Argentina time! P.S.: What you drank it's what we call Mate Cocido. If you let it boil with the herbs it's more intense than the common Mate. The water in common Mate doesn't stay that much time with the herbs, so it's different intensity taste.

Yerba mate is fantastic. Got me through college, and later in life got me through transitioning to working the night shift. Also, typically you use *a lot* more of the leaves to brew it, and infuse multiple times. One of my coworkers drank my mate at my night job. After about 30 minutes he exclaimed "this stuff is rocket fuel!"
I've been drinking Matè for several years as an alternative to coffee. I've since become obsessed with learning more about it. As an Australian, it's not too common. Although, i'm able to order it online from an established reseller, Yerba Matè Australia. There isn't a great amount of videos about Matè like yours. Keep up the good work! I love it man. :)
@@yamilcoloma6677 I've had the tea bags too! Cruz de Malta brand. The most common brand here is Rosemontè, but my favorite has to be Taragui and Anna Park. :) It'd be cool to get some fresh leaves though.

Here in Rio (Brazil) we have this very famous erva mate tea brand named "Matte Leão", which is the leaves deeply roasted and grounded. We usually drink it as an iced tea since the weather is generally very hot. I love it and drink it every other day, mixed with lime juice is so refreshing! In the southern states, Argentina and Uruguay (as pointed out by others) the dried and lightly roasted leaves are very popular as a hot water infusion named "Chimarrão", but other parts of Brazil and Paraguay also have a cold water infusion named "Tererê".
If you read a comment made by an argentine in this video, pay them no mind. Families have been torn asunder and civil wars fought over how to drink mate, so if you're a foreigner, just have it like you enjoy it most. And this is coming from an argentine, too, so you know i'm ALWAYS RIGHT.

I discovered this stuff selling on American shelves in ~2018 (canned stuff) It gives me a less jittery energy hit than conventional energy drinks and isnt nearly as acidic. 10/10 i love the stuff
Some notes: In Brazil we have the "mate tostado", that has a distinctive caramel flavour and colour. Usually drinked hot, or cold with lime juice. There is "mate verde para chimarrão", similar the one used in Uruguay and Argentina. The leaves are quickly fire-roasted. It's made with boling water, and can be more or less bitter (young or old leaves), usually drink inside a "cuia" - dried oval calabash fruit. And we have the "mate verde", an unfermented and unroasted young green leaves, and it's mate like tisana, just adding wather (sometimes with lemon) and let ambient-temperature to infuse. This drink is called in Brazil as "tereré", and has a very distinctive fruit-floral flavour, and I think is very refreshing.
I love the ilex genus of plants. The holly genus. I have foraged Ilex Vomitoria (Yaupon) and have tried everything in my power to get ahold of Ilex Guayusa cuttings. Ilex guayusa is my favorite plant. It has all the benefits of containing the Xanthines we love as seen in Ilex Paraguariensis or Yerba Mate but with the added benefit of containing the amino acid derived l-theanine. I love it because it makes no sense to be one of only two plant species in the world to contain l-theanine, but it just has it. Unrelated to green tea completely, and none of its family has any theanine that we know of, yet this single plant does. I love Yaupon because it's North America's indigenous caffeinated plant, they grow back home, I take cuttings and seeds every time I go there. I like the hollies more than tea because you can abuse them a little bit with temperature and boiling times without them becoming tannic and astringent like with tea plant tea.

Hi, I'm Argentine and that's why I'm an expert in mate. The way you took it is known as matecosido and you prepared it incorrectly the water should not be transparent it should see a deep green color similar to a tea and sugar is added also no one toasts the herb for any reason
@@GolosinasArgentinas It is a misunderstanding the Brazilian custom is to drink mate with raw yerba only in Brazil it is consumed in this way and to export it to other countries and in its domestic market it is known as tostada so that its consumers can differentiate it from what for them is its classic form
Another Argie here. Bagged mate cocido it's usually lighter in color. There are different ways of preparation so there is no "right" way to do it. Just enjoy the way you like most.
Seeing him brewing mate from a literal pinch is triggering me You suppose to fill it to 3/4 od volume. And brew IT on water around 70-80°C You can brew IT for like 5-7times. Its tradicionally brew in Palo Santo. Which is Saint tree in america. IT have nice resin which is bactericidal. I can be drinked in many ways. Such as Terere-yerba brew with cold water. Or ice which melts Cervaza-yerba brew with beer (often lager) Chimarrao-yerba fine like matcha drinked in guampa-horn And other ways You can brew it in milk, some makes pastry with it i love yerba

That Yerba is from the country where I live: Argentina. We call the preparation you did in the video "Mate cocido" (something like "boiled mate") Which is very different from the Mate we zip from those gourds. It's like one of the most prominent traditions here In South America, specifically Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and some of Brazil. Great video man, it's very interesting watching this from a northern perspective
In Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay they don't roast them. The best is green out of the bag. They have a very fresh scent. When made in a gourd and sipped with a bombillo with a little sugar it's thick, syrupy and fantastic, but may take time to develop a taste for it. I've had it fresh from Paraguay and also from a good importer, but most of the green mate is terrible. Roasted Mate has a total different flavor. I recall having a pot of Morning Thunder in early 1976 and going off to classes, a friend at the local bakery/cafe asked if I had tried Morning Thunder. I replied "Tried it? I'm on it!" Another Brazilian herb with caffeine if Guarana. I've had it in the form of a powder we picked up off in a Brazilian market in Mid town off 7th Ave 47 - 53rd St.
This was very interesting. I'm from south of Brazil, so I basically drink mate every morning until lunch. I drink it traditionally, in a gourd ("cuia") and in my case with a bamboo straw ("bomba") cause the metal ones can get very hot (and look too fancy for my taste). I drink it pretty much for the bitter, leafy taste, and because sometimes it's very cold in the morning so it's nice to have a hot beverage around, but I can't deny the energy boost it gives, specially when starting the day. Here in south of Brazil it is tradition to sit around with your family, friends or co-workers with a single cuia and a bottle of hot water and pass it around to each person to have a full cuia (around 200ml) before passing to the next person, while casually talking about daily events. In general it's a moment to chill and have a break from whatever people are doing. Of course now during the pandemic this custom is very disrupted, since passing the "bomba" (straw) mouth to mouth it's not a very good idea. I wish you could see the way we prepare mate here with the gourd and everything because it's a way to drink an infusion which is very characteristic from this part of America - and very different from a regular tea for sure. Oh, and of course, keep in mind this beverage it's a legacy from the indigenous people from this region, absorbed by the culture of the nations which invaded this land, so all my respect to those people everytime I drink it.

In Europe (its originally German) they have a mate based soda/energy drink that is called club-mate. Its similar to red bull but with alot less sugar and a better taste. Its super good and a much healthier choice than other energy drinks.
I’ve always wanted to try matè and finally sucked it up and ordered a gourd, bombilla, and some Argentine matè (rosamonte) and am watching this while sipping my second infusion. Love that you just went in to roasting your own leaves to start.
I grow Yerba Mate here in zone 9a. I have 2 trees about 5 ft tall and what's amazing is that we had two 15F winter events in three years with no effect on my Yerba Mate trees (one in-ground and one in a pot with no protection). Yerba Mate is an evergreen so you can enjoy Yerba Mate tea all year long. My Yerba Mate trees/bushes are a great beginner plant because they are drought tolerant and I have had no issues with bugs or dieseases (I'm in zone 9a bug and diseases heaven)
Yaupon is another caffeine-bearing holly. Grows in much of the southeast USA. The Seminole brought plants or maybe seed from points north and established a big grove in southern Florida. Tea from them was used in religious ceremonies. Europeans used yaupon as a tea substitute. I used to chew a few tiny fresh leaves for a caffeine hit. A few merchants sell yaupon leaves in or out of teabags...
the straw is a bombilla, the cup is a guampa a lot were also made from horns! IMO Paraguayan yerba is the best. Kurupi w/ mint and boldo is the best mainstream brand of yerba mate, I would drink it cold (terere) with my neighbors in Paraguay! The best social activity!
yerba mate is quite amazing! traditional here in Argentina lol, brewing it like a tea is quite common for breakfast, but we also drink it in a "mate" with less hot water, it's quite nice to enjoy with friends while studying, that thing is rocket fuel for people who don't drink it lol
You should do an episode exploring different varieties of tea. I think a fun one for you to do would be pu’erh tea, which is a type of tea from southern China that undergoes microbial fermentation in the leaves (does not produce alcohol). This type of tea can be aged like fine wine, and there is a whole community based around it. You could also explore: Wuyi rock tea (China), Fenghuang Dan Cong (Phoenix Dan cong tea, China), the green teas of coastal China, Taiwan high mountain oolongs (rolled oolongs), the various varieties of roasted teas throughout China and Taiwan, Japanese sencha/gyokuro/matcha, and so much more
I obliterate 2kg of that thing every month, right now it has me hooked up as hell. The flavor profile can vary a lot between brands, some people even gets picky with them, so if you have any oportunity, I recommend you try different types. You can also pour cold juice on it to make another drink called "tereré".
I have a yaupon holly in my yard. In the spring I picked new leaves and prepared them by instructions for black tea, which involves tossing them in a hot pan, rolling them in a towel to get all bruised up, and then letting them ferment to turn brown. It takes long. I brewed up a cup and made me so wired I haven’t drunk it again. Taste is like green tea or like fresh cut grass smells, plus bitterness and astringent from tannins. It reminds me a bit of green beans. I don’t think you’d like it.
In any latin food store you'll find a calabaza, which is the tradionnal recipient Argentinians use to drink it. If you like the flavor you should definitely look into getting one. The calabaza itself comes with a special straw which allows you to just drink it all day while filtering the loose leaves. It's a much slower and smoother brewing method and it's as authentic as it gets.
In Germany you can buy Mate tea everywhere. Its sold as a refreshing carbonated soft drink that is usually only half as sweet as for example coke, most famous is Club Mate.
We have it in that form in the states as well. Most stores carry it. It is a very far thing from proper mate tea. I’ve been drinking it for about 20 years in the states. I just ordered a bag on a whim and liked it.
I've just started trying yerba, brewed cold in a cup filled most of the way with the leaves and drinking through a slotted straw from the bottom of the cup. Based on your description I think the different manners of preparation produce extremely different beverages. On the advice of a friend who spent some time in S. American I spit out the first two or three fills of water - the flavor of the first couple of fills is VERY plant-y. A bit like wet straw or dried alfalfa. Not super good. But after that it mellows out a lot. I also think that just a little sweetener improves the flavor a lot. I also find that prepared this way the caffeine content is very high for the first several fills - judging by how I feel when I drink it. I have to take it easy because it's so potent. Anyway, it may be worth trying this style of preparation. It can be quite nice.
The reason it didn't taste like coffee is because you should have let it boil in the water until it is dark green, not trasparent at all, also, drinking it from an actual mate (with the straw) tastes very different to what you tried to do, which is "mate cocido" so it's a whole other experience. Great video, even though here in Uruguay you wouldn't be invited to hang out if you brought that.
Used to drink lots of mate when I could find it for sale near me. Felt like it gave me the energy of coffee without the jitters. One of the compounds in mate is a smooth muscle relaxer.
Dark roast mate is sold cold with lime in some beachs on Brasil. I recomend to use 1/4 cup of graund mate for 1 liter of wather, do not let the wather boil and let the leaves steep for half a hour if you want to drink it cold.
Please give a source as far I as I know teina is just what caffeine is called when it is inside tea but it's the same thing. But I could always be wrong
Cold soaking first and then brewing it the wat you did is the way to go. Tastes alot like green tea but more complex and less tanic that way honey really compliments it as well.
I love Yerba mate, though I’ve never had the pleasure of going to South America. I got some as a teen because it was different and have been drinking it ever since. I do have a gourd and straw, but generally just brew and strain into my cup. Generally more is used for that amount of water and it can be re-brewed a couple times. If I am not going to re-brew, I generally go for a tablespoon for 8oz of water and brew for 5-6 minutes. If I’m re-brewing I’ll use 2 tbs and brew for 2-3 minutes.
So there's this legend, right? I read about it on a book about various legends of various countries(the books name is pretty much this). And in that book, there was a legend concerning Yerba Mate, can't remember which country it was, it was a kids book and I read it as a little kid, but it was something like this: A family lived kind of isolated, in their own small farm, the winter was coming and the last harvest wasn't going to last all winter, they didn't have enough to eat, they had pretty much one serving of bread. So Lady Moon, one day, decided to descend into earth, coincidentally into that family's farm, the family gently invited her to their home, giving all the hospitality one does in these cases, a good talk and some food. Incidentally, that food was the last one they had. So the Moon thanked the people, and was going back to the place where she stays (space), but then, I don't remember how, I think she heard their kids crying from far away or something, so she went to check through the window and discovered that the family that received her probably wasn't going to last one week without food. So she got sad, and she cried all the way to heaven, each tear falling down on her path, and moistening the cold earth from that house's farm. The next day, the farmer found a strange herb populating his farm, as he didn't have anything better to do, he harvested that herb, and kept it. His wife, with nothing to do too, saddened by her and her family's hunger, then made tea with it for the family to drink, because water can alleviate it a little, and upon drinking said tea, they discovered that their hunger had gone away, and they felt energized, and that drinking that mysterious herb's tea would make them last until the season ended. It is a tale to describe some of the properties said herb has, and its 'mystical origins'(I think).

Argentina is the leader of production and Uruguay of consumption. It's debatable which one yerba mate originated from. (Mate in Paraguay is known because of it's history?, I don't remember).
Tea leaves have more caffeine than coffee beans, I extract caffeine from tea at my university. Hence if yerba mate has more caffeine that tea leaves, it also has more caffeine than coffee beans.

Tea leaves have more caffeine than coffee beans. The thing is you use much less tea leaves to make a cup of tea than you use beans to make a cup of coffee.

Here in Rio (Brazil) we have this very famous erva mate tea brand named "Matte Leão", which is the leaves deeply roasted and grounded. We usually drink it as an iced tea since the weather is generally very hot. I love it and drink it every other day, mixed with lime juice is so refreshing! In the southern states, Argentina and Uruguay (as pointed out by others) the dried and lightly roasted leaves are very popular as a hot water infusion named "Chimarrão", but other parts of Brazil and Paraguay also have a cold water infusion named "Tererê".
If you read a comment made by an argentine in this video, pay them no mind.
Families have been torn asunder and civil wars fought over how to drink mate, so if you're a foreigner, just have it like you enjoy it most.

Some notes:
In Brazil we have the "mate tostado", that has a distinctive caramel flavour and colour. Usually drinked hot, or cold with lime juice.
There is "mate verde para chimarrão", similar the one used in Uruguay and Argentina. The leaves are quickly fire-roasted. It's made with boling water, and can be more or less bitter (young or old leaves), usually drink inside a "cuia" - dried oval calabash fruit.
And we have the "mate verde", an unfermented and unroasted young green leaves, and it's mate like tisana, just adding wather (sometimes with lemon) and let ambient-temperature to infuse. This drink is called in Brazil as "tereré", and has a very distinctive fruit-floral flavour, and I think is very refreshing.
I love the ilex genus of plants.

I have foraged Ilex Vomitoria (Yaupon) and have tried everything in my power to get ahold of Ilex Guayusa cuttings.
Ilex guayusa is my favorite plant. It has all the benefits of containing the Xanthines we love as seen in Ilex Paraguariensis or Yerba Mate but with the added benefit of containing the amino acid derived l-theanine.
I love it because it makes no sense to be one of only two plant species in the world to contain l-theanine, but it just has it. Unrelated to green tea completely, and none of its family has any theanine that we know of, yet this single plant does.
I love Yaupon because it's North America's indigenous caffeinated plant, they grow back home, I take cuttings and seeds every time I go there.
I like the hollies more than tea because you can abuse them a little bit with temperature and boiling times without them becoming tannic and astringent like with tea plant tea.
Its really interesting to learn so many are edible. There is a chinese tea shop in NYC that has "holly tea" on their menu.. now I want to find out what kind of ilex it is.

Bensky's Materia Medica does not include that one but has the root of _Ilex pubescens_ used in South China, just as medicine. 毛冬青 mao dong qing, meaning "hairy winter green".
Tests showed no methylxanthines of any kind in kuding cha (theophylline, theobromine nor caffeine). Nor in the other three species used in China: _Ilex cornuta, I. latifolia, I. pubescens._ Kuding cha does contain caffeoylquinic acids, including chlorogenic acid, generally believed to be very beneficial in humans. It is in the same section as common European holly, _Ilex aquifolium._ The American species _I. guayusa, I. paraguariensis_ and _I. vomitoria_ are all in the section Repandae and are the only ones that seem to have caffeine in this study with _I. guayusa_ having the highest levels. Though there are at least 475 species of Ilex, so others are likely to have it.

Hi, I'm Argentine and that's why I'm an expert in mate. The way you took it is known as matecosido and you prepared it incorrectly the water should not be transparent it should see a deep green color similar to a tea and sugar is added also no one toasts the herb for any reason

There is roasted mate in Brazil, at least in mate cocido form ("chá mate" in bags).

Another Argie here. Bagged mate cocido it's usually lighter in color. There are different ways of preparation so there is no "right" way to do it. Just enjoy the way you like most.
There is also "Tereré" where you drink the mate cocido cold or mixed with juice, but always cold.

Its tradicionally brew in Palo Santo. Which is Saint tree in america. IT have nice resin which is bactericidal. I can be drinked in many ways. Such as
Terere-yerba brew with cold water. Or ice which melts
Cervaza-yerba brew with beer (often lager)
Chimarrao-yerba fine like matcha drinked in guampa-horn
And other ways
You can brew it in milk, some makes pastry with it

That Yerba is from the country where I live: Argentina. We call the preparation you did in the video "Mate cocido" (something like "boiled mate") Which is very different from the Mate we zip from those gourds. It's like one of the most prominent traditions here In South America, specifically Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina and some of Brazil. Great video man, it's very interesting watching this from a northern perspective
In Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay they don't roast them. The best is green out of the bag. They have a very fresh scent. When made in a gourd and sipped with a bombillo with a little sugar it's thick, syrupy and fantastic, but may take time to develop a taste for it. I've had it fresh from Paraguay and also from a good importer, but most of the green mate is terrible. Roasted Mate has a total different flavor. I recall having a pot of Morning Thunder in early 1976 and going off to classes, a friend at the local bakery/cafe asked if I had tried Morning Thunder. I replied "Tried it? I'm on it!" Another Brazilian herb with caffeine if Guarana. I've had it in the form of a powder we picked up off in a Brazilian market in Mid town off 7th Ave 47 - 53rd St.
This was very interesting. I'm from south of Brazil, so I basically drink mate every morning until lunch. I drink it traditionally, in a gourd ("cuia") and in my case with a bamboo straw ("bomba") cause the metal ones can get very hot (and look too fancy for my taste). I drink it pretty much for the bitter, leafy taste, and because sometimes it's very cold in the morning so it's nice to have a hot beverage around, but I can't deny the energy boost it gives, specially when starting the day. Here in south of Brazil it is tradition to sit around with your family, friends or co-workers with a single cuia and a bottle of hot water and pass it around to each person to have a full cuia (around 200ml) before passing to the next person, while casually talking about daily events. In general it's a moment to chill and have a break from whatever people are doing. Of course now during the pandemic this custom is very disrupted, since passing the "bomba" (straw) mouth to mouth it's not a very good idea. I wish you could see the way we prepare mate here with the gourd and everything because it's a way to drink an infusion which is very characteristic from this part of America - and very different from a regular tea for sure. Oh, and of course, keep in mind this beverage it's a legacy from the indigenous people from this region, absorbed by the culture of the nations which invaded this land, so all my respect to those people everytime I drink it.

In Europe (its originally German) they have a mate based soda/energy drink that is called club-mate. Its similar to red bull but with alot less sugar and a better taste. Its super good and a much healthier choice than other energy drinks.

I grow Yerba Mate here in zone 9a. I have 2 trees about 5 ft tall and what's amazing is that we had two 15F winter events in three years with no effect on my Yerba Mate trees (one in-ground and one in a pot with no protection). Yerba Mate is an evergreen so you can enjoy Yerba Mate tea all year long. My Yerba Mate trees/bushes are a great beginner plant because they are drought tolerant and I have had no issues with bugs or dieseases (I'm in zone 9a bug and diseases heaven)
You should try with a proper preparation of the Yerba mate
Yaupon is another caffeine-bearing holly. Grows in much of the southeast USA. The Seminole brought plants or maybe seed from points north and established a big grove in southern Florida. Tea from them was used in religious ceremonies. Europeans used yaupon as a tea substitute. I used to chew a few tiny fresh leaves for a caffeine hit.
A few merchants sell yaupon leaves in or out of teabags...

IMO Paraguayan yerba is the best. Kurupi w/ mint and boldo is the best mainstream brand of yerba mate, I would drink it cold (terere) with my neighbors in Paraguay! The best social activity!
yerba mate is quite amazing! traditional here in Argentina lol, brewing it like a tea is quite common for breakfast, but we also drink it in a "mate" with less hot water, it's quite nice to enjoy with friends while studying, that thing is rocket fuel for people who don't drink it lol
You should do an episode exploring different varieties of tea. I think a fun one for you to do would be pu’erh tea, which is a type of tea from southern China that undergoes microbial fermentation in the leaves (does not produce alcohol). This type of tea can be aged like fine wine, and there is a whole community based around it.
You could also explore: Wuyi rock tea (China), Fenghuang Dan Cong (Phoenix Dan cong tea, China), the green teas of coastal China, Taiwan high mountain oolongs (rolled oolongs), the various varieties of roasted teas throughout China and Taiwan, Japanese sencha/gyokuro/matcha, and so much more

I obliterate 2kg of that thing every month, right now it has me hooked up as hell. The flavor profile can vary a lot between brands, some people even gets picky with them, so if you have any oportunity, I recommend you try different types. You can also pour cold juice on it to make another drink called "tereré".

I have a yaupon holly in my yard. In the spring I picked new leaves and prepared them by instructions for black tea, which involves tossing them in a hot pan, rolling them in a towel to get all bruised up, and then letting them ferment to turn brown. It takes long. I brewed up a cup and made me so wired I haven’t drunk it again. Taste is like green tea or like fresh cut grass smells, plus bitterness and astringent from tannins. It reminds me a bit of green beans. I don’t think you’d like it.

In any latin food store you'll find a calabaza, which is the tradionnal recipient Argentinians use to drink it. If you like the flavor you should definitely look into getting one. The calabaza itself comes with a special straw which allows you to just drink it all day while filtering the loose leaves. It's a much slower and smoother brewing method and it's as authentic as it gets.

In Germany you can buy Mate tea everywhere. Its sold as a refreshing carbonated soft drink that is usually only half as sweet as for example coke, most famous is Club Mate.
We have it in that form in the states as well. Most stores carry it. It is a very far thing from proper mate tea. I’ve been drinking it for about 20 years in the states. I just ordered a bag on a whim and liked it.

I've just started trying yerba, brewed cold in a cup filled most of the way with the leaves and drinking through a slotted straw from the bottom of the cup. Based on your description I think the different manners of preparation produce extremely different beverages. On the advice of a friend who spent some time in S. American I spit out the first two or three fills of water - the flavor of the first couple of fills is VERY plant-y. A bit like wet straw or dried alfalfa. Not super good. But after that it mellows out a lot. I also think that just a little sweetener improves the flavor a lot. I also find that prepared this way the caffeine content is very high for the first several fills - judging by how I feel when I drink it. I have to take it easy because it's so potent. Anyway, it may be worth trying this style of preparation. It can be quite nice.

I drink the original Guayaki brand -- boosts energy and clears the mind.
The reason it didn't taste like coffee is because you should have let it boil in the water until it is dark green, not trasparent at all, also, drinking it from an actual mate (with the straw) tastes very different to what you tried to do, which is "mate cocido" so it's a whole other experience.
Great video, even though here in Uruguay you wouldn't be invited to hang out if you brought that.
Used to drink lots of mate when I could find it for sale near me. Felt like it gave me the energy of coffee without the jitters. One of the compounds in mate is a smooth muscle relaxer.

Dark roast mate is sold cold with lime in some beachs on Brasil. I recomend to use 1/4 cup of graund mate for 1 liter of wather, do not let the wather boil and let the leaves steep for half a hour if you want to drink it cold.

Coffee has caffeine, tea has teína. Two completely different compounds.
Please give a source as far I as I know teina is just what caffeine is called when it is inside tea but it's the same thing. But I could always be wrong

Cold soaking first and then brewing it the wat you did is the way to go. Tastes alot like green tea but more complex and less tanic that way honey really compliments it as well.

I love Yerba mate, though I’ve never had the pleasure of going to South America. I got some as a teen because it was different and have been drinking it ever since. I do have a gourd and straw, but generally just brew and strain into my cup. Generally more is used for that amount of water and it can be re-brewed a couple times. If I am not going to re-brew, I generally go for a tablespoon for 8oz of water and brew for 5-6 minutes. If I’m re-brewing I’ll use 2 tbs and brew for 2-3 minutes.
So there's this legend, right? I read about it on a book about various legends of various countries(the books name is pretty much this). And in that book, there was a legend concerning Yerba Mate, can't remember which country it was, it was a kids book and I read it as a little kid, but it was something like this:
A family lived kind of isolated, in their own small farm, the winter was coming and the last harvest wasn't going to last all winter, they didn't have enough to eat, they had pretty much one serving of bread.
So Lady Moon, one day, decided to descend into earth, coincidentally into that family's farm, the family gently invited her to their home, giving all the hospitality one does in these cases, a good talk and some food. Incidentally, that food was the last one they had. So the Moon thanked the people, and was going back to the place where she stays (space), but then, I don't remember how, I think she heard their kids crying from far away or something, so she went to check through the window and discovered that the family that received her probably wasn't going to last one week without food. So she got sad, and she cried all the way to heaven, each tear falling down on her path, and moistening the cold earth from that house's farm.
The next day, the farmer found a strange herb populating his farm, as he didn't have anything better to do, he harvested that herb, and kept it. His wife, with nothing to do too, saddened by her and her family's hunger, then made tea with it for the family to drink, because water can alleviate it a little, and upon drinking said tea, they discovered that their hunger had gone away, and they felt energized, and that drinking that mysterious herb's tea would make them last until the season ended.
It is a tale to describe some of the properties said herb has, and its 'mystical origins'(I think).

Argentina is the leader of production and Uruguay of consumption. It's debatable which one yerba mate originated from.

Tea leaves have more caffeine than coffee beans, I extract caffeine from tea at my university. Hence if yerba mate has more caffeine that tea leaves, it also has more caffeine than coffee beans.
I like carbonated mate drinks (no non-sugar sweeteners). I don't drink alcohol so it's nice to drink something different that isn't liquid dessert

Tea leaves have more caffeine than coffee beans. The thing is you use much less tea leaves to make a cup of tea than you use beans to make a cup of coffee.
