My momma passed away at the time of this release and I was jamming to this album to cope. Four years later I'm able to listen to this without tearing up.
This song has always hit me hard because of the themes it conveys it’s almost like an onion you just peel it back to find more themes . In the first few lines we hear he’s cousin talk about how Kendrick thinks no one is praying for him which shows he thinks he’s under appreciated and undervalued this builds a sense of resentment in Kendrick. Then we see The fear of failure, The Fatalistic and Pessimistic attitude he carries when he talks about how he might die, We also see how he copes with this suffering trying to numb the pain. After this we see a type of imposter syndrome where he thinks that he’s success is not really his and questions if god is playing a joke on him or testing he’s ability to endure suffering and is doomed to fall apart. The crushing pressure of responsibility and trauma that makes him look for a coping mechanism (Smoking). The constant self Doubt that makes him doubt he’s success and abilities mixed with he’s low self esteem. The fear of losing hes touch and falling off. The Repression of he’s emotions and feelings throughout childhood to being an adult. Fear that he can’t find the passion anymore. This track is very deep when you take a look at it he also starts to question why he’s in rap in the first place. Is it because he’ loves the rap game for what it is? Or because he’s scared to go back to a time where he was trapped in the hood, where he thought he had no chance and no confidence no way to make it out both mentally and physically but to suffer?. In the end it boils down to a strong dread that he carries thinking he may be cursed with suffering. But with that dread comes hope because at the very end he’s cousin comes in to remind him that through that suffering there will be a positive outcome because when you think your life has been all suffering yet you still endure deep down you know that through that enduring through that suffering will sooner or later give you the opportunity to have success in life.

Setiously this album might have stopped me from committing suicide, the message is too powerful, i feel it in my soul. Edit: i posted this 5 months ago since then ive dealt with the death of my girlfriend, went to rehab and now drug free, god is good, keep going harder everyday and love the life you live and yourself.
My mom passed two days ago, and this song has deepened way further than I ever imagined it ever would. I'm only 31 so I guess I lost her early. She stressed to me that the only thing she wanted for me was to live a life of fullness, being genuine to myself and without fear. The way I can honor her memory is to do that very thing. I fight the fear of not being myself every day, but I'll fight for me and you mom. See you in my dreams.

First time I heard this track it broke me. A widowed, single mother raising a son. This song taught me…what’s discipline to me is fear to my son! I changed my whole approach after hearing this work of art. He saved my relationship with my son, and I thank him because my son adores me. I think the fundamental reason why I love Kendrick is due to his fearless ability at revealing his deepest insecurities and vulnerabilities to the world: it’s the thing that makes him so identifiable on a human level. And despite doing this many times throughout his discography, this may be his crowning achievement at a level of openness that a majority of artists are not brave enough to reveal.

Hamish Barrett I think it’s matches up with his other albums. The thing is, it’s a completely different style. This album is an in depth look at himself. Really taking it personal. Hard to find something like this nowadays or even in general. Every single song has some sort of connection to himself and his life and experiences. If you don’t see depth and narrative in this album, then give it another few listens. There is contrast, discussions of right and wrong, struggles-both internal and external-, and emotion. Love and Loyalty, I agree we’re probably the weakest tracks he’s made, but they were songs for his SO, not for everyone else. I feel like more than anything, this album was for Kendrick, that’s why he says that this is his favorite album. You can have your opinions, but I think that this is still an incredible album.

This song has always hit me hard because of the themes it conveys it’s almost like an onion you just peel it back to find more themes . In the first few lines we hear he’s cousin talk about how Kendrick thinks no one is praying for him which shows he thinks he’s under appreciated and undervalued this builds a sense of resentment in Kendrick. Then we see The fear of failure, The Fatalistic and Pessimistic attitude he carries when he talks about how he might die, We also see how he copes with this suffering trying to numb the pain. After this we see a type of imposter syndrome where he thinks that he’s success is not really his and questions if god is playing a joke on him or testing he’s ability to endure suffering and is doomed to fall apart. The crushing pressure of responsibility and trauma that makes him look for a coping mechanism (Smoking). The constant self Doubt that makes him doubt he’s success and abilities mixed with he’s low self esteem. The fear of losing hes touch and falling off. The Repression of he’s emotions and feelings throughout childhood to being an adult. Fear that he can’t find the passion anymore. This track is very deep when you take a look at it he also starts to question why he’s in rap in the first place. Is it because he’ loves the rap game for what it is? Or because he’s scared to go back to a time where he was trapped in the hood, where he thought he had no chance and no confidence no way to make it out both mentally and physically but to suffer?. In the end it boils down to a strong dread that he carries thinking he may be cursed with suffering. But with that dread comes hope because at the very end he’s cousin comes in to remind him that through that suffering there will be a positive outcome because when you think your life has been all suffering yet you still endure deep down you know that through that enduring through that suffering will sooner or later give you the opportunity to have success in life.

My mom passed two days ago, and this song has deepened way further than I ever imagined it ever would. I'm only 31 so I guess I lost her early. She stressed to me that the only thing she wanted for me was to live a life of fullness, being genuine to myself and without fear. The way I can honor her memory is to do that very thing. I think the fundamental reason why I love Kendrick is due to his fearless ability at revealing his deepest insecurities and vulnerabilities to the world: it’s the thing that makes him so identifiable on a human level. I think it’s matches up with his other albums. The thing is, it’s a completely different style. This album is an in depth look at himself. Really taking it personal. Hard to find something like this nowadays or even in general. Every single song has some sort of connection to himself and his life and experiences. If you don’t see depth and narrative in this album, then give it another few listens. There is contrast, discussions of right and wrong, struggles-both internal and external-, and emotion. Love and Loyalty, I agree we’re probably the weakest tracks he’s made, but they were songs for his SO, not for everyone else. I feel like more than anything, this album was for Kendrick, that’s why he says that this is his favorite album. You can have your opinions, but I think that this is still an incredible album.

I always find myself going back to this song whenever i feel down or troubled with life. This track is personal to me and probably one of my favorites. And the fact he sheds light on god and the children of Israel is a nice touch and gives a deeper meaning on life and the fears of the unknown

In my opinion, best song on the album. Lyrics are really penetrating and personal, the backing track is heavenly and the closer on the track sounds like a new song in and of itself. Just an amazing song all around.
