In this instance, what really makes it work is that he clearly enunciates each word. This is a good technique because it gives the felling that he is speaking softly or whispering. When people speak they tend to chop off the endings of words, "I can'T helP fallING in love wiTH you." When speaking softly or whispering, we automatically say the words more distinctly. That effect makes this performance seem so intimate. Many women over the years expressed that it always seemed like Elvis was speaking to them personally when he sang. As the lyrics in Alannah Myles' song "Black Velvet" say, "every word of every song he sang was for you."

Thank you, Beth. This is one of Elvis' classics. I was born in 1949, so the 1950's was the decade of my childhood. I heard Elvis for the first time in 1956, when his music was known as "Rock-A-Billy." Even as a tike in the second grade, I thought his voice was different and special. Sometime during the late '50's, a New York City D.J. named Allen (sp?) Fried called the new style of music "Rock-and-Roll." That name stuck. And the controversy over rock music started. By then, my parents would not allow me to listen to Elvis (at home). I listened to him in other venues, and I saw every one of his movies because of that voice.
Obviously, this song brings back many memories. And Elvis' deep, smooth voice helps make the memories pleasant.

He had rabid Elvis fans that made him prove again and again that he wasn't lip syncing. My dad says that the main secret to singing like Elvis is, first relax like crazy. Elvis was *the* example of relaxed singing. Second, start to yawn. Half way through the yawn stop, that half yawn throat, as loose as possible is how to start to sound like Elvis.

It must be said that you are blazing hot but I'm sure you're already completely aware of that but it has to be said just like anybody would say it about all this. I am still fascinated with his voice. And his performing ability. I am a middle-aged white guy and played in bands for many years and I never had any classical vocal training and neither did Elvis but unfortunately I wasn't born with that kind of talent. I once read the Luciano Pavarotti said that if Elvis had classical vocal training, he might well have been the greatest opera singer of the century. And you can hear that when he does gospel for sure. How great thou art for example which is one of my favorite hymns.

@Seamus Lannon Because George Michael is better and I don't like Rock and Roll, it's so old fashion. I like Pop. But if I was to sing like Elvis it's chessy, it's a joke. The new stuff is always better let's be honest. Yes, I know people are going back to Vinyl

Blue 552 Elvis is the biggest selling solo artist in the history of recorded music & has been inducted into more Music Halls of Fame than any other solo singer or Group. You obviously have listened to very little of Elvis’ music as he not only sang Rock & Roll but also Pop, R & B, Country, Rockabilly & Gospel. You claim George Michael is better but that is merely your opinion & not a fact....Michael did not have Elvis’ vocal range or ability to sing many genres of music like Elvis!

@@terrycullinane9437 OMG I'm still mourning that SEGA lost to Nintendo, and that Super Fast Cool Sonic The Hedgehog was beaten by Overweight Fat Moustache Mario - AND you've joined in to go back to this topic to remind me that Elvis is the King? What the mainstream tells me doesn't mean anything to me?

"It's Now or Never," was also somewhat from an operatic seed -- the Italian piece "O Solo Mio."
From what I read Elvis' voice covers 2-octaves and a third. From the baritone low-G to the tenor high B, with an upward extension in falsetto to at least a D flat. Elvis' best octave was in the middle from D-flat to D-flat, granting an extra full step up or down.
I was also told by my singing teacher years ago (and he was 20-years older than Elvis) that he noted that Elvis' intonation, phrasing & inflection skills were of exceptional quality. So creative that a singing teacher could not have taught him what he does. He was a natural. Maybe ultimately, that's the reason Elvis was so special. Even when singers with similar voices imitate him they miss the magical quality & pronounce words incorrectly.
I enjoyed your assessment Beth, as I always do. You speak in a manner that allows people who are not familiar with singing to better understand the skill. I have also corrected people who refer to some singers as having a great falsetto when in actuality they were pure tenors. Nothing false about it. Especially when they hit notes with such clarity. Bobby Hatfield is an example when he sang "Unchained Melody."

The Lord blessed Elvis with a singing voice that was phenomenal despite not having any formal training. He may have been influenced by black gospel and blues singers in the beginning but he lacked that gin soaked growl in his voice which was as clear as a bell right to the very end.

There were.other songs that showed off his pipes. Fat Elvis, sweating over the piano, blasting his version of Unchained Melody was one. And man, he had some great pipes.

    Trivia
I'm from Memphis, Tennessee (where Elvis lived). The University of Tennessee's medical school is in Memphis. My Pathology teacher (1989-1990) was the Shelby County Medical Examiner when Elvis died. I never could get anything out of him about that.

Fun fact about Elvis. His number *2* dream was to be a famous singer. Movie star was his original and _main_ dream. In his first movie, he demanded that they not make him sing. However one of the movies songwriters wrote 'Love Me Tender' and after hearing the song, basically everyone involved begged and pleaded him to sing that song at least. He grudgingly agreed after hearing the song.
