In Australia we did not get the "Econ" button but my guess is it turns off the climate control for better fuel economy. In my GTI I had for 16 years the auto button was always on, meaning the aircon was always running winter -5 degrees to summer 43 degrees. I note in your video you have the temp set on HI both sides which will just turn the heater on full temperature. Aircon/climate control is not just for summer cooling - it's for winter dehumidifying of the windows.
I would guess air con is must have over there in Australia? I doubt I will have much use for my air con here in England, I only fixed it on my car because I like every last thing to work. You are right about dehumidifying the windows though because mine used to steamed up when I parked the car, hopefully that problem is also solved🙂.
I am new to all this but i have heard MAHLE is a decent brand. I am trying to learn as much as i possibly can about different brands in a short space of time🙂.
@aguycalledjoe7802 I always buy TWR ceramic pads, FAG bearings, ATE brake fluid, HENGST filters, and theirs a purflux/fram cabin filter that's hepa but im trying to find out if its suitable for rhd. I did used to use conti belts and timing kits but now use gates. some good makes for you their. 👍🏻
Man that radiator screws i get so mad when i find things like that, that people fixing the car that way, idk how they are satisfied. I got my brain twisted with the econ button thing, i tought the same as you, but is the other way damn, i tried recharge my car that i bought a year ago, the seller said to me the a/c stopped working suddenly and have no gas, i tried recharge it but only could get 20g in, so i guess the compressor is not starting, i hope it's the solenoid or the g65 if not im screwed and i have to take everything off hahaha Nice video that button thing was helpfull!
Yes it is not nice when you pay for a service & the car comes back worse. I always check other peoples work carried out on my car, unless I have done it but I am learning more & more as time goes one. Hopefully the problem with your AC is not too serious but yes try replacing the solenoid as a cheaper option to begin with👍🏿.
Had a new compressor on mine a few years ago and it’s stopped working. Had it down at a local guy who knows his AC stuff and it was all perfect bar the compressor kicking in. A weeks or so later the canbus died through corrosion so now I’m not sure if that had something to do with the AC not kicking in, as the car lost all communication 😅 Great video though 👌🏼
@andygta i think the compressor can stop working for various reasons but i would start with the cheapest repair first & that would be the solenoid on the front of the AC compressor. VW don't even sell or replace them.
I have always wondered what that ECON button is for. My compressor broke connection between the pulley and the inner parts. A compressor is currently too expensive for me but I also don’t want second hand
That econ button is a minefield for different theories,my air con has never worked neither but my car been black was horrible in the summer lucky for me my engine is toast so I’m on the hunt for a new engine and when I get one I’ll be changing everything to do with the a/c side so it works,I’ve read somewhere that you can change the climate buttons from later models with A/C button and it works as it should light on a/c on light of a/c off but could be wrong
Yes I bet that ECON button has caused so many problems for people. I think one of the biggest problems is when the AC has run out of gas & you just can not tell if the AC on or off because it is not pumping out cold air. Sorting your AC while fitting a new engine is probably the best time to do it🙂.
@@aguycalledjoe7802 gassed my ac at work held pressure no leaks(checked with the proper light) felt cold for about 2min parked it went back to work checked when finished nothing plugged my scan tool in 0 pressure so just give up with it,just need a engine now and get rid of all the performance bits I stuck on it going back to stock
@doitTD this is true, the AC compressor pully is always spinning. No clutch like other AC compressors & thats why it has a solenoid instead. I am no expert on this subject but i bet their are various reasons why these things stop working👍🏿
Hi, not sure if when you changed the climatronic if you swapped cable 16 to 20. im not 100% sure its needed on the gen 2 from gen1 but its defo needed to change to gen3, but i dont think theres a facia for a gen3 in a golf mk5
Hi @sciroccomods yes i swapped the cables when i did the climate upgrade, that is only for the memory setting & does not believe it affects anything else. My friend has got a mk6 Golf so i need to borrow his climate control module just to experiment.
@@aguycalledjoe7802 loads of cool mods to do to these. I'm in the process of doing another scirocco iv just purchased. iv already done all suspension. mk8 r heated wheel. and porsche brakes this week. I just couldn't film myself . shame as I do nice work.
Great job thank you for the excellent tutorial
Your golf is nearly factory fresh :)
@jonathonbrett-qn1ic factory fresh is good way to describe what I am trying to achieve with this GTI. Thank you🙂.

I try to tackle the issues on these cars that many people do not bother with. Glad the videos have helped👍🏿
Also mahle is a decent name, it's who made the factory forged pistons for RS turbos

Yes the ECON is short for economy so when the AC is off you save fuel. AUTODOC list cheaper compressors on their website👍🏿
