Love that you guys are paying such close attention to Myne's development. As much as the "I crash in and change everything to modern values" fantasy of isekai is fun, in reality it would rarely be that easy. I like that this show is taking a more realistic approach in that Myne does have SOME power to change things, but there are also lots of things that she has to adjust to instead, and wielding authority over someone else's life (which would be rather unthinkable nowadays for most people) is not an easy step to take, but she did it well~
Bringing thousands of years of human cuisine to the past/a fantasy world with a historical setting is honestly one of my favourite tropes and I will never grow tired of it ❤
Indeed. I recently read an Isekai novel where they were shocked at the amount of salt used when hamburgers were made. Those overuse of spices, or cost of sugar from Ascendancy here, add a nice touch on why those foods aren't around. Will not grow tired of that trope.
@@Jackex Also Isekai shoukudou fantasy people being absolutely mind-blown by the abundance of ingredients and materials that to them are crazy expensive or outright unobtainable
@@Jackex Spoiler regarding the sugar in this series . . . (Major spoilers) . . . . . . . . (Seriously major spoilers, you've been warned) . . . . . . . . . . . Sugar is actually not native to Yurgenschmidt (this is the name of the country of which Ehrenfest resides within). Ehrenfest has only recently been able to trade for it, though it has already spread quiet far throughout the Sovereignty and Greater Duchies. It's use in deserts leaves much to be desired as they simply dump it on the food. The fact that Myne has actual recipes that incorporate it as opposed to how it's currently applied is what has most people astonished; and once again, she completely undervalues her knowledge of things she took for granted in our world. The main two take away from this though, is that sugar doesn't natively grow in this world and the fact that Myne knows things no one else does. It's just like the shampoo all over again.
@@Jackexthat is weird since most medieval recipes use lots and lots of salt and pepper Basically, if you are a poor peasant you'd only use whats necessary to preserve food and eat orherwise bland. 7:58 From what i remember Anime doesn't clarify it, but the reason Orphanage Director room isn't in use is because there was a big scandal with the previous Director, so no one else wanted to take the job. And later on, there was also the issue with the war which caused the number of Blue Priest working in the Temple to fall low.
From my understanding, the implication is that Main will sell Benno her recipes and allow his cooks to train in her kitchen, who is fit for a noble, if they provide food for the orphans. He still needs his own restaurant if he wants to turn a profit, as from the perspective of the Church that food is just charity. Some priests in blue might boil at the though Main is being more charitable than them when she's a commoner, though.
Some facts that will never appear in the anime: The two cooks are called Hugo and Ella. Hugo is an ambitious cook who strives to be equal to Leise who worked in a noble's kitchen and then was headhunted by the Guildmaster. Ella is the niece of the owner of an eatery. She desperately wants to find a good job where she doesn't has to work as a waitress (waitresses also sell their bodies in the lower city, Ella's mother is forced to do the same thing after her husband died). Both were amazed by the culinary evolution in Myne's kitchen but also very put-off by the extremely strict hygiene-standart.
Seeing this episode with all the context that you get from the end of this part in the light novel is always a bit heart-wrenching. They did a good job with little details on character’s faces that’s not really noticeable without the extra context ^^’
If you loved Ascendancy of a Bookworm and want something to fill the void. You might like Isekai Academy: The Boarding School Between Dimensions, our protagonist Lyeh was directly inspired by Myne.
Comparing this episode (and relevant parts of the last one) to the books, makes it really obvious how tuned down and constricted (or simplified) the anime really is. I mean in the books Gil got food - just not more then other master-less orphans. Myne was gone from the temple for two days after falling sick after all (needing to buy the clothes too). Then Gil got hit by Lutz's fist right in the face for pulling Myne down. And also at least 5 days passed between Myne getting the room and the Delia incident. There are many small details but the add up. For example Myne would never have knelt in front of Delia to comfort her (Fran would have warned her off) and If you compare the scene were Myne oversees the chefs cooking to the books - in the books a simple compliment of Myne caused the cooks to nearly get an heard attack from fear. Over all the anime is fine but starting this season it's more light hearted nature begins to harm the world building in my opinion, by taking away much of the underlying harshness.
I think it's a marketing decision for the most part (let's not forget about Junior Bunko edition of the LN being a thing), but I think the overall tone will get darker in the announced Part 3 adaptation (Hasse incident is a major plot point, after all)
@@Raitooru I quite agree with you there. And I can understand it, too. While the books are certainly better then the anime, the anime (sans maybe S2E6 were they totally missed the point) was not bad if somewhat low budget. As much as I wished bookworm could have gotten the apothecary diaries treatment it is clear that TO Books simply did not have the budget for this. This might have changed by now as bookworm is a big name - so as you said let's hope for part 3 🙂
It’s very much my headcanon that Ferdinand very well knew that the orphanage director’s office was perfectly suitable but had his retainer suggest it for deniability.
The orphanage history and situation is much more complicated in the LN, and the reason behind director's office being abandoned is rather dark and disturbing, but it was ommited from the anime adaptation to sustain it's generally lighter tone
Ferdinand never would have let Fran or Myne near that office if he knew exactly how unsuitable it was. At the very least he would have burned and replaced all the furniture.
LIGHT NOVEL SPOILERS: . . . . . . . . . Arno, the guy who suggested it, loves making Fran suffer. He knows Fran was abused in that same office by a Blue Shrine Maiden and knows that by suggesting it to Myne, indirectly he is forcing Fran to spend time with a woman inside the very same room he was abused in.
It's a nice change of pace to get Italian food in an isekai for once. "Guy from another world shows barbarians how glorious Japanese food is" trope is fun and all, but overdone also.
I hope you read the manga and LN someday. This story is so sweet but so sad. Their world is crazy. The context makes it better (or worse because it hurts). Great reaction.
have to say, you idea of the other gray rops going out of line is neat, and whatever that happens or not i wont say. But keep in mind the gay rops a literally are nothing in the nobles eyes. they commoners and could be killed just for telling a bad joke. "better rights? funny, but how about you never ask that again, otherwise you may ask the gods as im sending you to meet them"

Did you notice that the head priest's hair is suddenly shiny?
Always watch people's hair, the minute it turns shiny, they have fallen into the Myne sphere of influence.

Gil has harsh living conditions, but I think Delia situation is worse. In her case, even the concept of reality and how to live is awful.
Yeah Delia had it pretty bad

Considering the hidden/behind the scenes/barely mentioned gray priest coworker envy, I doubt it. Arno definitely suggested it for a reason.
