  • Hiking Diamond Head State Monument, Oahu Hawaii
In this video we visit Diamond Head State Monument, which is park of the Hawaii State Park system near Honolulu, Hawaii. The prominent volcanic landmark overlooks Waikiki Beach at an elevation of 762'.
Reservations are required for out of state visitors to hike Diamond Head and to park at the visitor center. The entry fee for Diamond Head is $5 per person and it's $10 to park. Currently reservations can be made 30 days in advance. When we visited, reservations were only allowed 2 weeks in advance, so this process is subject to change. To make reservations visit the state monument website at dlnr.hawaii.go...
Diamondhead is the most recognized landmark in Hawaii and it was designated a national natural landmark in 1968. This volcanic tuff cone is believed to have formed about 300,000 years ago during a single, brief eruption.
The original name of this summit is Le’ahi but in the 1700’s Western Explorers visited Le’ahi and saw the calcite crystals on the rocks in the slope of the crater and thought they were Diamonds- thus the name, Diamondhead.
The summit of Diamond Head was an ideal site for the coastal defense of Oahu. In 1904 it was purchased by the Federal Government and designated for military use. Fortification begin in 1908 to include the trail to the summit, the entry tunnel through the North wall of the Crater and construction of gun emplacements. The fortification of this mountain was an engineering marvel of it’s time. Diamondhead was prepared to defend Oahu but no artillery was ever fired during a war.

Thanks so much for the video. Best one I've seen yet. Very informative. Taking a trip next year and just recently thought of putting this on my list but a troublesome knee is giving me reluctant pause. Views might make it worthwhile though.

10 dollars to park and 5 dollars to get in? Wow it's changed. I hiked diamond head in 2019 and it was 1 dollar to get in and parking was free (Reservation wasn't a thing). If parking was full you just had to go back to the bottom or find parking in one of the neighborhoods and walk back up. Hiking diamond head was really awesome. The view was out of this world.

I was there in the 90s. Walked from the hotel at the bottom. The hike up wasn't so nice, lots of people passing out, rescue helicopters. We climbed the staircase inside and walked across the caldera.
      What an adventure 😊

I went up on a Sunday morning not aware of the reservation requirement. The Rangers said I could just pay online at that point and then show the digital receipt. So that worked out for a fun hike. But keep in mind, it was early in the morning 8am; the crowds weren't there yet. Keep in mind that when you go, it's a function of the crowd and times. And as you hike up the hill, you realize why they have the reservations, the path going up becomes single lines at a time (it's not all paved, there are rocky parts of the trail where it becomes single lanes). And it crowds at the top; so the reservation system keeps the crowds moving

I haven’t been to Diamond Head since I was a kid. We are hoping to go next year with the family! Nice that the trail paved which is nice for the kids. I like the use of J Cuts with the audio. I need to do that more on our channel. Our family is taking a 14 day Road Trip to AZ after Christmas and we’ll be spending a day in Albuquerque. Would love to say hi if you are available.

Greetings from Down Under! We did the hike about 6 years ago. Well worth the effort!!! Of course we took the left path. MUCH easier!!! I've got a "finisher's certificate" stamped & signed at the summit which I treasure. I've got heart problems, and I foolishly ignored the large WARNING sign at the start of the trek, and survived. Although the friendly Park Ranger at the summit told me they had at least one medivac a week from up there...BTW, @ 7:03 one can distinctly hear some-one say "Noo South Wales", an Australian state, but we pronounce it: "NYEW South Wales"..🤣🤣🤣Cheers.

It is indeed amazing. We were lucky to be there in October, plenty of rain & I managed a "swim" in the pool at Waimea Falls. Wish I hadn't. Cut my feet on some sharp rocks. Loved all the islands, especially Kauai. Spent some time on Maui. Such a shame about the fires...
