  • Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) are a solution to the problems tackled by platform engineering. But why are platforms the answer? What problems are we actually tackling?
Platform engineers are quick to throw a platform at any problem. After all, if you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail, right? What we often miss is the fundamental problem we are addressing. This talk explores what that fundamental problem is and why building platforms is the answer.

3:19 commodities - I like this line of thinking. In software systems we (hopefully) have layers and layers of virtual commodities. I would go so far as to say that a GitOps Engine is now a commodity, given that there are two healthy competing implementations, and in the worst case both are open source. One task of the platform engineer is to identify the commodities.
