    I had a chance to play her in the George Bernard Shaw version of St. Joan in a small off Broadway theater. I treasure that experience, and her example of being true to self, no matter how hard the world can be.

    A few years ago, while visiting a sister-in-law, who lived in Los Angeles---the oldest side of LA---she told me her neighbor had just passed, and that they were selling away everything in the house she left behind. I went there for the books, and surely enough I found an original copy of St. Joan's trial, word for word.
    It is a remarkable testimony of faith and spirituality in general. When St.Joan speaks, you come to the realization that God was, indeed, on her side.
    True, in the bitter end she loses her life.
    But her legacy is to be admired.

      @Christina Reynolds the catholic church wanted her dead because while England was ruling that area (they were when Joan was burned) the Church worked in concert with the King. It was basically a political hit job. She was made an example of. 20 years later the british had been driven out, and the church there didn't have british influence. That's when they had her rehabilitation trial to clear her name. They called many of the same witnesses. The minutes of both trials can be read today. Mark Twain read them to write his book about Joan.
      The Catholic Church blew with the political winds in that day.
      They made her a Saint 500 years later.

      What happened to the Jean Seberg here playing her was also horrible and cruel.
      She financially supported the Black Panthers in the 70s. Hoover and the FBI didn’t like that and planted a false story on the media that she was pregnant with a Black Panthers leaders baby. She read the story and the shock made her go into labor early and her baby died prematurely.
      She tried killing herself every anniversary of the baby’s death. And she died young at 40. Supposedly by suicide but it was under mysterious circumstances and her bf might’ve played a role in her death.

    Unlike what many claim, Saint Joan of Arc has been cleared from all accusations in a second trial very soon after her death. This tells a lot about the ability of the Catholic Church to reconsider its positions and its thirst for truth in a time of violence, injustice and war.
    She has been seen as a saint by many even before her martyrdom and for the generations to come and she is now one of the most famous persons in human history as well as among the Saints.

    • @WilliamRing45
      @WilliamRing45 3 года назад +2

      The church didn't "reconsider" its position. The first court was under Englush control, the second by the French. Both groups if predates used her as political expediency dictated. She was just a pawn in a larger game. Even in less fraught times, anyone who claimed to be hearing saints' voices was In danger for coopting the church's spiritual monopoly unless they themselves were of use. St. Francis also tread on dangerously thin spiritual ice in his time.

    • @FREEMAN....
      @FREEMAN.... 3 года назад +3

      @@WilliamRing45 You're right, there was a political context and there were diverging interests, but religious positions were much more important for the populations and people feared God more than they feared the lords regardless of their camp. When it went to theology, the Church was not bowing to temporal authorities, just like today.
      In the case of St Joan of Arc, the Church did reconsider. No matter the rulers, the Church had/has its own principles and canonical laws and they were and still are not based on local circumstances if it has to make a decision on such an important issue as supernatural events .
      Talking about "monopoly" is wrong. This has never been the reason why the Church was reluctant (and still is) when people (including clerics) say they hear heavenly voices and have a message to deliver. It is because it takes it very seriously and fears frauds and errors that would lead to heresies, misconceptions and false beliefs.
      Keep in mind even St Bernadette of Lourdes faced incredulity before being trusted. Because the Church wants no room left for superstitions and delusions.
      Here is what Wikipedia states :
      "The conviction of Joan of Arc in 1431 was
      posthumously investigated on appeal in the 1450s by Inquisitor-General Jean Bréhal, at the request of Joan's surviving family (her mother Isabelle Romée and two of her brothers, Jean and Pierre). The appeal was authorized by Pope Callixtus III.
      The purpose of the retrial was to investigate whether the trial of condemnation and its verdict had been handled justly and according to ecclesiastical law."

    This scene is mostly consistent with the consensus among historians, although there are some minor errors and some of it is going to be misleading without the context explained. English government records and eyewitness accounts show that the tribunal was delegated by the English government to convict her on what the eyewitnesses said were deliberately false charges. The judge, Pierre Cauchon, had served as an advisor for the English occupation government for over a decade before the trial, and many of the other tribunal members later accused him of corrupting the trial and falsifying the transcript on important points. The movie doesn't explain this clearly, made worse by the fact that so much of the script is based on what the transcript claims. On another topic, the reason Joan's hair looks shaved is because the tribunal had it shaved off as was the common practice before execution.

Didn’t hear Joan of Arc speak out against all the annexation of Brittany did we? In the 80's, the TV program "Ripley, believe or not" aired an episode where the host actor Jack Palance read a book in a library in France that claims Joan never was burned and executed as the official history goes, instead she received a payment in gold - if I remember well - from The Dolphin por services given to France. According to this, the execution was not public with only a handful of witnesses, the victim used a hood so nobody saw her face. There is also the rumor that Joan was somehow related to the french royal family ( ...a sister perhaps?) and that´s the reason the king granted her an army. Does anybody has any ideas?

    Her murderers made her one of their "saints," 500 years later without her consent - then they profit off her for the rest of eternity. They've done that with their victims for centuries. It's soooo f-ing twisted. Who are the real witches? They sure dress and act like it.

      @@FREEMAN.... I don't need a map to find it, having been there. So why do you think she was canonized when she was? Why did they wait almost 500 years? The circumstances being what they were in France at the beginning of the 20th century had everything to do with it. And yes she was Christian, but of course had no love for those about to have her killed. The church tried to wash their hands of it like they do with everything including the rape of hundreds of thousands of kids at least over centuries and the cover ups. She wasn't stupid. She knew what was happening to her and who was ultimately responsible. For instance the pope could have saved her, he could have stopped it. Just like that. But he chose not to because she was too big a threat even to him - this teenage country girl favoured by God.
