Go Nagai was heavily influenced by Osamu Tezuka as well! I actually initially remembered Devilman was a Tezuka manga when I saw this comment lol.

Is it just me or is Johan kind of a bland character with zero writing? Like people glorify this guy as peak writing, but imo its pretty ez to write a character with no personality instead of someone like Musashi who has a lot of depth to him

Thats the thing with johan, he has so little screentime yet the whole story is about him, with all the different twists and murders he did becoming kinda who he is, you dont get much from him because thats who he is, not letting anyone get closer to him but we get enough to be able to know what led him to be that way and understand his character

Nah I sort of agree, yes Johan doesn't truly has a personality that makes him much of a character but he is still a great villian in Monster. He didn't need to be anything more,I think

We see people's personalities rather than their actions. Their actions are what defines who they are, not what they front up for you to see.
Idk if you meant it but Johan having "no personality" is not a negative trait here, especially when you put into account how deceptive he is. Him seemingly having "no personality" is very very in character.
Edit: Keep in mind we are in the monster's perspective in MW, so we see him.
We aren't in the monster's perspective in Monster, we only see his actions.

He's a blank slate yes, but that's what makes him so dangerous, can't really predict someone you know nothing about

I wanted to order this manga a little while back, but the amazon reviews said it was flipped like a regular left-right book. Kind of disappointing, but i think ill buy it now. Sounds so good
