The problem wasn't just Walter Smith's abject tactical approach it was fitness and sharpness. You can bet the Italians weren't out bevvying every weekend and at this level that can make a big difference. For the amount of the Bank of Scotland's money they were throwing about back then they should have had a far better side in Europe. Perhaps if they had a better manager they could had a decent chance of winning it.
