I don't think Obie could've ever been huge huge. Don't get me wrong, very dope rapper, but if that's all it took then there'd be millions of famous rappers Eminem always gravitated towards guys that complimented HIS sound and style, which was smart. D12 for obvious reasons but then also guys like Obie, Stat Quo and Cashis, Bobby Creekwater. These guys all struck me as talented guys that would never make it as a world class act but who's skills and style meshed with Em's well. It was the perfect situation for all the guys he signed.
Idk, I think part of it is shady records track record with talent isn't all that great. Besides 50, they seem to drop the ball with every good artist they get. I think that probably held a lot of those guys back. I mean, shady had yelawolf, all of slaughterhouse, griselda... all of whom have had successful careers (slaughterhouse as solo artists but not as a group) but were super slept on when they were signed to shady records and not very well promoted or put much into pushing their careers forward. Ems my fave rapper and I like him, but it's honestly sad how much talent his label gets and then do next to nothing with. I think if a lot of those guys signed with a different major label they would've had bigger careers. Shady records doesn't seem to have the best reputation when it comes to helping artists on the label out or pushing their careers forward generally.
