That wide pencil lead is created by sanding the pencil lead on a piece of fine sandpaper on the angle you naturally hold the pencil to draw. That creates a flat chisel surface.
Thank you for that info. I thought I was going to have to buy another something. I was considering a flat carpenter pencil. It won't roll off the table at least. Little story. I was surfing Rosemary Brush just to see what was there. Saw a thing on how to clean brushes. They said a good way was to basically use oil to get the paint out and then use Fairy Liquid to wash the oil out. Ohh Nooo another 10 or 15 dollar 2 oz bottle of something. Fairy Liquid! It sounds expensive! It turns out it is their equal to Dawn Dish Detergent. Whew I thought. It works.
Yes, please!! More videos of you explaining your drawings. Loved your comment at the end, that the drawing simplifies the painting process making it fun to paint.
I just finished my third 10x10 painting in 6 days! All inspired by Master Roberts. I've been painting for many, many years. Your approach and clarity of simplistic visualization has brought me back and reinvigorated my art. Thanks IR!
This was a very good video that was helpful in explaining how gradation helps your overall composition. I’d love to see more of this type of video and would be very interested to see the finished painting you do from this drawing or similar future drawing videos.
Seeing the directional strokes was so helpful! I would like to see more drawings step by step, perhaps showing landscapes with a variety of hills in the distance.
Yes, please more drawing videos. What I really like is to see the photograph to drawing, then drawing to painting. Your explanations and examples are excellent. I am a repeat watcher of your videos! I wish I would have had you as an instructor in art school.
So glad you are enjoying the video Michael. I'll probably do another drawing one next time and then do a video of the painting of last week's video. all the best.
Drawing prior to painting is absolutely right Ian! Once the drawing is planted in one’s brain, the painting becomes secondary as it frees you & avoid silly mistakes in the final composition! Thanks again Ian!🙏🏽
Yes, more sketches please! I also love blackwings, both the matte and the natural, but I have never used it as a chisel like you've done-what an innovation! I'll try it directly :) Thank you!
Your suggestion that you do more of the same sort of drawings that you did in the video "Drawing Helps You See the World" is great. I would watch them all. as I am learning a lot!
If I have done such a beautiful sketch, I would stop and frame it instead of painting over. Great job! Imagine how much progress one would have made if one just does one such sketch a day!
Yes! Your drawing process helps to see. Specially the value and direction of each shape. Looking forward for more drawings. Thank you for sharing your skills.
Yes, please post another drawing like the one today. That is a step that I have not done for my paintings but I can see why it is important and why it would make a painting easier to do. Thank you.
I absolutely love your landscape drawings. The way you simplify everything and hone in on the most important bits is inspiring! I would love to see more process videos like this.
Yes- we love these! I encourage my students to also print b & w photos of their images- and to crop and draw thumbnail value sketches from those- especially if they have trouble at first translating color to value.
thank you for this drawing demo, it was a great explanation of how to really simplify a scene and yet, tell the full story. it would be wonderful to see you do more of this type of demo.
Yes more drawings please. So valuable to see how you simplify and see in terms of mass and tone. I’ve tried these with water soluble graphite as I find it easier.
Wow the final drawing is so simple, and yet, so complete... even as a sketch, it works. It sells its idea to the viewer perfectly and lets their imagination fill in the blanks
I don't see a person in the photo, but you added a person standing back there in your focal point! You are such a master!! I never tire of watching you and learning from you! Just plain, Wow!!!
Sir, you have taught me more in just 10 minutes than my whole art semester. As a beginner, I ask you to continue teaching us your techniques 🙏 Thank you.
Yes please! Your videos are so helpful Ian. As an advanced intermediate painter, certain aspects of the process, and results, have always been missing. It harkens back to learning to ski as a kid. I had no access to lessons, and learned by fumbling through for years until I became an advanced intermediate skier. I couldn’t advance past that though without the missing basics. Honestly, I feel like crying. You fill in those missing parts that have eluded me for years. Thank you, thank you.
Well my goodness Ian , bought your Composition book (with dvd) years ago and adore it, and here you are on RUclips! Will literally watch that video a couple of times in a row when I dig it out. Which I do every couple of years!
Beginner here. The anxiety I feel thinking about all the details, colours, mixing and everything else before painting just dropped to zero :D Thank you for the video!
Thank you Ian! I now actually keep a notebook with my composition ideas. It really helped me in the way that if i do not have energy to paint, I can still capture my ideas and impressions. And later I can actually use those and have sound composition.
Wonderful video. What fascinates me the most is Ian‘s open way of presenting his insights: Like a good friend, who cares about you and your connection with art. Uplifting.
Absolutely brilliant. I started drawing and painting during the lockdowns. It brings me joy, fulfillment and I want to continue learning. I really like your style.
Glad you found it helpful Mitch. It really does help to draw, even like a diagram, before you begin a painting so you know where everything sits in space, and in relation to everything else. Best wishes.
That wide pencil lead is created by sanding the pencil lead on a piece of fine sandpaper on the angle you naturally hold the pencil to draw. That creates a flat chisel surface.
Can't draw what you can't see.
Blackwing matte pencils on smooth newsprint or Bristol is a match made in heaven
Thanks for this explanation. I’ve been practicing your method of drawing, but with mixed results. This should help.
Thank you for that info. I thought I was going to have to buy another something. I was considering a flat carpenter pencil. It won't roll off the table at least. Little story. I was surfing Rosemary Brush just to see what was there. Saw a thing on how to clean brushes. I thought it was a carpenter's pencil.
