    Wonderful adventure in the mountains! I really enjoy how you capture the atmosphere of the hills… flowing, tumbling water, long rock walls, clumps of grass and heather, … far off views of the lake. Loved seeing the horses and cows too, adorable! 🩷🩷 Great camp spot and bivy set up … I wonder if I could sleep in one… I’d love having lesss weight to carry! Interesting to hear about the water issues… it all looks so clear and clean. We always filter and/or boil water just to be safe. There are so many animals and pollutants here that it’s always recommended. Thanks for bringing us along! 😄👍👍 - Jen

      Cheers Jennifer👍 The Mournes get alot of visitors (much more since Covid when many more people started going hillwalking) and there continue to be issues with people leaving rubbish etc on the hills. We have no National Parks here in N. Ireland, like you do over there with I think strict guidelines and enforcement on how to treat the parks. The water high up is very clear and I would usually boil though have on occasion drank it straight from source. I do love the bivy when the weather is right though the tent is good (and perhaps more comfortable) for these longer nights with more time to get through😊

    Great video Gerry, good to see you doing the western mournes, I also often think about the lack of trees and how the mournes would have once been covered in native forests like parts of the Lake District and Scotland. Love the shannagh river waterfalls,cows and horses

    Hi Gerry. Agree about the lack of trees, how different the landscape would be with a few more. Love the quietness of the Western Mournes. re the water quality - The policy of Daera of "going for growth" has been at the expense of the environment. We produce enough food for 10 million people but with only a population of 1.9 million - we are drowning in slurry.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  11 месяцев назад +2

      The fact that I get excited about a solitary tree says it all! Love the current conversations about rewilding and the potential for farmers to get payments to allow the land to be naturally. I don't visit the Western Mournes enough and it was good to be reminded how cool and how quiet they are👍 The amount of slurry put on fields here is enormous and you can see it in the lowland rivers. I am not too hopeful of any change, especially looking at the state of rivers in England.

No shortage of water for the tea and ginger nuts either 🎉 Some lovely sights along the way - would the new potential bivy spot not be a bit too noisy from the waterfall if full like that? Miriam, my old cap literally fell apart from so much use and this one will go the same way😊 It was great to be planning an following a new route through the Mournes, always worth taking a bit of time to look at the map and get a sense of what might work👍 I think I got a bit exciting with that waterfall and a wee bit of flattish ground - the noise was deafening😊 I also had some feedback that camping so close to water might challenge the Leave No Trace principles so will be thinking about that in the future.

    One of your best mooches about the mountains for a while gerry. Yeah, I get the concern about the rivers - I was watching Loch Neagh the other night - what a mess. But hey, the scenes and views were as good as ever. Fantastic route too, which led you down that gorge in search of c amp. Very impressive indeed! Nice and still also - no midges I take it? Well, you sure were one of the few people out there - such a great feeling. All the best as always. Mark

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  10 месяцев назад +1

      Mark, you know well over there how industrialised farming impacts our waterways as well as the profiteering water companies. Over here there is a similar cycle of industrialised farming, with fields being sprayed with cow slurry month after month to grow grass that feeds the cows over winter. This high enrichment of the earth has to run off into our waterways, especially after the wet summer, and ends up with the situation we have with Lough Neagh. On lighter note it was cool to explore some rivers that (hopefully) had no pollutants👍

    Howdy Gerry, love your vid and your vibe. I am pleased to hear you promote Leave No Trace. FYI: Camping right next to water is not considered LNT, unless when you get an urgent call of nature you make a dash and take 70 steps away from the water to discharge waste. Or use a WAG Bag. From Leave No Trace Ireland: "Although the topic of human waste can be a particularly uncomfortable issue with visitors to the outdoors, it is very important to address it directly. Never miss an opportunity to use a proper toilet facility. If you must go, in the outdoors, deposit solid human waste in a hole dug 10-12 cm deep at least 30 metres (70 steps) from water, campsites, and trails." It would be a public service if you could mention now and again LNT in some detail, especially with so much litter in Irish beauty spots. I don't mean to lecture; it's just I have seen a few vids lately of people in Ireland who promote LNT while camping by water. Another reason not to camp by water: it's a cold, wet place. Looking forward to more of your vids.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  11 месяцев назад +2

      Cheers Michael👍 Not a lecture at all, always good to have conversations, especially on important topics like this👍 It is perhaps all to easy to say that you have left no trace without actually explaining what this means in practice. Definitely something I will talk about in future, as well as thinking about how close I camp to water.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  11 месяцев назад +2

      Cheers👍 It has to be grazing that stops the trees from getting established. You can see it in steep sided river gulley's where trees have managed to grow where sheep can't get to them. I know the National Trust have reduced the number of sheep grazing their land in the Mournes and hopefully farmers will get payments in the future to allow more natural processes to take place on upland areas.
