- Lets assess Neopets over the years & original artwork. Remember when the Disco Kacheek art was groovy and dressed well? Customization gets tricky with new Neopets paintbrush colors and clothes. Why do the faeries look like they do? Illusen art & all kinds of Neopets lore.
Far away from the troubles that plague the faerie world, Illusen enjoys the quiet refuge of her glade in Meridell. She spends the day tending her gardens and offering quests to the Neopets who come to visit her. Although the items she asks for tend to become more difficult to acquire with each successful quest, she rewards her most diligent helpers with an amazing assortment of prizes.

I don't really care for Neopets, I used to love it, but I'm obsessed with your videos. I don't know if I love how passionate you are, how much knowledge you have on the subject, or just your personality but some combination of those three things has made me subscribed to your channel for a couple months now. Also! I'm a graphic design student in college and I love how you spoke about art. I've had two art history classes and you did a great job. This video was fantastic... even though I don't care much for Neopets! Can't wait to continue supporting you and your videos, keep it up. :)

Um, the faeries necks look fine to me. They don't even seem that long to be quite honest with you. I think translating to real life it might look strange, at least model-esque, but stylistically the proportions look fine.

Is it just me, but when it comes to the best designs? Who is team early 2000's art? I honestly prefer thicker outlines for giving more personality to it, but the more laid back thinner and not as bold look works, they should just get two artists to make variants of the clothes depending on styles, but the simple vs. complex textures I can't stand.
I like the early 2000s team too! I feel like the art was canonically consistent and had a deep understanding of the game lore during that era.
Ohhh mannnn. That early 2000's fashion they had on the faeries.. One of my absolute favourite things about the old art. LOL. You're right, it's sooo reminiscent of old pixel dollz.

it's almost 5am and i'm watching a video about the sociopolitics of the neopian faerie world and i am DELIGHTED about it, tbh ahahahah... thank you for this video!!! i thought there wasn't a way to make me more nostalgic but then, the hilary duff music stings (amongst all of this PERFECT editing omg)..... the cher reference (i still love her to this day lol)... in short, everything about this video is inspired, thanks for blessing the internet/my night with this one

It's funny because I'm a young person (as in I was born around the time Neopets first came out) who played Neopets a little when I was young but didn't understand it, and I don't find much interest in Neopets. And yet all of your Neopets videos are so interesting and I love watching them so much. Your narrating skills and editing skills are amazing.

when I was younger and petpet park came out I had night terrors thinking that it would take neopet's place and it would be cancelled. I used to buy every toy from target but they discontinued some time in 2009 and I cried and cried. I love neopets since 2000. Its just pure childhood to me
I personally prefer the thicker lines, bright colours, cell shading and more simple designs than the newer stuff. Stuff that you called bad I really like, its just such a nice style.
Oof, that Plushie Kacheek in that beautiful dress was so hard to look at. Subeta is having kinda the same problem, but the consistency is way bigger. Just now some items with colored artline are coming up, but that might mean we'll have a major problem in the future. The bright side is that Subeta revamps lots of items (being wearable or not) and pets, though.
Faerie pets can be a pain to customize, especially ones with oversized wings like the lutari!

It's just fun to look at what they're capable of now and then comparing it to their Neopets days. It's kinda like looking at your idol's embarrassing baby pics.
It's also just super inspiring to see how people like Claire Hummel went from Neopets to working for places like HBO
5:32 I know styles will vary depending on the artist but if you have to drastically change a creature's design to make it do something it normally couldn't, that's wrong.
idk if you'll see this because this is such an old video, but i just wanted to comment that even though i have no experience with neopets at all (an ex girlfriend from high school got me to make an account, which is the extent of my personal experience lmao) i've just been binge watching your and kat's videos about it. you guys make it so fascinating and make me want to start playing once the new flash-less version has more to it.

I loved the way you said about the shading, the line art, the colours, and giving examples. Because I love digital art, but I have no formation and your video felt like an enjoyable class. I will certainly use this on future.
I noticed this the other day with art inconsistency when I zapped my purple poogle and saw the original orange freckled version as the sad picture when you zap your pet and I was all like ??? :^)

I understand that digital art tools were sub par back in the early days of neopets, but oh lorddd the old art is so bad. Its like a 12 year old drew them in kidpix or ms paint, something like that. It's probably because I've never played the game, I have no nostalgia for it. The old art just hurts my soul to look at it.
Without the lens of nostalgia, it's hard to stomach that art! They were using very entry-level, early tools. It's impressive how far the art has come.
I came back to Neopets after like 10 years and the fact that nothing has changed since the 2.0 overhaul was equal parts nostalgic and infuriating. Brought back all the anger of when they first fucked up every single Neopet's design just to fit their stupid NeoCash clothing scheme. those stupid fucking fists that 90% of the pets are holding up

julie i love your videos!! neopets in particular is such an incredibly nostalgic piece of history for a whole generation of internet denizens, it really is sad and bizarre to see the current state of things. i really thought this franchise would have weathered the years well, but it seems to have aged surprisingly poorly.. although i still love and cherish the old art. neopets why can't i quit you
out of curiosity, have you ever played aywas? i'm not sure if it's still active but that is another site i enjoyed a few years back. subeta also comes to mind.

just real quick- it's "Dee-vee-ant" art, rather than "Dah-viant". "Deviant" being a word that means 'unusual' or 'different from standard' and is usually an insult but deviantart is being cheeky about it.
Deviantart is one of those phrases that I didn't hear out loud until I got to college. Internally, that's the way I've pronounced it all along and it remains stuck in my head. But you're definitely correct, I do pronounce it incorrectly. You're also correct about the definition. Thanks for watching and for commenting. :)

MNPGA!!!! Join Balthazar by putting those pesky faeries in their place! In a jar! I loved the game when I was a kid. I had a peophin as my first peopet. I remember when the Yurble came out. Kind of lost touch with the game when I found Runescape. After that it was all history. Never picked up the game again until 2015 A lot has NOT CHANGED which is kinda sad, I had to make a new account too but oh well, not like I had rare stuff on it anyways.

I like using music from the era of Neopets' heyday in videos about it! Also, I love Hilary Duff something fierce. The Christmas paint brush and colors are still around! The Christmas elephante is green in a santa suit.

I'm not sure why you keep bringing up Pokémon, Pokemon art for the most part has consistently been good from the beginning excluding gen 1 battle sprites and gen 1& 2 over world sprites.
I love Pokemon art and it's internal consistency. :) After the first round of Neopets art, the second generation was very much influenced by Pokemon style.
i used to have an art book of neopets or something, it told a good amount of lore and i remember it being kinda fucked

I know this video is old but I disagree that the new art is better. Imo the fact that they havent been able to stick to the style guide that was set up since they fired the original TNT just looks like the art team has no idea what theyre doing. Its unprofessional, not that thats new for Neopets.
Theres situations where more shading and detail would be preferable, but Neopets needs to commit to their signature style.
