    I was going to use this in a raised bed but notice that sap turns into neurotoxins after about 5 years. This means that my raised bed would become dangerous to plants!
    I think I will keep this just for pot plants that are replaced annually.
    Once again, great info!
    Thanks, Dr.
    Regards, Bob (U.K.).

    They’re also called “water crystals”. I soak them first and then mix them in with my potting soil mixture. Or you can buy bagged potting soil that have “wetting agents”.

    I have the citrus plant also and the branches are a bit loopy/curling down. It's like they have no strength. I had it transplanted to a new pot so I'm thinking it's lacking micro-nutrients. If you have any suggestions that would be great.
    Keep up the great work with these awesome gardening contents.

      It seems like the plant is in transplant shock after repotting. Keep in shady area for a week. Water once with Epsom salt solution like 1 tsp in 1 liter.

    Hi, Dr
    Saab. You state in one of your replies down the page that saps became neurotoxins after about 5 years
    and then they are a danger to your plants. If I put saps in a pot of growing tomatoes, how do I then
    get rid of that soil? If I mix it with compost and nutrients to re-use, will the neurotoxins still appear after 5 years?
    If so, how do I dispose of soil that has once had saps used in it?
    I think I need to find an alternative.
    Regards,
    Bob (U.K.)

      These gels are polyacrylamide based. They change form over about 5 years before turning into acrylamide, a neurotoxin that shouldn’t be anywhere near your garden plants. The change occurs faster if you are fertilizing regular,y.

    • @ameliarose727
      @ameliarose727 6 лет назад

      Your best solution would be to use collect and use rain water for your potted plants. Distilled water is another option but it can be expensive. Some gardeners use tap water but once a week or so, they flush the plants with distilled water to get rid of the salt buildup. Terracotta pots can help as they wick out salts. Then you can scrub off the salt on the pot and flush with distilled water once a while. Flushing involves a good deep watering so the salts are washed away. You can also buy water desalination units but they are costly.

    One concern is do they allow oxygen to the root zone?
    Also, you can use fertilizer water and charge those crystals.
    You can also start seeds in those crystals.
    FYI: those crystals have been around for decades. They were commonly sold under the brand name Soil Moist.

      Thank you for your valuable suggestion immediately. A small doubt before going on vacation, water the plant fully (pot say 5" inch) & on top of the soil, can I put 2 to 3 absorbed water balls
      Or
      With out watering the plant & only put the absorbed water balls on the top of the soil.
      Which method I should follow for about 10 to 15 days vacation.
      Before dipping the balls in water, can wash these balls with hydrogen peroxide & then dip it in water so that it doesn't harm the plant
      Another thing, water balls can be dipped to plain water or water mixed with fungside or Epsom salt or any other fertilizer like NPk,DAP etc.,?

    I am not sure about the biodegradability of this product. The papers you have mentioned do not have convincing information on that particular subject. A casual Google search reveals it is not as biodegradable as we would like it to be.

    • @GardenTips
      @GardenTips  6 лет назад +1

      The SAP for horticultural use is labelled biodegradable and hence used. The one used in diapers is not biodegradable. Now green diapers are also available with biodegradable and thus easily disposable.

    • @TheBoomsonic
      @TheBoomsonic 6 лет назад +1

      GARDEN TIPS thanks for the info. In that case it should degrade in the soil in a relatively short time like 2-3 months. If it does not decompose in the soil in a couple of months, I guess the label is misleading. How often do you need to add more SAP after you put in initially?
