Considered the greatest mathematician of the 20th century, Alexandre Grothendieck died in France on Thursday, November 13th 2014, at the hospital in Saint-Girons (Ariège), not far from Lasserre, the village where he had secretly retired in the early 1990s, cutting off all contact with the world. He was 86 years old. A stateless man who was naturalized as a French citizen in 1971, and also known for the radical nature of his pacifist and environmentalist commitment, this unique and legendary mathematician leaves behind a considerable scientific body of work.
