"Keep the clock ticking until HE TURNS THE HOB OFF!" Jamie letting the stern parent show :P
That kind of plays into my suggestion, not only Jamie's "request" but also, instead of just Ben judging, have the boys do 3 meals across 3 days, so each cook each day, but also their family judges. I believe all of them have kids, but if Mike doesn't then even just having Mrs Huttlestorm would be fun to hear her feedback on his cooking, and on the entertainment of his cooking.
Request! Can we have the same series, but with chefs? So maybe... Ben, Kush and James coming back as a guest? (Let's be honest too, we'll gladly welcome James back anytime) 😁
That would be fun! And I’m curious to find out where they would take it.
Seconded
I'm throwing my name behind this excellent suggestion
I agree, but maybe add Poppy in there too.
James went back to his mountain for training.
6:43 Barry starts chopping
6:49 the chopping is done, but Barry has gained a suspicious plaster…nice edit! 🤣
Yup….. he managed to cut himself while cleaning the knife 🙈
@@SortedFood Classic Barry
@@swissfoodie3542 well… of course there’s editing on the challenges because the video isn’t an hour long…
@@swissfoodie3542 should this be 1.5 hour show? Ofc they edit it but i guess they do keep the time they are alotet to cook in real. We just don't see it all
@@SortedFood love the added detail that he cut himself while cleaning it :D
The way Jamie perked up as soon as Barry said “slaw” is everything
Yeah
The order wasn't just about disguising the "left-overs salad" though, doing the salad first while everything was super fresh was absolutely right. But I'm surprised Baz couldn't buy a small quantity of block cheese!
I thought doing the salad first was a good idea too because the lettuce would be freshest and the pickled slaw is going to get stronger and better as each day goes by
Depending on the place he shopped at, the grated stuff may be less expensive _per unit_, which sometimes is the make or break on a budget-limited challenge.
@Finwolven the boys said it was the most expensive way to buy it and Barry said he'd chosen it only to avoid a wastage penalty because it was the smallest amount available
Sometimes it's better budget wise to use the smaller quantity if it means there is nothing going into the trash can.
@@mfowl777 Cheese doesn't feel like an ingredient that should get a wastage penalty though, because you wouldn't actually waste it. You have plenty of options to use up whatever cheese you're left with.
I've got to say, Barry is great at these, it feels like this is his niche. And he's right, making the use out of ingredients across the week doesn't just mean the ingredient, but the "leftovers". I often roast a whole chicken, shred the meat after then use that already cooked meat into curries, sandwiches, pies etc throughout the week and it's great that he did that with the salad and the bacon here. Well done Baz.
I do the same, I’ll use one breast with some creamy pasta, another in a salad, the legs in a curry and then any leftover meat on the carcass plus the wings I’ll make a chicken and sweet corn soup for 4 different meals from one chicken then use the bones to make a stock in my slow cooker with any vegetable trimmings etc
@@NJTRAF Love it! Smart cooking right there. My usual go to, roast dinner, chicken and leek pie, chicken curry and coronation chicken, then the same as you make the stock from the bones. You've got me wanting to try the chicken and sweetcorn soup now, maybe some noodles.
Baz is a weekday king!
They all should be able to cook in their sleep. They've been cooking together for over ten years. Ten years getting paid to cook makes them all professional chefs. Dont be silly.
Last week, after Easter, we had lamb Mediterranean wraps, lamb tikka masala, and lamb/veggie stew
He annihilated this challenge. I think his cooking deserved the badge because of the efficiency. Midweek meals you want to cook quick if you're tired after work. I'm impressed.
Pausing in 11.48 to write these: Barry is so mature and calm and collected in this episode, it actually scares me a little. Well done Baz! 😯😯
I really feel like being a Dad has really suited him!!
In the words of Mike: "I don't know this man."
Baz is in his element in these challenges! He has an idea and executes it with a minimum of fuss. I feel these were pretty safe recipes, but when you're doing midweek meals then that's what you want! Nice work, Baz!
It's amazing how calm the person gets when making something you are familiar with, instead of curve balls! Really inspiring
Barry has a great planning and is such a calm and collected presence when he puts the effort in, and such a wonderful chaotic disaster when he tries to adjust on the fly 🤣
You could really see how much it pained Ebbers to give Barry all three badges 🤣
As much as it clearly annoyed Ebbers that there was not a great deal of “cooking” in the dishes, it hit the quick, easy and low waste brief perfectly, well done!
That was impressive planning, cooking. I always let the lettuce wilt in the fridge it’s great reminder to start the week with the salad and finish with the dry. Honestly, Barry is the most improved since I started watching this channel 😊
Letting Barry cook in his preferred style, with full control of the activities, and not being subject to any interference we got to truly see the range of qualities and skills he has but rarely has the opportunity to demonstrate in other videos. He planned well, shopped intelligently and cooked calmly and got everything right following a personally devised plan rather than experimenting and putting himself at jeopardy
Seeing that Barry has shopped at waitrose (despite just saying 'A more expensive supermarket'), makes this *really* relatable, as my only nearby supermarket is Waitrose so everything I get comes from there.
American here. Is Waitrose as posh as Michael McIntyre jokes about, such as the “Waitrose push”?
Barry is always the standout in these. Let’s go Barry!
He’s been having a winning streak recently 🔥
@@SortedFood Relaxed Barry is a problem, Panic'd Barry is 3rd place.
I did wonder why no seasoning, but Barry does make a good point about toddlers and fussy eaters in general. Plus, all that cheese means there's not much need for salt any way.
And the olives and the anchovies and the bacon -enough sources of salt :)
@@Snowshowslow My thoughts exactly.
Barry has gotten so good at these battles. And his badge game has improved dramatically.
Love seeing Barry cooking with style! Keep up the incredible work guys! Love you all!
More to come 😁
I have never seen Baz so calm and collected, I'm impressed!
This is basically the same kind of stuff that I like to make - not super complicated, but full of my preferred flavors.
Honestly, I would be more than happy do dig into this menu, all looks and sounds intriguing to me
Love to hear it!
I’m a college student who really appreciates this series. I live in a tiny studio and really don’t have the room/money for a store cupboard. This has given me lots of ideas for buying my weekly groceries
And it's not like you're strictly limited to a $24 budget like they were, so if you see something missing or something the boys in the video think would improve the dish, you can always add that to your own personal version.
I don't have a pantry either. I use the fridge. As a side note have heard this makes the fridge run more efficiently as well.
This is Barrys best performance yet
Baz comparing his performance last time he did this, to the birth of his child caught me so off guard I cackled
I have to give Barry a lot of credit for not only having little food waste but even less time waste. I would struggle to get some meals done in twice the time he did. I do give people grief when it is deserved but I also need to be equally diligent with praise. So while I am harsh with Barry it is only because he has a chef's jacket now. With that said, performances like this are ample justification for why he has it. Well done, Barry.
Gotta give Baz credit, he really nailed the mid week meal vibes with this one. Especially with a more hearty meal at the end rather than just the scraps
I think Barry typically kills it in these types of challeneges. He really thinks like a midweek home cook. The fact he started with the salad and moved components down the line is upcycling 101. Well done. Never even thought to start with the salad and work down. Learned a tactic today.
Before I started watching, I was thinking "Can Berry do this again? In my heart, yes he can." After watching, "Berry didn't let us down!!!!" Awesome job Berry!!!!
This was fantastic. And I like that one meal was more meatcentric, one carby and one very healthy. Three heavy meals would have been too much. But, normals like me who don't want to increase their waistline can benefit from this cooking here. Thank you!
Let the chaos reign over the realm of the Prince of pointless pretenciousness!
Pretentiousness. Sorry.
Mike is such a nice person. He always appreciates his friends’ cooking and compliments their food tastes amazing ❤
I wished they got to pick one unique ingredient for eachother. Like a "sabatoge" but in a fun way.
I'd rather the content focused more on food than entertainment value, because for me it's the cooking and the food and the thinking about what we eat which is entertaining. I'm glad their videos have less gimmicks than they used to, sometimes it was fun, but sometimes it just felt frustrating because it got in the way of the food.
@@fabe61 But sometimes you do get sabotaged. Example: you're planning to make a specific dish. You checked your pantry to make sure you have certain ingredients and then you shop for the rest. You come home to start cooking only to find either a) the pantry item is "expired" or b) another person in the house ate said item.
Sometimes the best invention of food is because of substitution.
Based on Jamie's suggestion, Barry was in fact 3 days over time as he never turned off the hob :D I still wouldn't turn down any of the dishes here, just waiting to see the next step.
Plus supporting a comment suggestion from a previous week - have them do a shop then switch the bags on them to see how it turns out. Delicious chaos I hope!
I love these challenges more than the ones on other channels. They have to buy their own dry ingredients and everything where other channels will buy like 2 things for 10 dollars and pull out hundreds of dollars of ingredients and specialized equipment from the kitchen to make their "simple" dishes.
Barry was very relaxed and calm during the process, very impressive.
Ben looks quite at ease with his top button on his chef jacket undone.
14:07 Barry getting possessed by the oven demon lol. loved the recipes! The pasta looked amazing and the slaw to go with the burgers sounds like a great option when you wanna have something other than fries to go with a burger. Super impressed.
edit: also, people who don't reason their food until they're done cooking rise up!! I gotta do that because otherwise my food ends up being too salty.
I am home/wheelchair bound due to surgeries and I look forward to all of your episodes. Barry did a great job today!!!
Be more Barry! You've inspired me to bake a loaf later for a charity bake sale at work - thanks for the great content boys!!
Best of luck with the bake…. You’ll smash it 🙌
Something you have talked about before is limiting wastage, cleanliness, etc. I think it would be a great idea to do a One Pot/One Pan Pass it On, where you can only use one pot, one baking dish, one pan, maybe even one serving/stirring utensil. That would limit cleaning at the end (hopefully) and I think really fits with the midweek, easy cooking/cleaning theme.
Barry did well, but overall Mike's dishes seemed a lot more interesting/appealing. Great job on the calm and lack of panic, though! I think this series should come with a sort of post-game podcast where everyone discusses how they got on and their thoughts watching the others and the end result (after all the episodes are out, obviously.) So much of what goes on during gets (understandably) cut for the vids, it would be great to get a deeper insight.
I’m with you. Other than the salad, they weren’t what I’d personally want to eat. Too much pork for my taste
@@Emcobb2 Jamie will read that and wonder: there's something as too much pork?
@@christinebenson518 so, so true!
@@christinebenson518 to be fair, _I_ read that and thought "There's something as too.much pork?" XD
Barry is very calm today!
From “Do rocks burn?” to “And can you peel a sweet corn?”, we all grew up.
It is a joy to read your comments here and under TISS lmao
@@manasi.deshmukh Omg that’s so sweet! Thank you!
@@manasi.deshmukh what is TISS?
a true OG reference 😂
It's a good question though, with a positive answer - coal is a rock, and it burns!
The meals all looked delicious and, as Barry said, something you would realistically cook midweek.
People make jokes about Baz always leaving the hob on, but nobody talks about the fact, that he always hits the cutting board with the blade of the knife, before he starts chopping:D
Ben is straight SASS this episode
Honestly all three of those look bangin'. The time management was incredible! I think he should get a time management badge as well, for using roughly what, half the time between all three meals? For midweek meals, that's _at least_ as important as budget and waste in my mind.
That third badge seems very generous
I would love to hang out with Barry and enjoy any of his mid week meals. I cant cook to save my soul but he seems to always make the impossible, well, possible
I'm glad Ebbers pointed out the leftovers, off to the side, at the end. I totally didn't notice until he did that. Need to go rewatch Mike's to see what his was. 😄
this went really well! I love and really appreciate the tactic of carrying over cooked components - as someone who definitely cooks a lot with base + leftovers in various forms, it's closer to the thought process than the looking at ingredients inventory as a whole set to use efficiently
A pinch of bicarbonate soda and water in with the onions will make them cook down and go brown in 5-7 minutes. It’s not as good as properly done onions, they turn slightly to mush, but it can be an incredible time saver when you’re putting onions in something like a blended pasta sauce (I know the challenge wouldn’t let him use bicarb, this is just a tip)
Barry absolutely crushed this challenge!
Barry's description as 'posh student grub' is pretty damn spot on. I generally like cooking and will definitely try new things/make more extensive meals, when I cook for myself on a daily basis, it comes out a lot like this. A couple of standard dishes that I'm really comfortable making (and therefore, way faster at), and change up the ingredients is peak midweek meal for me
It’s literally impossible for anyone to dislike Barry because he’s so cute and loveable like a puppy even though he’s an adult in his thirties he’s got the mentality of an infant 😂😂 but for as much as we all love Baz, it was actually slightly painful seeing how predictable he is cooking a spaghetti bolognaise 😂
Me sneaking out at work to watch Sorted...
Watching it again later in comfort so I can laugh as loud as ever 😂😂😂
Great job Baz🎉
JAMIE SPAF...STEP UP TO THE STOVE PLEASE 😂😂
Great job Barry. You have come a long way. On a side note, seeing the metal bowl catch in slow motion would be epic.
12:29 Add a pinch of baking soda. It will raise the pH, softening the cell walls quicker and get jammy faster. Too much though makes it mush.
You have to agree that Barry deserves all 3 badges 🙌 Love to see this clam and collected version of Barry!
Am I the only person in the world who takes of my wedding band when I cook ?
A very well calm Baz. Not something I expected. Especially after the under 10 minute burger.
This is peak kitchen barry tbh, he was phenomenal imo 👏👏👏
I feel like this is the first time in a challenge like this that the food has been cooked for a family with children, rather than just adults. Would love to see more recipes in future that cater towards children, while still being good for adults
Barry's comments about not seasoning until the end because of their toddler got me to thinking. Sorted started with trying to teach uni students how to cook; now that everyone is all, ahem, "grown up" ("You're 35!) and now that all the normals are dads, how about some more family-style cooking? I can see a couple of tacks: 1, just general "good food that kids will like too" and 2, ways of keeping the adults sane with flavors or ingredients that are more bold but being able to incorporate bringing along the kids without having to make completely separate meals for them. The "Leveled Up" series you guys used to do is an excellent version of that. Simple for the kids, but elevate it for the adults without a lot of extra work.
Just a note on chili heat, it's not actually the seeds that contain the capsaicin (which is what creates the heat), but the pith. The seeds become spicy because they are in contact with the pith, and get coated with some capsaicin but the pith is where all of it actually comes from.
I’d like to see a variant of this series that’s relay style, with points for both individual dish and teamwork.
As an example: all 3 normals choose the shopping list together, and draw lots for who cooks first, second, last.
Depending on the share of the items, teamwork points can be worked out - if a normal chooses to sabotage the dish of another by using more than their share of ingredients/an ingredient, they might increase the likelihood their individual dish will score well at the cost of lowering their teamwork score.
If the last person has been left with almost nothing from the shopping he can raid elements from the completed dishes, but loses teamwork score with more elements stolen or key elements intentionally stolen.
It would be fun to see the mixture of cooking and plotting, figuring out if they can produce a good enough dish to sabotage the others.
Barry's salad looks scrumptious.
Clever planning, no doubt about that. Cooking pasta in unsalted water however... that makes the Italian ancestors cry.
A salad, a burger, and a pasta.
That is the most safe dishes in a challenge in this channel i think
While I'd prefer to be SERVED Mike's, I like Barry's the best so far, because he's cooking like I do midweek. Like 10 minutes cooking a familiar meal with maybe a new ingredient, using cooked leftovers as parts of other dishes, doing most of the seasoning at the end because not everyone likes the same thing.
And of course the sudden knowledge that he used the wrong bottle of oil is just too accurate, I will never live down the day I mixed up my Soy Sauce and Vanilla Extract. I buy vanilla in bulk, so the bottles were the same size...
Trick to fry onions faster - once they start sizzling, add 1 or 2 tablespoons of *boiling* water to the pan - the steam from the evaporating water distributes the heat through the onions more efficiently, breaking down the cell structures and starting the caramelising of the sugars faster. Cuts the frying time by 1/3 to 1/2.
Barry got called out 😂😂😂😂
The plan to do salad first was smart, he just tried to sound smart'er
So far both Mike and Barry done some of their best most calm cooking.
I get the impression that James and Ben are typically the most lenient toward Barry and the most critical of Mike. Interestingly, Mike is the most self-critical member of the SortedFood team, whereas Barry is, well, Barry (need I say more?). The moral of the story is that people's perception of your skills often reflect your own, so it is better to be over-confident than overly self-critical.
Or that Ben should be more realistic, less lenient.
To get the onions softer quicker, add a bigger pinch of baking soda. Warning, they turn super mushy and yellow but the hint of baking soda is great in tomato based sauces.
Same as Mike a strong showing from Barry. Well done!
this was insane coming from Barry! really calm and cool
Love to see Barry in his element! Always nice to see him calm and collected 😂
Rooting for Barry! Go on lad 😂
He can do it! 🙌
Always get pumped up when the Room 101 theme tune starts
I think Bazz not letting Ebbers distract him was the high point of the video!!!
Thank you for including stuff kids will like!
Barry played it super safe and I think he could have challenged himself a bit more like he did last time round. All good mid-week dishes though
Barry does so well in these challenges!!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Bucatini is my favorite pasta shape.
I like the idea of that salad. I sometimes like a big salad with lots of flavor for dinner - don't compromise on taste, but loads of fresh veg.
You are right Barry, we Italians born in Italy, do not agree or will ever put mozzarella or any kind of soft cheese on a pasta dish unless it is cooked in the oven, like lasagna, pasta al forno, etc.. You do you.
I miss the poker face challenges would love to see them come back. Great content always thank you.
I like this format - simple and instructive. While this is based around mid-week, should also do a week food prep. I find with a few kids hard to do interesting food for the week (e.g. lunches) when rushing out the door.
I'm impressed. I think Barry did a really good job here. Congrats! Those are well deserved badges.
The exasperated "You're 35" is very good
Baz knocked this out of the park. Great ep
Baz just almost getting beamed right in the face. Classic.
"I don't season till after. I'm cooking for a toddler". I respect the heck out of that statement. I took cook for toddlers. There's only so far you can go unless you want to cook 2 different meals every night. Or worse yet. Get takeaway.
I never understood why my mom didn't make my brother try more foods as a toddler. To this day the only vegetables he'll eat are : carrots, corn, peas and the occasional sprinkle of lettuce on a taco. Fruit is worse: he'll only eat apple sauce or drink apple juice. He's 22 and he only eats vegetables if I cook for him.
@@christinebenson518 We put something "new" on every plate. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Trying something new means being Brave! We have good days and not so good days. Toddlers are a fickle bunch.
6:07 Mike's mouth just hanging open in utter fascination at what's going 😆😂
Barry is the king of "technically" badges. The amount he has gotten on like a "technicality" is incredible haha
Make this a sidekick recipe! Only the treacle used looks like a more expensive brand.
Swap for brown caster sugar, palm sugar, pannenkoekenstroop or maybe marmalade since that is cheaper in the UK.
I'd eat all those, and I like the idea of prepping something on night one that can be used in different ways throughout the week. Much nicer than eating the exact same meal three nights in a row, which I've been known to do...
Budget episodes are the best!
