish and thats one of the only one I can't eat just due to the taste of dirt water.
@TheRivieraKid no for real, go to the south they have perfected it, I'm not talking about fast food or that one little shop only you and your friends know about that's just so good. I'm talking DEEP SOUTH where they were raised on it..... even the worst fish and chips in the DEEP SOUTH outmatches the best fish and chips in some countries.
@@user-wr9ej6xe4j That's probably true for a lot of people, but I catch fish. I'd take the fkin pepsi challenge with my fried crappie or blue catfish with the most perfectly crisped potato wedges dusted in immaculate seasoning vs. anything EU style fish and chips.

funny how the US fish and chips is the only time we refer to our fries as chips that i know of and ljs not a good representation of a authentic new england F a C
While there used to be a thousand or more Long John Silvers, there are less than a hundred presently spread throughout the nation... Very hard to find today, but a few still exist. I don't miss Long John Silvers so much as I miss Red Lobster's king crab legs...
@@ronclark9724 When McDonalds was using lard for their fries is when everyone said they tasted better. Either way I love Long John Silvers tho. Probably because i get the chicken not the fish lol. That beer batter is f*cking amazing
This is most horrible comparision I have ever seen in my life; it's almost criminal. Fish & Chips in the US especially where I grew up in New England was always made from fresh fish straight in view of the ocean. To use Long John Silvers; a so call seafood fast food restaurant which is going out of business because the food is so aweful. Anything compared to that slop is going to taste better. This is not to take anything away from the chippies in the UK, but it insulting because we have trememdous tasting fish and chips all over the United States: I know because I have been all the US and eaten great fish and chips. These comparisons are so unfair and very very misleading. Anyone who has lived in the US their entire lives has eaten fish and chips knows better. Growing up the fish always has a thick battered crust like they make in the UK. The fries here were also similar to the one served in the UK. The fast food changed all that to save money. I went to Long John Silvers twice and the food was really bad. I grew up on seafood and to this day at the age of 64, I seek out traditional restuarants for seafood; never fast food.I do want to go to the UK for their version which I know will be delicious.
@hanschitzlinger3676 I've had Long John Silvers and that's what you said she's getting you. If you think LJS is good I do have to question your wife's cooking if you say it's good too.
Sorry but Australia does fish and chips better than America and UK combined and then some. Ours is not soggy and we also have chicken salt. I see Brits come to Aus and react to our fish and chips and they always say ours is much better and theirs is soggy crap.
@@pacmon5285 I never said American’s fish and chips are soggy. I said British say theirs is. Australia is known for the best fish and chips in the world. So whatever lol another American with no clue about anywhere but their own Country. Typical. 🙄

The Northeast like Boston does seafood well as you can imagine, and we do have fish more than people might think, especially with Lent not that I care about that, but it's definitely not the most common type of food to get.
I love me some LJS, but it is NOT typical of fried fish. Most of our fish is pan fried with a very light batter.
The best US fish and chips in British cooks who open restaurants in America. I know there is one in Brooklyn.
Did they really use Long John Silvers as a comparison? 🤦🏽♂️
They went there; unbelieveable.
12:03 lol daz
Not exactly a fish n chips war from the US standpoint
Best fish sandwich in the world is at B.O.s fish wagon in Key west
The chips are called American Fries here.
We used to get fish and chips at Captain D's . Unfortunately , the local one has gone out of business .
Gotta have fish and chips with curry sauce.
Curries make me vomit....
That's new age, traditional doesn't have that. It's just like there's places that have roti instead of Yorkshire pudding with the Sunday Roast.
Trust me one thing Americans do is make comfort food good. There are many places in city you can get Fish and Chips
The best fish and chips is what you cook at home and I used batter catfish is best for fish and chips
Captain Ds is better than Long John Silvers.
Maybe if you live in a northern coastal state it’ll be comparable but the average fish n chip shop In Britain will be better.
So many ignorant, egomaniacal Yanks in this commemt section.
LOL, Long John Silver is below McDonald's food quality
Long John silvers is a
Crazy baseline it’s awful and not the standard of what most places serve at least not in Oregon (fish and chips are popular here) we also use pacific cod or halibut
They definitely went to the worse place in the U.S. to get actual fish and chips... they got cheap fish 'portions' and 'fries'!!
i put a little bit of vinegar on my fish and chips... but if you gotta soak it in vinegar the fish cant be that good. just like with a steak, if you get a good steak it would be a sin to use steak sauce...if its not so good your covering that thing with steak sauce.
Best fried fish is catfish. you don't get it at a chain restaurant.
Sorry ..could never shake the taste of dirt that comes with catfish .
Bro we aren't eating a nasty fish filled with everything nasty. It's a taste for some for sure, but there is no way that's the best fried fish. I live off fish and thats one of the only one I can't eat just due to the taste of dirt water.
Lmao absolutely not. The flesh has to be firm not a mushy mess that tastes like mud.
I’ll take Rockfish or Flounder.
I think Gaynor likes the sausage
The real Fish and Chips in the US would slam dunk UK Fish and Chips any day of the week....
Absolute bollocks
@TheRivieraKid no for real, go to the south they have perfected it, I'm not talking about fast food or that one little shop only you and your friends know about that's just so good. I'm talking DEEP SOUTH where they were raised on it..... even the worst fish and chips in the DEEP SOUTH outmatches the best fish and chips in some countries.
Long John silvers is a joke 😂😂you gotta go to a soul food restaurant or something
Come Texas bro, I'll show you the best fish and chips you'll ever have.
Thats what everyone in Texas says about everything because most have never left the state
@@user-wr9ej6xe4j That's probably true for a lot of people, but I catch fish. I'd take the fkin pepsi challenge with my fried crappie or blue catfish with the most perfectly crisped potato wedges dusted in immaculate seasoning vs. anything EU style fish and chips.
@@user-wr9ej6xe4j Also, why would I leave here(not that I haven't), but I live in one of the most diverse cities on the planet, and it doesn't cost me 10x the money for the same things like NYC or LA? Where are you from if you don't mind me asking?
I'm American and UK wins hands down. Not even close. We had an Irish Pub in my town that got close, but they closed during Covid. =(
Have you eaten it at EVERY state in the US?
@chrispavlich9656 yes.
@@bradpirochta9293 I don’t believe you.
Long John silvers fish is just bullshit fish. It’s those patties.
funny how the US fish and chips is the only time we refer to our fries as chips that i know of and ljs not a good representation of a authentic new england F a C
Huh? Long John Silver's? This is dumb, and I clicked off at about the 4 min mark.
Cat fish is the superior fish to use for fish and chips also yuck long jonh silvers why would they use that as a reference
How old is this video. LJS is not the thing anymore.
While there used to be a thousand or more Long John Silvers, there are less than a hundred presently spread throughout the nation... Very hard to find today, but a few still exist. I don't miss Long John Silvers so much as I miss Red Lobster's king crab legs...
Long John Silvers is horrible food.
As I recall they were using lard for their oils...
@@ronclark9724 When McDonalds was using lard for their fries is when everyone said they tasted better. Either way I love Long John Silvers tho. Probably because i get the chicken not the fish lol. That beer batter is f*cking amazing
Please react to Joan Rivers stand up
Mike Chen Texas bbq
I rarely eat fish. Not a fan. So i dip in ranch to make it edible.
My wife’s otw to get us some Long John silvers
Tell her to go to a place with actual good food instead.
I'm sorry to hear that. You have our condolences.
@@hanschitzlinger3676 what did you do to piss her off so bad she's making you eat LJS?
@@beardown3920 you’ve never had my wife’s cooking
@hanschitzlinger3676 I've had Long John Silvers and that's what you said she's getting you. If you think LJS is good I do have to question your wife's cooking if you say it's good too.
Long John silvers is trash and they should’ve known that
Long John silvers is shit
Sorry but Australia does fish and chips better than America and UK combined and then some. Ours is not soggy and we also have chicken salt. I see Brits come to Aus and react to our fish and chips and they always say ours is much better and theirs is soggy crap.
You've clearly never tried real American fish and chips if you think it's soggy here.
K you can have that one
@@pacmon5285 I never said American’s fish and chips are soggy. I said British say theirs is. Australia is known for the best fish and chips in the world. So whatever lol another American with no clue about anywhere but their own Country. Typical. 🙄
Every Country has things they do better than anywhere else. Australia does Fish and Chips and BBQ the best. Those are things we are known for. Dispute it all you like. But it is what we are known for.
@@ozzybloke-craig3690 You’ve obviously never eaten a whole hog pork BBQ sandwich from Eastern NC.
Fish and Chips basically doesn't exist in the US. This is a weird comparison. And Long John Silver's is basically out of business. They don't even have a single location in NY.
You must be living under a rock. Fish and Chips are alive and well in the US. Like anything else, you simply need to know where to go. There are even a lot of Pub's in the US that make amazing Fish and Chips.
Beans on toast, beans on chips, and chips in bread. I don't think my stomach could handle all of that starch.
My blood sugar would skyrocket with all that starch... Why don't the British like cole slaw? The main reason why sea food restaurants have closed in America is the UNHEALTHY oils used in frying the fish and chips... It was and is a FAT trap for those wishing to clog their arteries and have a stroke before they are 60...
New Orleans fried fish and french fries are much better than the UK. GOOGLE NEW ORLEANS FISH FRY
Why the hell would the American go-to long John silver? So so dumb 🤦♂️😂
