I've got the old KTM525 and I just love it. I've put a big tank on it and did 2000kms in 6 days. It was economical and with lower gearing I do enduro. 500cc is a great size. In reality if not getting as thrashed as a smaller motor. They need a 7 speed gearbox, it would save changing the sprocket/s for adventure vs enduro. Tempted to get what you have. Great video btw.
Good work John, I have an old DR650 that i do that sort of stuff on.. bloodey great fun!! The 500 is definatly the light Adventure bike king straight out of the box, and im sure if you wanted to spend a couple of dollars to set up it would eat those 330km days.. First ride from the shop they fitted the 13 - 50 gearing, and it was revving way too hard at 100km/hr for me, its much better with the 14 - 50. But yeah, 1 x HWY gear would solve that, but then i guess the weight etc.. You wont be disappointed if you do upgrade
What’s truly impressive about the 500 is in tight stuff you can really throw it around, it responds well in a corner. 300 for hard enduro, 500 for everything else.
Love it up there! We hit that track where you dropped the bike the day after 40mms of rain and it was nearly impossible! Took us an hour to make it up the 200m! Amazing how nimble and rideable the modern big banger KTM 4 strokes are compared to say a WR450 that still feels like it weighs 125kgs… Enjoy your vids, keep it up!
I can imagine after some rain that being super hectic!! The real wild section just comes out of no where too!! I was blown away with how narrow and 350 like those big bangers are!! Absolute please to ride 👌 cheers
DJW, Thats exactly what i thought when i picked mine up.. I removed the the outer plastic tail fin and plastic indicators, then fabricated a pice of 3mm aluminium the same size as the number plate, with a 20mm folded lip at the top. Then mounted some small flush mount indicators on the 20mm return lip. Might do a little bike run over video in the coming weeks, stay tuned and you will get a good look at it. 👍✊
@@SeasonalTherapy awesome would be cool to see what mods you guys do to your bikes. It’s my first dirt bike so still learning after years of road and adventure bikes.
Hey Adam, we run the Metzler MC360 hard tyres on our bikes.. only because we do 90% dirt and the 500s are fairly angry on tyres 👍 otherwise u really just need a tail tidy, bash plate and map switch and your good to go 🤙🤙
Thoughts on comparisons with the Husky FE 501S pls. I have a 2019 701 Enduro but want something smaller , less tiring. Not necessarily a Husky diehard just interested in differences before I buy.
Hey Goatie, the Husky 501 is basically the same machine.. cant go wrong. I guess it more depends what sort of riding you are doing.. the 701 could be loaded up like a packhorse for moto camping trips, and the 501 would be more suited to light Adventure riding, staying at accomodation. What sort of Adventures do you get up too?
@@SeasonalTherapy Thanks. Not into riding 3hrs on black before hitting the dirt for 2. I wanted something to replace my TT600 , big bore kit geared down, that I sold too soon for too little but hey kids come first. That straight off the throttle grunt of the 600 is what I wanted. The whole 'adventure bike' thing is pretty broad. Might have to go back to the drawing board. A 700 Tenere or Africa Twin and a 200-300 two stroke would be a good combination.
@@goatie977 yeah perfect world, Tenere or 890 Adventure r for big trips, 500 for all enduro rides, and a 300 2 banga for the hard enduro 👌 🏦 I’m lucky where I live, it’s like 15mins of black, then all high country 🤙🤙
The engine won't lug at low speed, and flames out continuously on technical trails... and that's at 13/52 gearing. KTM has to fix this!...or do we? Somehow.
Mmmm.. all 4 strokes struggle with flame out at low revs on hard tight terrain, but have never had any problems on the 500. Maybe for a start slightly increase your idle to give the engine every chance. Also make sure there’s not too much free play in the clutch, so it’s definitely disengaging when u pull in. See if that helps 👌
I have a 2018 husky 701 enduro, and wanted something more for offroad so i bought a 2022 ktm 500 and i love the bike but have since been riding harder and harder stuff and all the guys i ride with are on 300 two strokes and have been telling me im on the wrong bike for hard enduro so now i have a ktm 300 tpi on order. How do you think the 500 compares to your hard enduro bike?
Hey Tyler, the boys are right!! nothing really compares to the light front end and exceptional clutch control you get from the 2 stroke 200-300 range bikes.. they are just built for billy goat stuff. The 500 is the ultimate lite weight Adventure bike.. has the ability to get through some hectic singles, but then also comfy to cruise at 100kmh along fire or bitumen roads. I say set the 500 up for longer trips, sell the 701 and use the 300 for the HE days 👌
Great video. 🤟 I have a KTM 520 EXC 2002 model with the RDS motor. It’s banging like a champ. People always make offers for the bike as mechanical it is A1. Would never sell it. The FMF. pipe not sure it’s totally legal but damn it sounds good. True wheelie machine. My precious. ✌️
Great bike no doubt but the suspension let’s it down terribly. It’s not a race ready bike.. be prepared to spend big dollars to make it semi reasonable in the suspension but no way near a modem Yamaha
Have u got a 2022? As they made some massive Suspention changes for this year and it actually handles really well.. we will probably run them around for a few months and then give them to our bloke @choice Suspention to give them a go over 👌
@@SeasonalTherapy yes I’ve had choice suspension work done on my 2020 250tpi bike. And I’ve ridden 21 model bikes with cone valves and some fancy Italian inserts.. they are better.. but still really poor compared to KYB. WP are good for trail riders and slower technical riding. Even still you’ll need to throw big dollars into WP suspension for it to work at a semi acceptable manner
Hey guys....love the video.....Thanks for posting! I'm going to be getting back into riding after a 10 plus year layoff. I'm considering the KTM 500 that you are riding here or Yamaha wr 450. My last bike was a KTM 400 exc. The Yamaha is intriguing to me because it seems high tech with the reverse motor and good suspension. Have you had any time on the Yamaha? If so, how do they compare? Thanks........Check this out. This is my uncle Leroy Burton. He is a former AA enduro racer. He used to take me to national enduros where guys like Dick Burleson and other greats were competing. Leroy could keep up with those guys. I learned much from him. In this video he is setting national records at the age of 77. He competed until he was 83. He is 86 now and doing well in Erie, PA USA. ruclips.net/video/sk62CQWvPlE/видео.html Old enduro riders just keep getting stronger! Steve from Ohio USA.

Good news John 🤙
Those tracks around Eildon look like lots of fun. Good review fellas👍
I should have never watched this. There is nothing affordable that compares to these monsters. Amazing.

Cool Vid, looks like you dudes had a blast.
Do the bikes have the stock silencer with the small outlet or are they open more like the xcfw
Hey Doug, they are open like the xcf 👍 not overly loud, or barky just nice 😊
Be interested on what you did in the tail to tidy it up. Just picked up my 500 and it’s so ugly and will break the first time I drop it

Good conditions for the big girls, not so good with a bit of rain though. I enjoyed your video though guys, nice job!
UTPP, don’t worry we will be back in winter 🥶 and u will get to see us struggling up those snotty climbs 👌haha
Spend some time on a 1290 Super Adventure R and the EXC500F literally feels like a bicycle.
Haha.. I bet it does! Although those bigger bikes are designed well with the weight down low, u can’t compare to the BMX Exc 500 🙈😂😂

I had 14/48 which was alright local, 14/45 is good for longer road trips and alright in bush but not tight single trail
