    Nick, thanks so much for the great review! Couple things...
    1) I think you have a fingerprint (or two) on the lens! When I watched your sunlight test, and your outdoor cruising footage I could see a general haze in the picture - a bit more in the upper left. I'll bet that if you take that cap off and look directly into the lens with a light reflecting off of it, you'll see fingerprints on it. That makes the whole thing look hazy, and I see it all the time on people's photos from their cell phones and even their SLRs. It just didn't have that pure clean look that I'll bet it's capable of. If you see it, let us know and we can expect a clearer picture if we keep our lenses clean. It shows up most in bright light.
    2) A cool trick I've used to check latency works like this...
    - Setup a cell phone running a stopwatch app with 1/100ths of a second on it. Set it on your desk and point the quad camera at it.
    - Get behind the goggles showing the live camera input (like you did when you were showing the menus), and videotape both the goggles output AND the stop watch screen at the same time.
    - At any time you wish, pause the recording camera and look at the two times. The difference between what's on the goggles screen and the stopwatch screen is your latency!
    Keep up the awesome work!
    John

      2) is a good trick to get a *rough* general idea of latency, but most phone screens will only update the every 16.7 (or even 25 / 33 / 50ms, to save power) - not every 1/100th or 1/1000th of a second. This means that the measured latency can vary and/or be off by quite a big margin...!
      My favorite low-tech way is to film an FPV monitor while switching a light on and off many times. Then check the footage for the _lowest_ number of frames it took for the monitor to reflect the light change. This will give you the latency at a single frame resolution. The accuracy of the phone stopwatch method will depend on both the camera's frame time *and* the phone's frame time.
      1) You are probably right!! But the lenses themselves can sometimes be pretty hazy too.. I noticed this on the Caddx Turtle; both the special lens and the 1.66m racer lens are significantly less clear than the Runcam Split M12 lens (which also fits the Turtle). Switching to the Runcam one was like wiping those fingerprints off!
      Cheers dude, nice comment :)

      I do clean the lens before I start, but I may have accidentally touched it.
      About 2yrs ago I did try to do latency test with a similar method. Most either disagreed with the methodology or didn't think it was worth doing for this or that reason.

    Looks nice, very natural image. Problem with latency is that our brain can easily adjust to it, for most people. So you may not feel it and be able to fly well, but when switching to a setup with far less latency, suddenly it feels twitchy, for instance. One crude way to test it is to point camera on a stopwatch, and record the image on goggles, as well as the stopwatch directly. The image on the goggles will shop an earlier time, due to the latency, Problem with this method is that you also measure latency of the goggles, so it's best for comparing, not for the absolute number. Using electronics like a scope will give more accurate info, but takes more effort.

    I got one of these last week and so far so good. What I like about Runcam is the QC, I know some people havent had good luck with them but I own 5 runcams from double stack originals to the nano and they all still work despite crashing them. I really wouldnt touch another Caddx product after turtles and a tarsier went bad. They do have quite good support though in my experience and I'm always getting sent replacement boards but it really shouldnt happen in the first place.

    I recently bought one of these and I also bought the Runcam Hybrid. Is it normal for the FPV feed to be really bad? I have Runcam Nano 2 cameras on all my other quads and the FPV feed looks pretty great, but the FPV feed on the Split 3 and the Hybrid just suck. I don't even enjoy flying with the HD cameras because the video in the goggles is so bad compared to the standard Nano 2. I was kind of surprised also that the Split 3 camera has a much smaller lens than the Nano 2.

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  3 года назад

      Yes, the single lens version across all brands the fpv view is poor. It is generally much better when there are two lenses and sensors, essentially we have one camera dedicated to HD recording and another for fpv.

      not to my knowledge. The audio is recorded to the sd card. There might be a way to make a hardware modification to accomplish your goal, but I don't know how we might do that.

    I got a turtle v2 a few months ago and when I did was gunna ask if there was an issue with latency cause it definitely felt to me like the video was running slightly slow, i noticed a difference the yesterday when I watched your review of what i think it was a LDARC HD 130mm but not 100% sure.The recorded hd footage always comes out fine but through the goggle feed it seems to slow down the image but I've also noticed the sticks only ever feel slightly behind the video feed. I honestly think these camreas just show a lower frame rate then normal through the goggles making it look slower and giving a slight feel of latency if that makes sense.
    Just out of curiosity I wonder if this camrea would work on the caddx board sense they use the same wiring harness.

    • @NickBurnsFPV
      @NickBurnsFPV  5 лет назад

      I am not sure if we can swap cameras and boards. I have seen where sd cards do make a difference in the "latency" of the stick feel. I have had the same spec cards feel different.

    Not sure if it was me that suggested about looking towards the garage to show the FOV and distortion, but it does sound like the sort of thing I mention in RUclips comments, as I like to barrel correct HD footage to make the lines look straight again.
    The Turbowing Cyclops 3 DVR has terrible analogue latency, and it outputs 30fps instead of the standard 60fps of an NTSC camera, which makes the latency look so much worse. When I use one I fly with a separate FPV camera.

    That was what I wondering, the difference when using HD cameras, the quality through the goggles. You're using OLED goggles, I'm not, I don't even have diversity but it's all in consideration. Not just to see everything & fly better but be safe with the environment & people. Coz people can be so dumb just plain stupid for the tecnology they don't know! I will always look stupid at people who ask me, "are you recording?" in my head is like, do you think you're so important to record? I'm flying like hell through the park, I see line of sights to fly, I don't really care what people are doing in the park, just trying NOT to hit them in the head with the drone..
    Great review! Which monitor is that? I'd like to have one to check the drone or when with friends to let them see what I'm seeing & flying.
