Sorry for this long comment, I just had a lot of thoughts on the topic: Its completely possible that this is because you start out by learning about RYB, but I find thinking in terms of those three more useful than CMY. Cyan and magenta are in my eyes at least so narrow bands of colour that its more difficult to break other colours down into those. I think its also possible that there are no primaries as technically if you go high enough in saturation (breaking what’s actually possible) you can mix any hue in any reasonable saturation since you just expand the gammut untill it covers what you need. For that reason I just stick to what feels natural since it seems to me ”true” primaries are just conceptual, even if cmy realistically gives you the most range.
