    i am growing 4 butternut pumpkin plants for the first time using seeds from shop bought pumpkins- 2 in large pots and 2 in a raised bed with other stuff like tomatoes. The pumpkins grow so quick and are heaps of fun to train and pollinate by hand. Very rewarding. I cant wait to harvest my first one soon!

    Living in Mexico, we had no idea this yummy squash existed, the only and most commonly sold summer squash is 'la calabacita verde' which looks like a tender zucchini, so we bought a couple of butternut squash and the way we prepared them was making them into a veggie cream soup, SO GOOD, usually we toast the seeds and eat them BUT not this time saved the seeds for planting this year's season, hoping they do well here, the summer season is the rainy season, from mid-May to September, had no idea how to care for them, but thanks to you dear lady, I now know a bit of how to grow and care for them. Greetings from Mexico to your family and you! :)

    I peel and cut it into cubes, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle generously with a mixture of equal parts cumin, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika and chipotle chili powder. Roast until tender then serve on chopped, massaged kale with goat cheese, toasted pepita's and an apricot vinaigrette. So yummy. My first butternut plant is still tiny with no female flowers yet. We've been fighting the dreaded vine borer. 😤 Got 2 months until first frost, so fingers crossed!

    Last year I roasted my first butternut and a sweet caramel like substance oozed out from it during the roasting process, this, combined with it's deep dark orange and luscious flesh, made me decide to save the seeds and grow my own, which is why I am watching this vid, for tips on growing! I love my sugar pumpkins and pumpkins in general but the butternut is next level in the food realm. I currently have two on the vine.

    My favourite recipe is half a butternut squash, diced, a large tin of kidney beans, small tin of sweetcorn, a cup or so of water and _a couple of squares of dark chocolate._ Bring to the boil and then simmer for about 20 minutes, delicious. I believe it's based on an old Aztec recipe. Great in winter.

      I prefer mine fairly thin/ runny rather than thick but it's personal preference. Easier to add more stock to thin it at liguidise stage than to thicken it up. When cooking I normally find add stock until squash just covered is normally enough. Hope this helps. Play about with it to suit your taste. 👍

    • @asliceofheavenhomestead3559
      @asliceofheavenhomestead3559  2 года назад +1

      I think it is all about the water and nutrients. I have noticed that as the vine grows longer, the plant has to dedicate more of the nutrients into up keep on the vine and it makes the fruit grow smaller. I have had seasons where I made sure to feed and water them regularly and the fruit stayed fairly big all the way until the fall weather killed of the vines.

      Thank you for that encouragement 😊. I would just use a balanced fertilizer like a 10-10-10. I also have great results with miracle grow. It is a fairly balanced blend. If you are growing your squash in pots, you will have to fertilize them more often than if they are in the ground. If you are in a really rainy area, I would suggest once every couple weeks if they are in the ground, throughout the growing season. If you are in a dryer area, then see how they do with once a month.

    How do you avoid ladybuglike bugs, they appear to be yellow ones. Also trine leaves have light white color a bit on it.
    How do you keep them healthy.

    • @asliceofheavenhomestead3559
      @asliceofheavenhomestead3559  3 года назад

      For bugs with an outer shell, you can sprinkle some diatomaceous earth on the leaves. From the sound of it, you may have some powdery mildew forming on the leaves. I have a video about controlling powdery mildew with baking soda and /or peroxide. You can also spray your leaves with neem oil. That is a fungicide, but it also might help control those bugs.

      I watered them twice a day. Because mine were in grow pots, the soil dried out very fast. If they are planted in the ground then you won't need to water them as often as I did. I would put down mulch to trap the moisture in the soil. Good luck with your garden 😁!

    • @asliceofheavenhomestead3559

      That is perfectly fine. It will help to stop the spread of the powdery mildew and the plant will continue to grow new healthy leaves. As the season progresses, it gets harder to combat the diseases and pests, especially if you live in a humid area. Well done, and happy growing 😉!

    To get the most fruit out of butternut squash, it’s best to grow them on the ground, and let each leaf node touch the soil so they can send down roots at every leaf node, this allows the plant to secure itself against wind and storms, as well as bring in more nutrients and water.

    • @asliceofheavenhomestead3559

      I agree, but while growing these, I didn't have land to grow them in. I was very restricted in the apartment that we rented, and so I had to grow them in a pot. It is a good alternative for people who have to grow vertically 😏.

      I have started butternut squash both ways, direct sow and indoors. The soil temperature does need to be warm for them to germinate, so if you are in a region that is just now feeling like spring, I would start the seeds indoors. Once they germinate, you can move them outside. Good luck with those seeds. I tried starting a pepper plant this year from a store bought pepper and nothing happened. Hopefully it is not a dud😏.

    • @asliceofheavenhomestead3559

      When a squash is not pollinated, it won't grow and the end where the flower was will feel kind of squishy /spongy soft. If it was pollinated it would immediately start to grow bigger and the squash would be firm on that end where the flower was.

      I had 2 plants in each of my 12 inch planters. The spacing requirements on the back of the seed packet are based on if your plants are going to be taking up ground space, I think it was like 4 feet apart, but if you trellis them like I did, I would say that you could plant them 8 inches apart.
