Which symphony is this? I only know the Resurrection (No 2) but this is very different. Such a great composer!

@@MH-iv7tk His 8th - known as 'The Symphony Of A Thousand".
1. Agreed.
2. Mahler's 2nd & 8th Symphonies are his two big choral symphonies, although the 3rd has a brief movement for boy's chorus. In the 2nd, the chorus appears only in the last half of the Finale, whereas in the 8th, the chorus is through composed in its entirety.
3. In the 2nd, Mahler was professing a general belief in the resurrection of the dead, whereas the 8th is a tribute to the aspect of femininity in the divine and in humanity. The 8th's first movement is a setting of the Latin hymn Veni Creator Spiritus and the second movement is a setting of Goethe's Faust. Mahler dedicated the 8th to his wife Alma, the great love of his life.
Took the audience long enough to realise that was the end!
Because this finale is so impressive, the audience didn't want to 'break the atmosphere' too soon. Goose bumps, when singing this. And even now. Amazing experience.
You should wait until the conductor drops his arms. Unfortunately, not all listeners elsewhere are aware of this.
