Keeps those bikes lubed and ready to ride. Because automobiles become to expensive to own an operate. It just depends on the economy. Ride on Everyone 🚴

The new road design is very unfridendly to bike in China.

I'm sorry that I keep having my mind blown by your documentaries. But I'm very into cycling, and I grew up in Shanghai, China for 18 years. I have observed everything in this documentary first hand. I have had the privilege to bike along side people that are a part of the new cycling culture. I only started seeing nicer bicycles like fixies and road bikes as of 2 years ago. Thanks for making this documentary.

+UrbanWanderer Thank you for your comments. It encourages me to keep making these shorts. I still haven't been to Shanghai but hope to visit. I really love the new cycling culture in China but wish that the car culture wasn't ruining cycling for those less fortunate.

Actually, if the rules were followed. China's bicycle infrastructure would be amazing. The only problem is that many of the lanes are actually TOO wide. They can are usually 1-2 cars wide, but then this means they just fill up with cars and it turns into another road lane basically. When I was cycling 80 miles a week for 2 1/2 months in BeiJing for just commuting to work, i had to fight some of the worst traffic and smog I had ever experienced in my life. I also died many times. I often stepped in front of cars to prevent them from cutting off old people and children crossing on the crosswalks. My girlfriend thought this was dumb because they have been known to just hit you anyways.
I myself got struck by cars TWICE. The first time, the guy was scared because I was a foreigner. He was driving in the bike lane and in the opposite direction. He seemed to be paranoid that as a foreigner, I would report him to the police as he turned into me and almost sucked me under his van.
The other time, it was a guy driving in the bike lane yet again. I biked by a scratched his car door. Within minutes, I was surrounded by a crowd of 30-40 chinese working class. I have good chinese and some of them were yelling in my favor, others in his. Older men came by and tried to calm the situation. Random people harassed me and said they were calling the police. In the end, after an hour or so. I paid the guy off $60. During this whole ordeal, he gave his keys to his friend to drive his car onto a legal road, so that if and when the police came, he could claim it happened somewhere where it'd be my fault. CRAZY STUFF.
When I bike in China, I fight for the road and often kick and arm bash cars to keep them from pulling over and crushing me against a fence. So many times I almost died, but I kept doing it because I simply loved cycling that much. It also got better after I started wearing exercise pollution masks.

+UrbanWanderer Wow, what an experience. I biked there but not as much so didn't experience such extreme behavior. This is what I mean by car culture taking over. You saw the images of guys taking photos of cars parked in the bike lanes. Beijing has been great about making sure lanes exist but not about making sure drivers respect the lanes. That same thing is happening in SF. And drivers are also getting more aggressive. We had about 2-3 years where things were great. Now we have to fight again for safer streets here.

think about how severe is the air pollution in northern China. You definitely don't want to ride in that.

Hairui Su Or sit in traffic, work outside or walk in that?

    • @zeekf.3839

+Hairui Su It's much healthier to ride that with a mask than sit in traffic without one, or with one with the windows down.
In other words, unless you're suffocating in a cage you're not any more safe.
