I always wash the watermelon before cutting it up and everyone I know would laugh at me because "we don't eat the rind". Thanks for the vindication, SciShow!
I once settled an argument between my cousin and her husband. Apparently, they were pretty pissed at each other over this one and had been going round and round for days. When I came round to visit, she asked me, "Do you wash the outside of fruit before you cut it even if you aren't going to eat the rind?" "Of course, if you don't wash it, all the germs get on the knife and then get on the fruit," I said as nonchalantely as I felt at the moment. 'I TOLD YOU!!" my cousin yelled at her husband. He didn't even argue anymore because as soon as I agreed with her, he knew that he'd been beat.

Ikr I've experienced all types of sickness but this one has got to be the absolute worst, it's almost been 3 days and I wanna get out of this horrible curse
I've definitely got something going on in my body and it's 100% miserable. Once I manage to fall asleep, I wake up to vomit again. I just want to feel normal again and go back to sleep. 😭
Last april i thought i had food poisoning. I ended up going to the hospital after 6+ hours of writhing in pain and hopping/walking all around my apartment. I have had it before and blamed bad food. Turns out i had an inflamed gal bladder and gal-stones, I had to get it taken out.. So yeah don't blame the food / coworker for spreading germs. It could be something else entirely!
I remember when I was little my mom would teach me to learn by smell if the food went bad or not. Like, if she thought that the mashed potatoes she made a few days ago were not good anymore just be smelling them, she would make me smell it as well so I would learn that that smell means that it's not good anymore. Now I can easily tell if something is gone bad just by smell and if I'm not sure, it goes into the garbage can, better safe than sorry. I did have food poisoning many years ago, and it was always from school caffetteria. Once it was so bad, 80% of the students stayed at home for almost a week, I heard it was the beef roll, I was glad I didn't eat it (I did get sick from another thing I ate but I stayed home just for 2 or 3 days).
Norma, spoilage and it's oder has no bearing on food born illness pathogens. Smells bad chuck it but if it smells ok it may still harbor illness causing bad guys that don't produce an odor.
Hmmm, your Mum was kinda right, but also very wrong. Your nose is a great indicator of food spoilage, but you can't smell salmonella, clostridium, e-coli and campylobacter, and these can cause you real problems - even kill in the case of some strains of salmonella and e-coli. It's a balancing act - obviously you don't want to toss out good food, but neither do you want to take unnecessary risks. It's about making educated decisions - work safe around food and minimise risks, and always treat raw poultry like it's as dangerous as it actually is. Be aware, and use proper temperature controls - much better advice than "trust your nose".
As others have said... spoiled food and contaminated food are NOT the same thing. Many "spoiled" foods are actually quite delicious! Bacteria, fungus and microorganisms make things tasty
Ian Macfarlane Yep this guy knows his stuff. I completely agree with what he says, safety in the kitchen first! I cant state that enough to my own family but it always seems like its falling on deaf ears sometimes... (damn brother and sister dont care >.>)
im telling you right now, food posioning is worse than covid. I've had an experience of both Update: 1 year later i have food poisoning and life is hell
i’ve also had both and they were equally awful in different ways. i may be biased in saying food poisoning is worse bc i have a phobia of vomit, but both have horrid body pains & fevers
I had severe food poisoning today. Woke up sweating and shivering, went to the bathroom and felt like I was dying, vomited 4 times and then at last I felt peace but also very weakened. I ate this traditional street food and it actually felt good first and it was very tasty but then suddenly and unexpectedly the next morning I had the worst food poisoning I'd ever experienced
Same experience I had I've been reading through comments and alot of people didn't go through the puking I puked at least 20 times mine was very severe
Have you tried munching a raw garlic clove? Maybe some ghost peppers? A nice spoon of cinnamon is also welcome. Here in Brazil there is the infamous Durian that frequently send unsuspecting targets under it's tree to the hospital. I've seen one smash trough a car windshield, and believe me i would cry if it was my car.

Mayonnaise: if its bad you feel it as soon as it goes down your throat. Make yourself vomit immediately or you will be very sorry. And never ever give mayo a second thought. If at first you think its bad, throw it out cause if you don't it will throw you out for a time.
Can confirm. First and only case of food poisoning so far was from mayo that had been at room temp for about four hours, knew instantaneously that mistakes had been made. That stuff gets lethal fast.
Interestingly enough, the vinegar or lemon juice mayo is made with can slow bacterial growth, so the potato salad you ate 4 hours ago may not be what hits you. Of course, I hate mayo anyway so someone else can have my share.
Don Cely I brown bag it to school with nothing but baloney sandwich with mayo made at 6:30 am....stored in school locker until 12:00 pm for 9 years....never got sick, never even thought about it....
O.o I've aten mayonnaise that expired in 2015 and has been outside of the fridge a few times for several hours and I was totally fine! I guess I was just lucky...
This is my first food poisoning as im typing this. Im telling you its not a joke. This pain is the worse stomach pain i have felt in my entire life. Been feeling better right now i hope it continues.😥😥😥
I think I got food poisoning less than a month ago. No vomiting (which would have made it obvious), but diarrhea that caused me to eat less and less and gave me sever dehydration. Lasted about a week then I took some smecta (which I should have done from the start but I usually let my body do its thing). I didn't go see a doctor so I can't be certain, but symptoms fit. So when I saw that video I thought it would maybe give me answers. It didn't, not really, but I still learnt stuff. So thank you SciShow!
I have food poisoning right now. I can’t believe I have it again, last time I had food poisoning was 4 months ago and that was my first time. I remember saying I will do everything I can in life to make sure I never get it again! well... ate canned salmon yesterday and that turned out to be a huge mistake. god I feel like I’m dying. help.
I wish I could help ya./: But advice I can give you is, don't eat salmon from a can. That's one thing I only eat fresh. Not that I'm scared of getting sick, it just tastes so much better. Really, just don't eat fish out of a can haha. Though, I do love some canned tuna.
As a person who currently has food poisoning, I didn't have children yet but I imagine giving birth is at the same pain level as this. Never felt this pain before in my life and I broke a bone, twisted both my knees and ankle. Didn't even come close to the pain I am feeling right now.
I've had what I call "one day" food poisoning, where I get stomach cramps after eating something, then it comes out one way or the other rather rapidly and then I pretty much feel fine. It's still fairly rare but it's still a lot more common than a 2-3 day illness, I've only had that a handful of times in my life.
i have had similar things, but i do not think it is caused by the growth of pathogens, could also be eating unusual foods that your body is not used to
I have it, but everything i use the bathroom i just cant, or comes out alittle, my stomach do feel bogus, i get the feeling of vommiting here and there but i dont. But i do sweat a lot from my hands and feet
The only time I had food poisoning was a completely miserable experience. I lost track of how long I was curled up on the bathroom floor shaking and sweating because my guts were in knots but I could not throw up for some reason. When I finally did I felt much better. Why my body wanted to keep that garbage in me is anyone's guess.
I remember one time in an Academy where we took turns serving dinner, and that night it was my team's turn. So we served and at the end realized no one kept some grounded beef on the side so we can eat it at the end. So we ate french fries only. Next day; everyone except our team were running to the toilet stalls all day long. And when the Doctors arrived it was pretty easy determining the source as they could spot the few ones not running quite easily.
Food Poisoning is very common and the only way to combat it is prevention. Everyone must know the bacteria causing it and how to prevent food contamination. Kudos for this great educational video
I've never had food poisoning. I think I have some bacteriophages i got as a kid from eating dirt. Yes, I was a baby that when left unattended would fine dine on earth.
More likely than bacteriophages, which are viruses, is that you 'trained' your immune system to cope with environmental microbes. It's good to do so as a child; the protection lasts a lifetime, usually. It's said that spending as little as one day in a working barn confers immunity to a whole host of things.
Games With Nic What eggs have you been using? A Lot of raw eggs are safe as long as they're pasteurized, hell even in france people eat raw egg and beef (tartar).
Me neither. I think I've had the stomach flu before, which I guess is caused by norovirus, which also causes food poisoning, but I didn't get it from eating bad food, I got it from someone else who had stomach flu
Games With Nic Still though only 1/20,000 eggs are infected with salmonella. Also since the eggs were burned your chances of ingesting enough salmonella to make you sick would still be very low. Unless you're throwing the eggs onto very high heat and taking them off instantly you shouldn't have any problems with getting food poisoning. It's more likely that you got it from a different source. Though you should still look up how to safely cook an egg and for how long.
Actually, bacteriophages will fight bacteria, and not healthy cells. It's highly unlikely that you ate bacteriophages. More likely, it was just a virus.
Are you sure? A lot of people say they have a “stomach flu” or “24 hour flu bug” when they really have food poisoning. Flu lasts more than 24 hours and it won’t just be vomiting and diarrhoea.
Yeah Same when i had that when i was in highschool after a party in class. I felt like i was dying and i had no energy and lost my appetite and i stayed in bed pretty much all day at the time. Horrible experience
I thought most food poisoning issues were from eating something going bad, like with bacteria or mould. But I am aware of viruses, like listeria etc. Thanks for the vid!
I just got a serious food poisoning from eating half cooked chicken nuggets last week, I have high fever for 4 days long and in hospital, more than a hundred times of diarrhoea, was rushed to the emergency room for dehydration, and dropping the water into my veins for 3 days straight, doctor said some of my organs were nearly shut down and I could have a heart failure if wasn’t admitted to emergency room that quick… was definitely a horrible and life threatening experience, I never ever gonna look up to the fridge at 2 am and grab whatever food to eat again… I almost fainted at my bathroom luckily my parent called the ambulance so quick, food poisoning can be very serious
I've had food poisoning at least once, and that one confirmed time... was hell. I was like 8 or 9 years old, and my mom bought one of those giant black-and-white cookies (the cake-like ones with chocolate and vanilla icing). I finished about half of it and went about my day. That night, it felt like a knife in my stomach. I was doubled over in pain. My mom thought maybe I was constipated and told me to go to the bathroom. I wasn't. I ended up crawling out of the bathroom because I literally could not stand. The pain lasted most of the night, but by morning, I was better. How do I know it was food poisoning? Because after I'd gone to sleep, my mom finished the rest of that cookie, and the entire next day she was in just as much pain as I had been. Karma! "Constipation" my as--wait, no, don't finish that sentence. Anyway, that was literally the worst stomach pain I've ever had in my life. Don't know what kind of illness it was (our best guess is salmonella from the eggs used to make the cookie), but I never want it again.
my anxiety has me here. im trying to understand this better because i have severe emetophobia and getting food poisoning is my biggest fear, id literally rather die than have this EVER its kind of interesting how throwing up is your body's way of protecting yourself from whatever bad thing you ate killing you. but then my emetophobia is like "nope. let it kill you. throwing up is way worse" 😭😭
Currently have food poisoning. I felt like I was literally going to die yesterday, couldn't get out of bed all day besides to vomit and well you know. 😐
It would be a great follow up to this video to talk about sanitation using radiation. Most food poisoning caused by packaging would be greatly reduced (and food quality would generally increase) if we irradiated more of our food post harvesting. A great (albeit long) reference is Preservation of Food by Ionizing Radiation by Josephson.
God I had Norovirus one time and my body reacted so badly to it. I was just laying in the hospital bed wriggling around and crying because pretty much everything around my gut was in severe pain. I've broken many bones in my life and I can guarantee you nothing I've ever had to deal with had felt quite like Norovirus. I eventually was given morphine and I was still in a miserable amount of pain, but at least it was bearable.
I got a nosebleed during my open-book test over Foodborne Illnesses in Culinary Arts class today. My teacher let me take the test home to complete since I spent the class period cleaning up a bloody mess. This video was really helpful and conveniently timed for me.
I always get a horrific headache from hell in my forehead to go with everything else..The pain is so bad it makes me feel like I'm going to die and then instantly goes away when I finally throw up
You should do an episode on sushi, and particularly debunk the idea that "fresh" is good. Hint: flash freezing and proper handling are key to reducing the risk of parasites and other bugs.

One time in college I successfully vomited into a toilet despite being outside the toilet stall. Projectile vomiting can indeed be aimed that precisely.
Thanks for this educative video! I have a friend who self medicates with anti biotics and advises other people to do the same when they get food poisoning. A video on self medication would be more than welcome to stop this madness.
doesn't food poisoning have to "run its course" until it's gone? I've never heard of people taking antibiotics for food poisoning. meds for vomiting? yes. meds for diarrhea? yes. but I don't know anyone who takes antibiotics for food poisoning.
The biggest myth about food poisoning is that you got it from a restaurant. You didn't, you got it at home. More than 95% of cases originate in the home. Many people don't sanitize at home, wash their hands before they cook, or check the temperature of the food they are cooking. Have you ever left meat on the top or middle shelf of the fridge? Ever forgot to sanitize the counter after you had raw meat on it? Restaurants, especially fast food, are almost always very clean because there is so much liability. You poisoned yourself.
Uhm okay but that doesnt exclude restaurants, its not like they can never do something wrong you know. Thats how you make it sound like. Sure there is a bigger chance that you didnt pay enough attention to food safety in the kitchen while you were cooking at home. Okay. But that doesnt mean restaurants cant get it wrong either and that they are somehow incapable of making mistakes too. Especially restaurants that dont exactly look like "5 star diners" if you know what im hinting at. The more popular/visited restaurants are obviously also safer to eat at because they're popular for a reason.
This is why I don't cook, my house mates think it's fine to use a chopping board to make marmite sandwiches and use it again later without washing it but it's still had butter on it and flys may have landed on it. They'll use the bread knife and put it back in the knife holder, put raw meat on the top self of the fridge, leave chicken and fish just defrosting in their packets on the bench, they never change the tea towels or dish sponges etc, everything is just dirty and i've never seen a single bottle of disinfectant spray. And when I confront them they say I'm picky because I come from a very wealthy family with a chefs kitchen so everything is stainless steel or marble and able to be disassembled and cleaned easily. My flat is a 1940's bungalow with wooden bench tops and all sorts of places you just can't clean, and my parents won't pay for me to get my own place because you don't get rich paying for everyone else
I literally just puked my guts out in the shower. Thought i was done. Then puked just as much in the kitchen sink. My stomach feels sick. I think I puked up everything I ate today and yesterday. Now I can’t sleep. 🥴🤢🤮☠️
As far as I've heard, we don't really know what causes headaches/migraines/cluster headaches. That's why alot of people who get cluster headaches have turned to an illegal alternative, psilocybin mushrooms. Apparently that's the best thing for them.
I once got it at a quinceanera from chicken alfredo. Never again. The music was super loud that we couldn't hear people next to us so I knocked back quite a few drinks. I knew it was bad the next morning when I had to use the bathroom, then two more people and myself again. Had breakfast and round three in the bathroom before WORK. Two hours and four more rounds before my boss came to check me and let me go home. She didn't believe me because I had a hangover as well.
I got food poisoning once. The beans were under cooked at a Tex Mex place. I instantly knew there was something off about the taste. I went home and spent the next 24 hours by the toilet. Almost consistent diarrhea and vomiting. After that, my body literally went into a coma for 48 hours. I was out cold. I didn't even realize how much time had pass. I went on a water and cracker diet for the next few days to recover. You will know when you have food poisoning. It's undeniable. Your body loses all of its energy, and your stomach will experience pain like no other.

Once a couple years back, got such bad food poisoning that my own father and I thought I was going to die - and that I needed a hospital. Took some real strength to pull through. Never trust empty fancy-looking italian restaurants guys.
By the way, that vaccine research you mentioned- how could I go about supporting that? Is there a way I could donate money specifically for that cause?

Same my girlfriends uterus has urine going back to her kidneys but I just have crazy stomach pains and can’t swallow food

It pays to look at the expiration date too....I was still eating mayo before I realized it expired a year ago....

MR. TESTICLES it usually only lasts a day! but recovering after it will take a little longer because you’ll be sore, tired and dehydrated
As a person who currently has food poisoning, I didn't have children yet but I imagine giving birth is at the same pain level as this. Never felt this pain before in my life and I broke a bone, twisted both my knees and ankle. Didn't even come close to the pain I am feeling right now.
It literally does feel like contractions from child birth
I've had what I call "one day" food poisoning, where I get stomach cramps after eating something, then it comes out one way or the other rather rapidly and then I pretty much feel fine. It's still fairly rare but it's still a lot more common than a 2-3 day illness, I've only had that a handful of times in my life.
i have had similar things, but i do not think it is caused by the growth of pathogens, could also be eating unusual foods that your body is not used to

Hank: "I'm not a doctor."
My hypochondriac brain: "But-"
The only time I had food poisoning was a completely miserable experience.
Does anyone else get "egg burps" when they have food poisoning?
I think you're talking about sulfur burps, and yes it's horrible.
Yeah, sitting on my bed miserable
Usually, but it's also mixed with whatever I ate that caused it in the first place.
I freaking hate it. Good thing it stopped today but now i have diarrhea ugh. Haven't been able to eat in this passed 2 days going on 3
That's something to do with the liver.
So it's a gut feeling?
Hahaha 😂😂
Luckily I've never experienced food poisoning yet
@@adarksidecry lol nah I'm good aha

Don't know what kind of illness it was (our best guess is salmonella from the eggs used to make the cookie), but I never want it again.
my anxiety has me here. im trying to understand this better because i have severe emetophobia and getting food poisoning is my biggest fear, id literally rather die than have this EVER

Yea, absolutely. You aren't supposed to leave food out at room temperature for longer than 2 hours.
It's not impossible, but incredibly unlikely. How many of your meals do you eat at home?
Tell Chipotle that...

I got food poisoning once. The beans were under cooked at a Tex Mex place. I instantly knew there was something off about the taste. I went home and spent the next 24 hours by the toilet.
