If you don't know where you are if you know the stars you can roughly work out your latitude assuming it's clear but with longitude you won't stand a chance of figuring it out.
From 17:30 to 17:53 The scene of the Statue of Liberty, followed by the Lower Manhattan Financial District with the WTC towers piercing the skyline and then a plane landing. This was 1994.
GPS put around the world in geostationary orbits? No the satellites orbit lower in a constellation of 24 active units in 6 MEO planes. In other words the satellites move in and out of the receiver field of view.
