- For this underground mine exploring adventure we visit a remote mine in the rugged mountains of the desert southwest.
We traveled by Jeep to the wilderness boundary, past which you are not legally allowed to drive. We hiked across the desert to the mine site, which is quite large and spread out.
As we approached the site a couple cabins came into view. We checked out the first cabin, and surrounding area, where there is a 1930's era car complete with suicide doors that still work. We continued hiking up the mountain where we found another cabin. After checking out the second cabin we continued up the mountain to a mine working. At the working was another structure, which was possibly a shop at one time. After giving that area a good look we came down the mountain and started hiking up another canyon. There we found a fourth cabin. Above that cabin was another mine working where there was once a ball mill. The ball mill was driven by a four cylinder engine which is still there. There is also a generator, air compressor and other related items in this area. Inside the underground workings are several items including tools and a very nice shaft bucket. We also found a tram line and winch that was used to transport ore.

At 43:18, the stencil on the piece of wood, marked "TIMKEN' is an American bearing manufacturer. More than likely, the miners bought some parts to repair something, and the parts store gave them an empty wooden box that was once loaded with Timken bearings the store had ordered, to carry the parts home in. (the chances that the small scale mine ever needed a huge box of the same bearings is just not gonna happen) Later, the wood from the box was repurposed into the framing enclosure you guys found.

I watch and rewatch your videos and they bring back a lot of memories for me. I remember exploring old mines like these and finding stuff that i thought was really old then and now you re exploring these old abandon mines and finding a lot of the equipment that was brought back in when these mines were opened back up in the mid 1900's. Equipment that was all new technology when i was discovering the old equipment from the 1800's. Your videos bring back a lot of memories. Some bitter, but most are sweet memories. Your reply that someday it will be too hard for you to do as much as you do today. It was a very sad season for me when I admitted to myself that I wouldn't be able to make it next year and that this will be my last. Thank you for letting come along with you, if only in sprit, and relive some of those memories.

hi Tom and Julie that 1 bottle made by anchor hocking, i worked for anchor hocking 3 miles from my house its in connellsville ,pa they closed down in the 90's here, mostly made budweiser bottles and baby food jars very hot job. thanks for sharing

I used something similar to that tool when I was younger working for the Forest service fighting fires. They called it a Pulaski axe.

Nice find, that rail was made at Colorado fuel and iron now known as EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel here in Pueblo, Colorado!! I work in the rail mill and we make rail for all railroads in America!!!

I explored a few mines in Canada in the 50s, when I was a kid. There weren't a lot of hard rock mines where I lived, mostly placer mining. There never was a treasure trove of equipment left, like you are lucky enough to find.
The engine is a mid 60s English Ford engine, probably out of a Cortina. It has a cross flow head, so it is probably from 1965 to 1968. They are a great little engine, and it does not surprise me that someone was smart enough to use it as an industrial engine.

Tom, I've been in Lode Mining for over 40 years and I've always called Rock Ties "Bacon Strips" so who ever yelled at you was out of line. What you call a Grub Axe we Firefighters call a Pulaski. Thanks for another Fun Video

Hello Julie and Tom. Looks like I see Lucas on that starter motor of that engine. Must be a British engine. Then on the top of the air cleaner it said Made in Fram GT. Britain. I think that's what it said. That RCA Whirlpool I had not seen that before but I read they were around from late 50's to early 90's. I'd guess that was from the 60's. Love the old can opener. I've used something like that before. Anyways great video with like of nice finds.

Yes, saw the Lucas on the starter. Engine probably out of an MG at a guess from the air cleaner language.
Growing up in Chicago (I now live in the AZ desert) the story was that Jimmy Hoffa was dropped into an engine cleaning acid bath so I doubt you’ll find him in a refrigerator in the desert.
I wasn't really expecting to find him there. I always heard he was sealed in a barrel of acid and dumped in Lake Michigan. Who knows? Thanks for the comment!😬👍

In my area, I'm seeing a few wildflowers already which is really a little early for this time of year. If we continue to get some periodic rains over the next month it should be very good. I, probably like yourself, saw the Death Valley, "super bloom", of 2016.
I can remember standing on top of the crest of the Funeral Mountains near Chloride Cliffs about mid March of that year, looking down onto the floor of
Death Valley. It looked like the floor of the valley was a carpet of yellow, blue, red, white and purple colors. Quite a sight to behold.
I enjoy your episodes. I moved to Nevada in the mid 60s and enjoyed exploring the old Rawhide ghost town and the mine workings my dad would let us go in. The old Fairview mining area is now a naval bombing range. Keep up the good work and entertainment. Brings back old memories.

That was quite an adventure, thank you very much for sharing. And those desert flowers are sure beautiful . Just some information that I wanted to share with you guys about those little vinegar bottles you find around the mines, vinegar is great for cleaning of battery corrosion, especially after old batteries have been left in radios and flashlights. White vinegar is the best solution for cleaning up alkaline battery leakage. So my thought was maybe that’s why there was so many of those vinegar bottles lying around. Then again, maybe not. I really enjoyed looking at the old junk as well. Thanks so much again for sharing. Hope to see you guys again soon. Bye for now. 👌😎

Hi Tom & Julie, it was lovely to see those pretty wildflower's, was that an Ford that you saw, well the shell of it ???. That was pretty cool to see the old writing on that wall of the prices and dates of gold extracted. You're not alone Tom, I call those strips "Bacon" strips too lol, they look more like bacon though when they have been bolted on the back for a while. All of those wings you found, could it be a miners cat catching them and just eating the bodies ??.
The mine both inside and out had so much stuff lying around plus the cabins and stuff further down, definitely an interesting day out.

Hi Sue, I really don't know what the car was. The only guess I remember hearing was a Chrysler. I think the plates look like bacon strips, too. That's a good guess about a cat eating the insects. There were a lot of fairly big grasshoppers in the desert last fall and I'll bet it was a cat that was going out and catching them and bringing them back inside to eat. Some have said it was bats that were eating some winged insect, but I don't think so. In fact, now that I think about it, we saw a bunch of semi feral cats in Ridgecrest California when we stayed there. There were nine cats and six were kittens. We watched them as they would catch the grasshoppers and eat them. It was good entertainment. We also fed them dry cat food when we were there. Yes, lots of stuff laying around this one. This one is full of nice artifacts inside the mine and outdoors, the surprising thing is that you finding the fossilized remains of plant inside the mine in rock. I have seen them before in rock and gem shows in Arizona. I enjoy your shows so much and enjoy your explorations into different areas of the deserts. Nice when you find compressors still intact, the cabins also. I wish you both continued health and more safe travels, keep them coming! 😀

5:28 the car is a 1941 Plymouth Sedan Deluxe. 1930's were a lot more box like, not as rounded. Suicide doors were used up to the early 60s, How do I know its a 41 Plymouth, the tail lights are the giveaway, and I know a ton about cars.

"What bugs have wings that fall off? Ants and termites have similar lifecycles. They both lose their wings after mating..."
After learning that I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of insects that do that. I suppose it could have been a critter eating as well.

Tom, Julie, it's amazing to me how bare the mountains are in most of your videos. Yall know how mountains look in our desert in New Mexico, there's almost always at least some pinon and juniper, even down south in our harshest deserts. I drove through Nevada and southeastern California once, and was seriously amazed at the lack of trees, even on the highest hills and mountains. It seems you two spend a lot of time in the "real" deserts to my west.
The desert mountains are pretty bare as far as the number of sizable trees. There is a lot of life out there, though. Thanks for watching and commenting, Doug!👍😁

Your right that's the kind of work that pick axe was for. I've dug and uprooted enough shrubs for my parents as a kid. Towards the end i would chain it up to the back of my car and yank it. All using that exact tool. hard labor.
