    I think putting grease where it's dry might not be a great idea. Grease has a tendency to attract dirt, so any dirt that gets int here will end up like grinding paste, aluminium is soft and then it's a load of grooving into the sides.

    • @TraceVelo
      @TraceVelo  Год назад +59

      Yeah this is fair. I will say though, I put a touch of grease behind the caps as soon as I got them out of the box, and 1000 miles later they are still very clean. The end caps seal _relatively_ well anyway, so keep virtually all the dust and grit out. The grease is mainly just there to keep any water from seeping in behind the caps and sitting right next to the bearing seals for extended periods.

    • @PeakTorque
      @PeakTorque Год назад +31

      I hear ya. But there's no Alu to wear there on the front end caps. The end caps and axle are co rotating. These hubs have ZERO labyrinth seal, oring, or lip seal. So on balance a bit of grease is better than water going straight into the bearing.

    • @gavroagogo
      @gavroagogo Год назад +15

      Hambini clearly never has to try and remove end caps that haven't had any grease. He doesn't work in a bike shop, dealing with customer bikes that have been put away in a cold damp shed after a four hour ride, every 3 days for 5 months of salted british roads. I haven't watched all his videos, but I haven't seen one where he needs to try and get a hub apart after that sort of abuse

    Thanks for guiding us through the maze of inexpensive Chinese brand wheels. I hang around with some serious cyclists who kind of automatically scoff when you mention off brand parts that cost about 1/3 or even 1/4 of prestige name brands. I'm happy to let them support the big name brands by paying premium prices. I'm thrilled with my recent purchase of Ryet wheels. They are very nicely made and finished, perfectly true, and roll and roll and roll.

I would like to try some Siroko kit but I don't fancy having to pay the postage to send it back if it says large in the size guide but fits like a small. If you're shy about revealing your body sizing then a simple "the size guide is accurate" or " get a size one / two sizes bigger than what the size guide suggests for a tight / casual fit". pre-stressing is esp. important for j-hook spokes as the ends may be slightly bent but not deformed to the hole, so they may be under additional strain leading to a fatigue failure. As you say, more just about seating for straight pull and carbon fiber spokes.

    • @TraceVelo
      @TraceVelo  Год назад +4

      Yeah absolutely. I have had some wheels in the past where it was clearly not properly de-stressed at the factory, and after 200 miles or so, some of the spokes were at WILDLY different tensions. The brake calipers which you had installed on this bike are not flat mount but post mount. The various adapters that seem to come with the kit are to adapt PM to PM for different size rotors. I got me a set of Orome Valar TH50D recently and they have been amazing so far. The only thing im not the biggest fan of are the decals. But the reason i did choose them was the combination of the dt-swiss style hub, lightweight steel spokes and the internal width of 22mm (actually 23mm on my set) and external of almost 30mm. This combination makes running 32mm tires amazing (on tpu tubes, not tubeless since i had a brand new pair of normal gp 5000 laying around). Probably the best Upgrade possible for the conditions im usally riding in (very rough roads from time to time). Previous to them i had major vibrations with the 23mm tires, the 32mm on those rims just floats over everything. Best upgrade so far.

I'm a massive skeptic too, so understand you might not trust things at face value, which tbh is a good thing with a lot of stuff you see online. What I will say however is that 1000 miles doesn't lie. After sticking a bit of grease behind the caps, I never touched the wheels, and ran them in all weathers. It's fathomable they could have sent me a wheelset they spent extra time prepping, but for them to be that well balanced after 1000 miles riding on curmmy english B-roads, I think it shows the overall quality.

    🥖🥖🥖🥖🥖 Hi Luke.. Just love how you present and test equipment.
    I could not help notice how much the bike started to wobbel during "sound test". It seems like wheels are not counter weighted for the valves. This is normally not an issue when riding flat road, but on long decentents (Mountain and Big hills) this can make the bike feeling unstable or worse microvibrate the bike into resonance.
    Can you confirm factory is counterweighting the wheels?

    • @TraceVelo
      @TraceVelo  Год назад +3

      Hey Mikkel, yeah good observation! So this is probably a result of the tubeless sealant. The bike was sat like that in the stand for a couple of hours before the sound test, so the sealant would have pooled at the bottom of the tyre. Spinning it up abrubtly doesnt really give the sealant enough time to evenly coat the inside of the tyre, hence the wobbling. Wether they counterweight the wheels, I have no idea. However I would probably suspect not.

    What are these like for tubeless tyre compatibility? I've been frustrated with limited choice and difficulty of seating tubeless tyres to OEM Giant SLR hookless rims. They've proved almost impossible to get tyres seated properly (running round) if you need to do do a roadside repair, such as fitting a tube. Hence I'm tempted to find some hooked, tubeless compatible rims if this opens up greater tyre choice, easier set-up, and less troublesome road-side repairs.

Winspace approached every independent RUclipsr, one would think that your channel would be on top of their list.
    Anyway cheers and keep up the great work.

    Does the freehub itself look like it is swappable with a dt swiss one? Does the freehub have one of those little steel inserts to reduce the cassette digging into the body ?

    • @TraceVelo
      @TraceVelo  Год назад

      So I swapped out the star ratchet in these for the set from my DT swiss hubs, and it seemed to work fine. As for the steel insert in the cassette body, it doesnt have it. But TBH as long as you tighten down the cassette to the suggested 40nm (which is super tight), you dont really need the anti-bite guard in my experience.

    🥖🥖🥖🥖Another great video Luke! Long time fan, first time commenter here. Just wondered if you noticed how similar the hubs are to the Elite Drive hubs? Same hub anodised black? Both designed in house... The axle certainly looked a lot better than the Elite one though. I have the Drive 40D and 50D wheels, but unfortunately ordered before the front hub modification. They supplied oversize bearings as a temporary solution, but now the bearing seat has worn, they are loose. I have just reached out to Elite to see if I can get new front hubs.🥖🥖🥖🥖

    • @TraceVelo
      @TraceVelo  Год назад

      Ahh interesting. So after checking my Elite 50D wheels, the hubs are def not the same. They use the same number of spokes, but that's where the similarities end. That's annoying about the EliteWheels tho, def let me know the outcome.They claim to have a warranty, and this is DEFINITELY a manufacturing defect, so if they dont help you out, that's a bit shitty. So they sent you an oversize bearing, and even after fitting that, it's still loose??

    • @neilmcgurk2227
      @neilmcgurk2227 Год назад

      @@TraceVelo @Trace Velo The o/s bearing was fitted before using the wheels and it worked for a few thousand km, but the bearing became loose again due to wear. Elite wheels have agreed to supply 2 hubs at cost ($40 each, plus shipping $30)

    • @TraceVelo
      @TraceVelo  Год назад

      @@neilmcgurk2227 That's not really acceptable, you should definitely argue with them. I had a look, and their warranty is for 3 years, plus I checked the wording for what is covered:
      *The warranty covers wheels, spokes, nipples, and hubs. The limited warranty only covers issues caused by non-external factors during the warranty period. We offer replacement in case of defects in materials or workmanship.*
      The hubs are defective, and you paid good money for those wheels. They should provide replacements at no cost to you. Take some screenshots of their policy, and include them in the email you send to them. Let me know what they say, and email me if it's easier: tracevelouk@gmail.com
      And this is their warranty info page: www.elite-wheels.com/warranty-policy/

    • @TraceVelo
      @TraceVelo  Год назад

      Actually just checked their wording again:
      *If any manufacturing defect is noticed within 30 days of the product being received, Elitewheels is obligated to replace the rim, hub, spoke, or spoke nipple in question as well as pay any shipping costs. If any manufacturing defect occurs after 30 days and up to 3 years after the delivery date, Elitewheels is obligated to replace the rim, hub(except for the bearings), spokes, or spoke nipple. After the 30 day period, the customer is responsible for the shipping costs.*
      So looks like you might need to pay for shipping unfortunately.

    • @TraceVelo

      Yeah so it seems like a knockoff of the parktool tm-1. The one I'm using here is from ZTTO, I think it cost me about £13. It's difficult to calculate the actual tension in kilogram-force (kgF), but it shows the relative tension of the spokes, which is more than enough to keep the wheel balanced, or check it over.
