  • Though now long gone, Oldsmobile was America’s oldest carmaker and its Cutlass was America’s best-selling passenger car for many years. This ’75 Cutlass Supreme offers up some very odd relics as Steve plays “What’s In The Box?” Handcuffs? Yes…handcuffs.

      @@billycarpenter4740 Yep, I can imagine it sounded great. Miss that era. To me, cars were so much more comfy than the cramped up stuff we drive today. Back then, people had the ability to CHOOSE what options they desired on their cars. Today, we are FORCED to buy and pay for technology that we may or may not even want. The stupid infotainment systems, the stupid huge screens stuck in the middle of the instrument panels. Lane Departure Warning??? Are you kidding me? If a driver has a problem keeping their vehicle in their own lane, they don't need to be driving in the first place. The list goes on and on of crap that if 'optioned out', would drastically lower the cost of a new car.

      @@santaclause2875 I agree with you. Back in the day an "upgrade" was an automatic transmission or electric windows. Seems to me the modern consumer is convenced that they actually need "decor packages" and all those convenience items to make their driving a more pleasurable and safer experience" while giving away their hard earned dollars for these non-necessities. it's mostly a sales plot to get consumers to buy fun things, and gain the bragging rights,... just gotta get the consumers to part with those earned dollars tho ! I still drive my original owner 2004 JEEP Grand Cherokee Laredo as I bought it cash back then, it's got a basic package upgrade and serves my needs. As this next generation of consumers is "softer" they believe they need things "done for them" rather than using some of their own effort. Back in the 1960's you could just pick individual upgrades for you new vehicle (8 track player, sport wheels, tinted windshields, different sized engines), then the auto makers grouped up decor items or performance items and you had to buy the entire "package" if you just wanted 1 or 2 upgraded items. Yep, sellers outsmarted buyers AGAIN ! 'cha gotta learn to smart with yer money folks !

      @@billycarpenter4740 I hear ya!!! Yep, HANG ON to that Jeep!! Great vehicles, and will run forever if you maintain them right, and I'm sure you are. Yes, the stuff going on today with NO CHOICE in what we want in our vehicles is absolutely linked to a much higher profit margin per vehicle by the manufacturers when they load them down with all that crap we actually do not need. Another issue, also, is too much government overreach mandating all these new safety items we are forced to pay for. Air bags and safety belts...probably a pretty good idea. Adaptive cruise control? Automatic parallel parking? Sheeesh, if a person can not back their car into a tight space without crashing....maybe they don't deserve a drivers license. Automatic braking???? Seriously??? Sounds like a system designed to encourage FIDDLING WITH A SMART PHONE instead of devoting one's FULL TIME ATTENTION to the road ahead. Okay, I'll climb down off my soap box now! Have a good day, Billy!!

      @@santaclause2875 Back in the 1970-1980's it was considered "ghetto cool" to have a real set of handcuffs hanging down from your rearview mirror. My Jeep is a 4 door Grand Cherokee, seemed high-tec when I bought it but after all theses years owning it (19) I'm able to diagnose and make most any repairs. My girlfriend has her original owner 2004 Honda Accord, it just passed 375,000 miles. She is easy on cars so hers looks like a 5 year old vehicle. Still has the original drivetrain and interior, no leaks or smoking . As you can tell I've been around for awhile ( just turned 64), so each newer generation of people want more luxuries out of life and less hard work to earn it. When I was growing up few had electric garage door openers, we all knew how to change a flat tire, and we owned and drove junk cars so we could afford other life necessities. Even now I appreciate seeing a survivor/restored old car/truck with just the basics and the joy of having a unique vehicle. Back in my time we carried dimes and quarters in our pockets in case we broke down and needed to find a public pay-phone to call for help. As you may know, modern truck drivers (18 wheelers) no longer carry spare tires for their tractor or trailer. In the past too many drivers were getting hurt changing a tire or getting hit alongside the highways. So now with cell phones, you get a flat ?, you call out a service truck to change out your flat for you. Things have changed.. The monolith style converter used on these cars was very restrictive. I can remember hearing stories of the small pellets being emitted from the tailpipe when there was malfunction.

Doraville, GA closed in 2008, Arlington, TX still operates today and assembles trucks and SUVs, Framingham, MA closed in 1989 and Lansing closed in 2006 with today's Lansing Grand River plant "assuming" the duties of the former Lansing, MI "home" Oldsmobile plant.

    The catalytic converter didn't reheat the exhaust - the exothermic chemical reaction between the exhaust gasses and the coating on the converter pellets produced the heat. The emissions reduction was due to the reaction, not the heat.

      I had a similar experience at my local Acura dealer years ago. I told the service rep that I write the date and mileage on my filters when I change them and the one they showed me didn't have it. "Oh".... was the answer I got and she walked away to another unsuspecting customer. I always thought she and a tech were in on that scam. They had some turnover years later and seem to have gotten more reputable staff.

      They tried to get my coworker with the cabin air filter scam. I think he fell for it once, and then told me his was due to be done. I showed him what to buy on Amazon and then we went out to his car before lunch and I had it done in five minutes, barely getting my hands dirty. As we came back into the office to wash up and have lunch, he said, "The dealer wanted $150 to do that". I said, "Man, I'm in the wrong business."
      Another time, I took a friend for cancer treatment at an outpatient facility and I changed her cabin filter while waiting for her to come out. She was quite sick from the treatment (fortunately, she's been cancer free for a few years now) and said, "How did you do?" I said, "All good. You couldn't have been in the procedure room and I had it done....".

      When my Sonic was in for warranty work they told me it needed plugs. I said that they could change them for free because they were 100k replacements and the car had a lot less miles. The zone rep who was and still is a dope said smugly that those are maintenance items. It is then that I asked if he read the warranty booklet as I had where it clearly stated the plugs were covered by the emissions warranty. That is when he agreed with his tail between his legs. I then told him that if they got cute and said they changed them and did not that I would run the date codes on the old ones by NGK who made them for GM. If they came back as not in line with the cars build date I would run them up and down the flagpole seven ways to Sunday with fraud.

      @@LongIslandMopars Years back my friend called the Chrysler dealer for a fuel pump for his 1991 Shadow. They quoted him $300. I told him to come with me. I had the parts store pull out the Airtex pump unit off the shelf. As I worked for an auto parts manufacturer at the time I knew Walbro supplied the OEM pump. Walah, the Airtex pump unit was a reboxed Walbro (now TI Automotive) so we got it and installed it at my house. The car had 100k at the time and when my friend donated the car with over 200k on it that pump was still operating fine.

    I owned a 71 Cutlass Supreme back in high school (84/85). It had a blown 350 when I got it and I put in a 350 out of a 74 full size Olds I bought from the junkyard. I pulled the EGR intake and replaced it with the intake and carb from the 71 engine. It was so carboned up that you couldn't even see the cam and lifters. My dad told me to chip it out with a hammer and chisel and clean it with Gunk. I also pulled the valve covers and cleaned around the rockers and valve springs. It was really horrible. Needless to say I didn't expect much. Boy was I wrong. That engine ran great. It would light up the right rear tire in 2 gears and on a trip from the Kansas City area to Ft. Worth to visit my grandma one summer it knocked down a solid 19 mpg with the A/C running the entire time. I was pretty hard on that old car but I was a teenager. Towards the end of high school I sold it to my sister and brother in law. My brother in law was even harder on it than I was. It continued to run great and to get exceptional fuel economy for a carbureted mid sized car with A/C. One day my sister was driving it and someone ran a stop sign and T-boned her. She wasn't hurt but the Cutlass was totaled. My brother in law sold it, still running, to someone needing an engine for their Cutlass. I wonder if the engine still survives? That was probably 1988 or so. Anyway, great memories from a great car. I owned a 78 Cutlass years later and I replaced the anemic 260 with a 72 350 plucked from a wrecked Cutlass. It was quite a sleeper.

    There's no block-off plate under the vinyl top of a Supreme to create the small side window. The roof of the base Cutlass S is a different stamping than the Supreme. Vinyl delete cars will show a solid roof with no plate. The Supreme rear window is more upright and formal and has a vertical fold down the center, but the S is lower and has no fold like a fastback. I had a '77 Supreme in high school.

    Still a lot of controversy over GM killing Oldsmobile over the lower volume Buick but then they were looking at the chinese export market more than the domestic. I think there was some government input on that one.

    • @mikee2923
      @mikee2923 Год назад +1

      Actually the Chinese market was the excuse given for dropping the axe on Pontiac. When GM axed Olds, it was the mid market nameplate of their lineup. I guess they felt it would be the logical choice to axe. By that point in time, (or really since the 70s) there really wasn’t a dime’s bit of difference between the divisions of GM anyway. They had no use for the innovation developing division since Cadillac had already took the Aurora V8 and turned it into the Northstar V8. When you think about it, what has GM actually done in recent memory other than hang on and avoid collapse?

    You mentioned the rollover standard a few times in this video. Fun fact. Rollover standards were supposed to be upped in 1972 or 1973. The Fiat x1/9 was just in development, so it was built around the new standard. When it came time for the new standard to go in effect, the Fiat x1/9, was the only car in the world that passed the standard. The new standard was cancelled, and rewritten to a lower standard, until the rest of the automaker's could raise their rollover capabilities.
