In this video, we'll be telling the fascinating story of how a humble billboard company based out of Savannah, Georgia grew into one of the biggest television and media conglomerates that the world has ever seen. Granted, there were a few crucial steps in between those two historical bookends that need to be discussed, but we'll make sure to cover the majority of them. That being said, this video is in no way attempting to give a comprehensive overview of the Turner media empire.
Turner Broadcasting System, founded by the eccentric American entrepreneur, TV producer, media proprietor, and philanthropist Ted Turner, just recently merged with Warner Brothers Discovery incorporated. Despite these recent developments, the media empire that Turner was instrumental in creating is still alive and well, albeit under new management.
Turner might be best known for being the brains behind CNN, the world's first 24-hour cable news network, but he also founded WTBS, a station that pioneered the superstition concept on basic cable TV. The cable incarnation of WTBS eventually dropped the "W" and is now simply known as TBS, while the local Atlanta channel that shared those call letters is now known as Peachtree TV. But although the name's changed, TBS still stands as a reminder of all the ways that Ted Turner has effectively changed the world of television. @scottburton9701 - they also used to run Good Times and Sanford & Son as well as cartoons such as The Flintstones & Looney Tunes and I also remember them running Three Stooge shorts during the overnight hours. Up til a few years ago, they also had the syndication rights to Married With Children.

I had TBS and WOR from New York. WOR gave me my real first glimpse at hockey showing Rangers and Islanders games. This was over 30 years ago and I'm still a Rangers fan based in Ohio thanks to WOR. They had the Mets too but I was already an Indians (now Guardians) fan. Eventually WOR stopped being a super station so we lost them for WGN.

I have one insane thought and an insane what if...
The thought, maybe ITV should buy up Turner's T channels...
The what if... what if the plan to privatise Channel 4 went through and Ted Turner decided to buy up Channel 4 and take it private, his own personal TV network in the UK?
I could certainly imagine Ted on Channel 4 News "I want to respect the reputation and the legend that this network has. You've always been the station of Britain's counter-culture. I know as much about the British counter-culture as you'd expect an old white guy from the USA to know and you've ran this network for 40 years. You guys know what you're doing. "

Old school TBS & TNT were, pardon my French, the shit. TNT started to suck in the late 90s when it became the Law & Order station. TBS stayed great a little longer. But for that period where they aired legendary MGM movies like Running Scared, Road House, Fletch, etc... all the time in between WCW and some classic old school shows I didn't care for as a kid but would watch now. Dinner & A Movie on Fridays, Monstervision over on TNT Saturday nights. I'll just say real quick, USA was epic at the same time with movies, USA Up All Night. But TBS & TNT destroyed my sleep schedule in the late 90s during high school. They showed an 80s block of movies at like 3 am Saturdays after D&AM. Monday I'd stay up all night watching Mortal Kombat Konqueat and the 2nd airing of Nitro cause I watched RAW live. They played old Luney Toons Saturday mornings on top of Wild Wild West and Briscoe County Jr... Dang. Good times. The end of great TV when they switched. Now TBS just airs Friends and Big Bang Theory. I have no clue what TNT does. They still have the best NBA coverage though. I want to say TBS may have been where I would watch Charles in Charge and Mr Belvedere after school as a kid in syndication. Not positive. Definitely where I watched Saved by the Bell though. The Mrs Bloss years where Zack introduced the episodes and claimed it was their Jr. High years even though the show took place in Indiana.

You are right about Law and Order. It ruins every cable channel. Running all day long, every day. History did the same with Pawn Stars and American Pickers.
