  • What a joy to sail and care for wooden boats. The smell and comfort of a wood cabin. Salt crystals glistening on a teak deck. The smell of Epifanes. Enjoy some clips from our time with SV Nierika. Lyle Hess design 26 footer, built in Nova Scotia of longleaf pine, bronze, oak, teak and spruce.

I recall reading an article about Morning Song and the builder. Certainly a meticulous sea creature and I am glad to know she is sailing again. It was fun putting together this video and reliving some of the adventures. Fair winds

Beautiful boat and fun to see so much familiar coastline - makes me homesick! Fair winds…

Beautiful vessell. I have been in love with Lyle Hess's design and avid reader of the Pardey's books which (I'm guessing) you've probably read as well? The oil lantern, the varnished wind vane trim tab, the classic windlass, the cosy interior, the hanked on front sails... All is inspiring and comforting to see that old ways still have a long way to go. Have a good holiday and end of year.

Beautiful Boat! As a young naval architect "back in the day," I of course studied several designer's works. Among my top favorite designers were Colin Archer, Carl Alberg, and of course Lyle Hess. The vessel you featured in this video is a classic Lyle Hess design and the Nova Scotia craftsmanship shows in it's construction. I'd be quite proud to be the owner of this boat. To me, there has always been something special about wooden boats. I played the US Navy "Sea Chanter's" rendition of "Haul Away Joe" while watching this video and I think that enhanced the viewing experience. Thanks for putting this video together - I very much enjoyed it. Merry Christmas!

Nice boat and video! We have built a 30 ft. I am interrested in the windrudder/vane that is fitted. Can you kindly provide some info on that!

@@JanDArcy-i1b thank you. Sorry but I can not recall the name of the vane manufacturer, but it was built in the uk by a small engineering company and was a trim tab based system.

@@simplymessingaboutinboats7267 Thank you for your information. Our boat is the Taleisin design. We built it traditionally with massive wood. Oak planking/oregon pine deck. Gaff rig. Retractable bowsprit. Cheers!

Did you swap your Contessa 26 for this beauty? Love your work here btw. Very much like my sailing adventures here in Maine where I'm all alone. Not much talking, just trying to make way and looking around. I currently sail on an O'Day Daysailer that I fixed up, but I'd like to get a Contessa 26 when I'm ready so I can do some real cruises further along the coast.

Funny how it goes. Other way around actually. Hess then Contessa. Now sailing a similar day sailor to your o’day. Glad the videos have reached their intended audience. Winter is hard :)
