  • I went to Disney World to review Tianas Bayou Adventure For Disneyland. My reviews covers my main three concerns: how is the design, will it work at Disneyland and is it better than Splash Mountain.

    If you didn't know of the "controversies" surrounding the IP Splash was based on, you would've never thought there was an issue. It was about Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear and the dislike two had for Brer Rabbit.
    To interject that the idea that any race would be offended with Splash is way off base. The ride was entertaining, and I presume Tiana's will also be very entertaining.
    Outside of that thought, your videos are very entertaining and a joy to watch.

      And this one is actually based in a salt mine in Louisiana that used slave labor. This all filled the need of a much needed refurbishment, getting Tiana in the parks, and they chose to virtue signal with this whole transition.

      Even if you ignore the racial stereotypes of the characters, you unfortunately can’t separate characters from source material. It doesn’t work that way.

    And how does TBA celebrate everyone?

    It looks good, but sad to see a classic replaced. 😢

    The ride is loosely based on the characters and not on the movie, but you can benefit from viewing the movie. Nonetheless, the attraction story is so thin that it doesn’t even hold up in the entire ride that lasts quite long for a dark ride. Tiana is getting an animal band for the restaurant in 2 scenes in the middle with finale in the last scene is so wasted. And it didn’t even feature the villain, the best thing, Naveen is in the background in the finale. Demoted. So that’s what Disney has done to Splash Mountain.

    I won't be riding until Disneyland, but I get the strong impression that Tianna's isn't quite of the quality that will get Splash Mountain super fans to forgive the loss, which is a shame. I'm older than Splash Mountain, so I don't have that childhood nostalgia for it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to love Tianna's. Still, we have to be kind to people who truly loved Splash Mountain as it was, as they did lose something special to them.

I was quite surprised when you said that your not a Disney movie fan and don’t see the movies. I have always thought that that was the whole point of Disneyland was to experience the movies. If you don’t see the movies then it’s just a ride with characters you’re not familiar with going by you. Imagine seeing Mickey Mouse in the park for the first time and not seen one of his movies. It just wouldn’t be the same. Keep up the great work, Have a magical day! 😊

    There is a difference between a movie being problematic and a ride being problematic. Splash didn’t have any of the problematic elements the movie did. By your logic Peter Pan and Dumbo have to go or better yet Tiana’s ride shouldn’t have been made because there’s an evil voodoo witch doctor and that’s apparently problematic too. Everyone was included in Disney World before and would have been just as included if they built a Tiana ride somewhere else in the park. Disneyland could have had this and Disney World should have gotten a brand New New Orleans Square in the beyond Big Thunder expansion.

    You're so sadly mistaken and misinformed on Splash Mountain. It didn't disparage anyone, it had nothing to do with slavery. Song of the South took place POST Civil War. There were no "Happy slaves". This ride has more roots in slavery, being based off of Slavery Island, I mean Avery Island. I don’t think you could’ve said it any better Brickey! Totally agree with your views and opinions of the attraction. I believe that Disney Imagineering will plus the ride with the years to come and address any areas where the transitions may seem a bit lacking. The first few experiences from the guest will always seem problematic because of it being a version to compare to but eventually I believe people will begin to enjoy the ride more. I feel WDI has done a good job so far and will continue to improve the ride more if possible with the advantage of them starting to incorporate newer and more up-to-date effects and systems that can open up more opportunities for them to innovate and create additions if ever planned to the ride.

    • @A_A610
      @A_A610 День назад

      I think the biggest problem with the new ride is that it seemed to have been redone with genuine malice toward the original (seriously, it seems like Disney gaslit a good chunk of their fanbase into thinking anyone who liked the original ride was a closet Klansman), and that lack of respect toward the original translated into doing basically the opposite of everything it did.
      As much as some people now want to refuse to admit it, Splash Mountain worked so well because the storytelling worked in conjunction with the ride system. While some elements of the update are indeed quite nice, the lack of care with the story is incredibly apparent, and even fans admit they'll overlook it for the pretty visuals and music...which is a troubling shift in Disney's design and operating philosophy. If the "ride or die" fans will support them quite literally no matter what they do, why would they bother caring about the fine details that set their product apart in the first place?

    I'm so thankful I came across Brickey last year and subscribed. This is by far the best review of the ride I've seen so far. Kudos to Brickey for all that he does.
    I grew up on Splash Mountain and like many others I wasn't aware of the problematic origins until much later in my life. I do think the story it's based on had its problems, but Splash was really just a flume ride to me - and the best flume ride at that. I even remember Disneyland before Splash when there was a mountain there, but all that was going on was the sound of a bear that no one ever saw but could hear him snoring from above. It was amazing when they transformed that area to Splash.
    Splash had so many things going on inside it, and it was awesome to find out they had repurposed the characters from America Sings (formerly DL's Carousel of Progress). The other most important aspect of Splash was the cadence and pace of the story. By the time you got to the laughin place the tension was so high with all of the critter chaos going on around you, and then the vultures just before you ascended the lift hill, it was all there so that you had that moment of celebration after you survived the drop. And c'mon, Zippidy Doo Dah was exactly what you needed after the adrenaline rush!
    So, I illustrated all of that because no matter how much we try to avoid it, TBA will be compared to its predecessor, and it's totally normal to do so.
    TBA in my opinion is so well done in appearance, it's lush bayou scenes, the ambiance, everything...it's constructed with the care and detail that makes Disney famous. We all need to thank the construction workers and detailers who put their hard work and sweat into making it.
    That all being said, I would have preferred they made Tiana's ride her own, not repurposed from a legacy attraction. I think that in itself is where the hate is coming from. I have to agree to a point (but not with the vile haters out there), that this whole endeavor created the divisiveness and that unfortunately is what they have to deal with now.
    I'll ride it, and I'll enjoy it and marvel at all of the Disney craftsmanship that goes into these projects, but it is a downgrade when all the points I mention are considered, and that's a shame.
    Until I actually ride it in DL, I've so far seen an exceptionally well executed ride, but with it's own issues. Still, the best flume ride anywhere.

      @@JC-ct7wp completely agree... If you're incapable of identifying with a character unless they have the exact same skin tone as you, then guess what? YOU are the racist.
      Representation in lieu of good storytelling, and/or as the primary motivating factor, isn't "inclusive" it's inherently exclusive. And when that motivation is painfully obvious, it breaks the immersion, and pulls you back into the insanity that is modern politics.
      I don't have anything against Princess and the Frog. In fact, it's the very first Blu-Ray I ever purchased. I enjoy it very much, and I've wanted to see it in the parks. I have a problem with people who condemn Song of the South as "racist" simply because it had the audacity to depict post-slavery black and white people actually getting along together.

    They should have respected this character enough to give her, her own flat dark-ride. Canceling an already established fan favorite was a serious miss-step by the current Disney leadership. As for this attraction, once one becomes acquainted with the actual film, one can see all the incredible missed opportunities they had and maybe better understand another facet of the backlash. If they had to replace Splash for this, at least they could have utilized the movie and knocked this thing out of the park. They Didn't. They prefer mediocrity. Disney in decline. Sad.

Tell me did you figure out the psychedelic tunnel, I saw it in another vlog and it reminded me of the scene in Willy Wonka but it must be a spell from Mama Odie. That's what I thought. Maybe one time I'm down at Disneyland I'll get to meet you.😅

    That's a fair assessment. I kinda thought this will be a much better fit in Disneyland than the Magic Kingdom. But, if they wanted to get away with the ride in the Magic Kingdom, annexing Liberty Square and Frontierland to become the Lands of America might be a better use of theme. 😂

    I’m old enough to remember seeing the Song of the South as a little girl when it was still in circulation. Charming story and great music on the surface but…Disney did the right thing pulling it out of circulation. It’s hard for so many of us who loved Splash Mountain to see it go. It is nostalgic yet, kudos to Disney for taking a beautiful story like Tiana’s and doing this new overlay. THANK YOU for the unexpected “Disneyland” review Brickey! Loved it! Might I add, even though you aren’t a Disney movie fan, you should really watch Princess and the Frog. If you love New Orleans culture, the music and animation are just amazing!!

    So bummed to hear you say splash mountain “wasn’t for everyone “ and that you thought this new ride was fun cuz it “celebrates black culture / history?” I’ve been a subscriber/ supporter of yours since near your beginning on RUclips but this review has me heading toward the door. I didn’t expect you to be critical and risk your Disney media pass but if what you said is truly how you feel then we don’t agree on the state of Disney parks and films. Bummer. Doesn’t mean I can’t stay friendly. But splash wasn’t racist at all. It was for everyone and the stats prove that out. This new ride isn’t half as good as splash and I think you know that. There is no story to follow and ZERO ADVENTURING going on! No antagonist? Less than half the animatronics? This is an epic fail . (IMHO). It’s a cost cutting , woke , mess and we can disagree and I can still like your other content. Nuff said.

    how was splash mountain racist? it's literally about a bear, fox and rabbit

    • @nathanunck7134
      @nathanunck7134 Месяц назад

      The film the story that the story comes from, Songs of the South, is about a little white boy that lives in a cotton plantation, who is friends with a small black boy that is a slave’s child. There is also an old slave named Uncle Remus, and he sings “Slave working songs”, though Disney wrote them, and the story with the bear, fox and rabbit was only half told in Splash Mountain. The full story includes the bear and fox creating a “Tar Baby” where they take tar and shape it to look like a black person, trying to trap the rabbit by making him want to punch the tar. The rabbit is also in the likeness of an uneducated black person. So the movie it’s based on is racially insensitive and portrayed the slaves as if their slave work was fun by singing and telling stories. Disney hasn’t released the film on any physical media. You can find it online, but the ones I’ve seen of it are from other countries where they broadcasted it on TV in the 1980s, and the video quality is poor. Personally, I wish they just kept it, but it was stirring up a lot of trouble with race equality groups, which are very fair and deserve the merit.

      @@HeyBrickey can you explain *_why_* representation matters?
      What matters is good storytelling with universal themes that *_everyone_* can identify with. If that comes from a great film with black culture, like Princess and the Frog, then great! But Disney has been prioritizing "representation" over all else, and it shows in the rapidly declining quality of everything they do.
      Putting so much emphasis on representation indicates a belief that "minorities" are incapable of identifying with a character of any other background than their own, but "white" people can. I'm sorry, but _that_ in itself is racist.

      I like most of Brickey's stuff...but this comment about representation and imagining being a little black girl is just pure WTAF lunacy. 1) It's not Disney's responsibility or place to have representation of every culture and background. If you don't feel welcome or if you go looking for things where you might be not represented, that's entirely on you. I guess you can hang out on it's a small world all day. I'm pretty sure every culture is represented there. 2) Do you imagine being a misrepresented ghost on Haunted Mansion? A misrepresented tribesman on Jungle Cruise? A misrepresented gold prospector on Big Thunder? No, of course you don't. Just stick to your design theories...

      As Brickey said, it's a story with low stakes:
      1. Tiana is throwing a Mardi Gras celebration to thank the community for supporting her food co-op but needs help in finding a band.
      2. Tiana and Louie gather several animal musicians that live in the bayou.
      3. Mama Odie shrinks us to frog-size so that we can gather frog-sized musicians and fireflies.
      4. Mama Odie returns us to normal sized and drops us back into the bayou.
      5. Tiana holds a joyful celebration for all her friends, and Tiana sings "Special Spice.
      Not every story has conflict. Some stories are more "slice of life" stories. But I agree with Brickey that a low-conflict story is not a good match for a thrill ride.

    Splash Mountain > Tianas. The lack of any kind of antagonist or villian to create a problem to overcome for the ride story makes the events of the ride seem boring. It feels more like a forced fit. This attraction belongs as a Fantasyland dark ride, not a thrill ride. The weak story and tension are a mismatch for this type of ride system. It's too much of a happy feel in areas where tension should be building up. I have to say that the exterior of the attraction is an improvement. I love the trees. However, the color of the painted soil and rocks didn't change from Splash Mountain. Instead of the brownish red color, they should have painted the soil more like a bayou (greyish in color). Also, are there mountains in the bayou? Overall, I feel this attraction is a downgrade to what was there before

    • @crosswalkX
      @crosswalkX 3 месяца назад +2

      Yes I agree with you. It doesn't have the song "Friends on the other side" chanting "Are you ready" and that makes it fall flat. Disney World and Disneyland needs to improve their Princess and the Frog ride, I want Pink Flamingos included in the ride, I want to see a tombstone of Dr. Facilier to pay nod from the film. Also I want to see critters like gophers working in Tiana's garden and have Prince Naveen be with Tiana in the first section, also add 3 possums and deer and skunks to make it for lively. I want Louis to sing "When we're Human" They need to fix the drop off and have 2 rows of Pink Flamingos or cave bats chanting "Are you ready reprise?" and have Mama Odie sing along then I'll be more excited because right now. I'm disappointed with the early version of Disney World's Tiana's Bayou Adventure video preview, they need to improve it so they get more people on the ride.

    Appreciate your review but there is something amiss. To your own admission, you reviewed Tiana’s based on how it holds up as a ride with no knowledge of the movie. It checked that box. However you didn’t take the same approach with Splash. Splash also held its own as a ride with no knowledge or understanding of the movie needed. I’m struggling to remember where Splash had any negative undertones to it. Unfortunately, the “salt mine” reference in Tiana’s cue does have undertones which was missed by imagineers.
    I’m still a fan Brickey, but this review felt a little off IMHO. Much love! ❤️
