Guess what... I forgot to discuss the little part in the end when, before going to G to A section, it switches to Bm7 and F#m7 instead of Bm and F#m, making this part more gentle and sweet. You see, even after sitting on the song for so long, I still can find things to discuss. And I'm not even discussing solos in my videos and anything else. I've got enough to work with haha!
I mean litterally EVERY SINGLE video of yours is just nothing short of amazing. I think you'll agree when I say your singing isn't the best one out there but it is certainly not bad at all. The guitar parts are just flawless, thats for sure. Keep it up !! To me you are the best in the youtube game 👌
Yup, my singing is something I get commented on a lot (in a bad way), but you got it absolutely right, my main focus is playing guitar. And the song is not only about singing, so I give it a shot. Singing is not only good for the song but also good for teaching, shows where to play what. Thank you!
100% agree, and I think its awesome Pavel puts himself out there complete with singing - I find it inspiring. I like listening to it and it tells me instantly what the song will be like to play myself - with my own not-so-perfect-singing 😅 so thanks for sharing in full and putting up with bad comments in the interest of education!
Haha! Especially his early live singing was yes, very Bob Dylan inspired. But now Mark has a wonderful singing voice, Restless Farewell is a masterpiece.
you sing fine my friend! dont stop doing it cause it gives the song you personal colour. Just try to make the voice from the lung, not falsetto from the throat and you will get it! (pre warming always) @@PavelFomenkov
I remember very well when I got my hands on the first Dire Straits LP, I was tasting song for song, (at that time I knew so well: Down To The Waterline, SOS and Wild West End, the first and second due to the MFN compilation from 1988 and WWE through vhs Dire Straits The Videos), I was impressed with everything here, until Lions arrived, I was very intrigued by this song, it was strange and at the same time very seductive, unlike anything else, it was the song that more bewitched me, I would say. This was more than 20 years ago and I still feel the same spell when I meet her, she is in the right place, closes the album with a golden key, enhances the melancholic atmosphere of the album and links to the woman present on the album cover , my mind created this connection at the time and scored. I know it was written Basing Street Studios, London, February 1978 so it was the last song written for this album because they basically had all the songs ready, there's also information that the melody was suggested by David Knopfler. I've been waiting a lot for this video, and again you were amazing, this x-ray of this song just makes it even more special for me, there are many levels to analyze in this song, but for now I want to close by thanking you for one more opportunity to learn more about the structure of these songs, you have a lot of sensitivity to capture much of the spirit of these work of art that the master has done since the beginning of his career. A fraternal hug!!!
Hi Pavel I've been watching your channel for some time and I've come to the conclusion that if I need to learn any Dire Straights or Mark Knopfler song your channel is the first channel I go to your level of detail is amazing consise and... just sounds right... thank you for all your hard work.. regards johnnieboi
oh my god i cannot describe the feeling i just got upon seeing this in my notifs aaaaaaaaaaaaa it's my favorite Dire Straits song 🥺 thank you so so so much Pavel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dude, if i ever live to see youtube disappear, or end of the world, your videos will be thing that i regret most i did not download to have them offline... Hope you are good and safe, and keep them coming!
Singing well is extremely difficult to do well. Unless you're born with perfectly tuned vocal chords and a reasonable range in pitch, you have to work very hard just to sound acceptable. Some people can sound great no matter what they sing, like Lennon or McCartney from the Beatles, the majority of us aren't as lucky. Good on you Pavel for giving it a go. Your not half bad, and it takes a lot of guts to sing publicly. Guitar work, fantastic, Knopfler will be proud of you. I'm amazed how or why he hasn't heard you, reached out and credited you for doing such a fine job.
Thank you so much! You're 100% right about voice. With a great voice, you don't even need a guitar sometimes, it's like clothing on people cursed with a fine body. Throw any piece of cloth and you'll look like Brad Pitt! And Mark doesn't need to reach out because he would gain nothing from it. He's a quiet and private guy who's not famous for reaching out to everyone like Brian May and other musicians, so I'm definitely not waiting for feedback. And it's even better when people are diametrically apart, live literally in different worlds, and yet still get a soul connection when it comes to songs. I love that.
Pavel: "I don't know a lot of music theory." Also Pavel: "I think this is called a tritone substitution." Reminds me of Mark saying that after all these years, he knows maybe like 5% of the guitar.
As usual, an incredible performance. I'm sure MK created this song, among others, with an acoustic guitar. That point make your approaching to the song even more accurate. Thanks Pavel, what a musician you are!
I think acoustic guitar is just more suited for songwriting, every songwriter I know usually writes on acoustic anyway. It's more natural, and besides, it gives an opportunity of performing the song alone. And Mark's solo performances are fabulous, I wish he played alone more, and sorta trying to do it so he doesn't need to. Haha! Thank you.

Great analysis Pavel, I've been scratching my head over how MK achieved this forever..... Thanks man!
