To clarify a couple things, the stalling issue was something I had not experienced but others also commented on. I raised the idle a couple clicks and it was much more forgiving after. The traction is tricky. We have a high clay content soil that is an extremely hard base when it’s dry. A light rain can make it greasy where it is smooth and in dry dusty conditions it sometimes feels like sand over asphalt. The tires are Motoz tractionator I.T. With an over wide rear. With a bike that light and torquey you are going to reach a point where it either spins or stands up over half throttle on any surface. The margin for error is pretty small. They make the fe/exc in a 350 which is a less torquey, higher rpm motor that seems like the sweet spot in the line for single track or lighter riders. ……. We may have one soon 🤔
When you raised the idle, did the stalling go away completely or was it just less bad? I know this is a major issue on the 350 huskys, is this common on the 501 as well?
@@Dave-cl5no Yeah, the factory idle setting is just too low. You don’t have to make it ridiculous but the motor will quit stalling altogether. I just bumped it up till it quit and never had a problem till the shop turned it back down 🙄 I’m guessing that if you open up the exhaust and intake so it runs as intended it will probably not be an issue. My 690 is almost a different bike with pipe, tune and intake. Particularly off the bottom.
Just seen your Video for the first time. Yeah, Bought a 2016 Husqvarna 501 S Brand new and have made some Mods... Raised the Handle Bar, added an EVO Stock KTM/SUZUKI bend, Scott steering Stabilizer, fooled around with Chain & Sprockets... settled on 13/50 sprockets, added a Flywheel weight...to deal with my flame out in tight stuff, and now in 2023..(Drum roll).... I had my Dealer Shop lower the bike 1", Fork and rear Shock...... It all works Quite well and with the High Grade Fuel I run She is quite impressive.
The 501 has expert potential, but it’s a smooth 4 stroke and forgiving. I have a 2021 FE501S, after many years without a dirt bike. I sold my last dirt bike in the early 90’s, an XR500. It was easy getting reacquainted with that beautiful torque and power in the dirt. I was a bad dad and never got my kids dirt bikes growing up. My 22 year old who’s 6’-6” learned how to ride on my 501. If it was a 2 stroke, I would not have let him near it. He’s been respectful of the power so hasn’t got himself into trouble learning, but it intimidates him. I’m either going to get him a CRF300L or a Husky FE350S so we can ride together. My 501 flamed out constantly in the beginning. I raised the idle to 1300 and that made it better, but when I did the triple upgrade (exhaust-euro intake-ECU) it never flamed out again, and it’s tame, until you hit the throttle and it’s just a beast if you let it be. Stock, the FE501S is afflicted with Asthma. The poor guy can’t breath. Now it’s like Lance Armstrong on steroids.
Really? Cause I can't decide between a 2022 CRF450L or FE501. I've been hearing the crf is underwhelming out the factory, requires upgrades for power and has flameouts. The FE501 HAS FLAMEOUTS TOO!? I need to make a decision.
@@njinvision5463 IMHO, the 450 is overpriced. It’s priced to compete with the 500EXC-F and the FE501S. For an extra $2,000 it’s an easy decision. Now the CRF300L and the 350 Husky&KTM, Honda has it priced right. That’s a tougher decision. The Flameouts occur because of what they had to do to make it smog compliant. They run very lean. They are easy tweaks to cure.
@@njinvision5463 I like Honda bikes. Had a few. But, the weight penalty is real. Just did my first ride on my new to me 2021 FE501S. I could not stop with the hoots and woops of joy. I bought one with only 484 miles, but a good helping of mods to unleash it. Coming from a WR250R, this is a revelation, and it's not even set up for me yet. Not sure if a stock bike is as good, but no problems with stalls. But seriously, the extra weight and higher center of gravity makes a huge difference. This thing is epic.
I wear my brown pants when I ride Matts 501 in the dirt. That thing is a rocket ship compared to my WR250R. That 501 requires a steady surgeon hand compared to my sloppy WRR. I don't think I ever got above half throttle on that thing in the dirt, too scared. Too much throttle will either loop it, or light up the rear.
I had a WR250R, loved it. Just finished my first ride on my new to me 2021 FE501S. What a massive difference, and that extra 60 pounds is real. I had to keep reminding myself that I was going fast, and could easily end up over a cliff if not careful. I barely tapped the full potential, and it had me laughing and yelling out loud the whole time with joy. Tomorrow, there will be more...
I'm looking for my first bike, there's a 2016 Husqvarna FE501 down the street w 3200 miles for $6600. I'm 6'2 205 lbs. Would you think it's too much for me just going into it? Just want to tool around the deserts and mountains of northern Utah. Anyone?
@@davidsimmons3844 Ha, well I did get one. Yeah first bike never really rode previously. I probably should had purchased a 250 or something. It's alright though, been cruising the mountain fire roads and running drills. No problems yet. Just have to be mindful of that throttle.
@distilledfreedom1840 there great on the fire roads! If you haven't had any off road technique training get some will help alot! Have fun! But not to much!👍 yah watch the whiskey throttle in the technical single tracks! 🤪
