- Today I'll be showing you how to dial numbers to make a call on a rotary phone. These vintage retro telephones are pretty cool with their spinning dial wheels, and it might be good to know how they work incase you ever get sent through a time warp and wake up next to one of these phones.
Check out some more videos about old retro technology here: • Retro Things
Did you make it back?

So...is anyone else here because they didn't know how to use the phone in That’s not my Neighbor?

😭😭😭
Yes 💀
Hhahahahahaha yeah!
Me lol
Okay this is actually useful since my braindead self always have been wondering how this works. Thanks :)
Happy to help!
After you pick up the handset you have to listen for a dial tone (humming noise) before you can dial.
This was helpful needed this to play the third room game
In the 1960s our phone number had 2 letters followed by 5 numbers. How would we use the rotary phone to dial a phone number like that?
The numbers on the phone's wheel (or keypad) will have letters next to them, in the following order:
2 ABC
3 DEF
4 GHI
5 JKL
6 MNO
7 P[Q]RS
8 TUV
9 WXY[Z]
You don't dial a "letter", you dial the number on the button or hole in the wheel where the "letters" are located. For example, to get a number such as [G][E]neral 9-7720, you dial 439-7720. To dial [M][A]ine 2-9980, it's 622-9980.
Need a playlist of those easy listening guitar licks.
Lol now I feel old. I cut my teeth on these. Plus when I first used one you picked it up to see if you had a dail tone or if someone was talking. There was a party line at the time ment that a handful of people were using the same phone line. Usally you didn't know the other people.

what's the device you used to mark the white rectangle after using the old phone?

That, was a pencil. They still make them today. They are most commonly wooden tubes with a thin tube of graphite embedded in them. To use them to write it must be shaved down to allow the graphite inside to be visible and able to touch the paper. The act of shaving it down to be usable is called "sharpening" it. Pencils are great.
How do you get it to work?
WOW!
Can we use this to call an iPhone?
Yes.
Even my parents got one of those.
شكرا
YES
Unfortunately, this vid was unhelpful. The problem that I have is that the dial tone comes right back after each digit that I dial. There is a trick to dial the # sign, which on these old rotaries is a double tap on the hang up, which hasn’t worked on my phone. Another tip is to dial 0 four times, and that hasn’t worked either. I can receive calls, although there is not enough voltage to make my phone ring, it just clicks. Does anyone have any tips for dialing out? Mine is an old Italian model made of marble and gold-plated filagree.
Need to know info!!
