Very clear explanation. Thanks. So question: [at 13:47 ] if I'm doing a very long fibre (168km), should I be actually doing a few tests/fibre at DIFFERENT pulse widths just to be able to observe the near and the far splices? (I'm doing bidirectional too)? Launch cable is 1.5km.
It is an FTB-1Pro with a FTB-720C-Q1-EA-EI module. Yes, I was wondering if it was capable and may need to rent/borrow a more powerful unit. Thanks for quick REPLY! . (My other OPGW spans are 77km and 124km.)
Hey. Thanks for the video, very informative. I was wondering if this EXFO OTDR is eligible to show detailed test results (Value dB, Limit dB, and Loss dB) on a fiber optic cable that below 100m in length. Looking forward to the feedback. Thanks!
Joseph I am glad you liked the video. Yes it has the resolution to measure a 100m fiber. I would use the shortest pulse width with at least a 15 second averaging time. With lengths that short I typically lean towards an OLTS measuring span loss and ORL. If there is a splice or connector within the 100m than an OTDR would be ideal to measure that event
Yes if it’s on the same network you can use VNC. If it’s on different network you can use QuickAssist or TeamViewer. Although I have not tried it you might be able to do USB3 out to HDMI. I have an adapter somewhere I will have to try it out
Hi Sir. I have EXFO FTB-1 OTDR but when I press the power button there's no screen display, still in black screen only. Do you know what's the problem and how to repair it?
Hard to say sir. Could be a battery issue or a display problem. I recommend removing the batteries. Unplug it. Than put it back together. Put the AC power and see if it starts. You can email support@EXFO.com and work with them to troubleshoot
@@salahmunasar4686 I have never seen that before. Can you email support@exfo.com with a screenshot of the issue if you have it and they can point you in the right direction for assistance.
Hi Kevin. Thank you for this video. One question. What is the recommended launch cable length? Do I need 500m for a network of about 10km in length? Or is 30m patch cord enough? Thanks again Kevin for this video
You are welcome. I am glad you found value in the video. As far as the launch. Great question. It really depends on the pulse width. One way to determine is to take the Pulse width in (ns) divided by 10. Convert to meters and multiply by 2. Example: 1 μs -> 1000ns / 10 -> 100m x 2 = 200 meter -> Appropriate launch cable (multiplying the distance times 2 is to add margin for the pulse to recover you can safely go down to 1.5 times) If you use iOLM you can get away with a shorter launch. Most of the customers I work with use 100m under 20km and 1000m over 20km. If you get into ultra long haul you need to look at launch longer than 1000m.
I use an OTDR to locate a break. To achieve this is the best thing to do, select auto and start a test? As I don’t know the actual length of the line to initially optimise and I also don’t care at this stage. Second, how would I identify a splice on a fibre with the otdr ?
That is how I typically do it. Make sure you have a nice clean launch select auto and let the OTDR optimize. If you are troubleshooting set your averaging time to 30 seconds or more. The longer the averaging time the more optimized the pulse width. Once the test is done if you locate your problem you are good otherwise you can try lowering your pulse width to increase your resolution. You can balance this with adding more averaging time. The OTDR will identify the splice for you if it’s detectable. It will have some attenuation bit more reflection. Hope this all makes sense
@@KevinPeres amazing! Thank you :) I run for 30 seconds as I believe that is what the auto test runs at by default. What would a splice actually look like on the otdr trace? Are they highlighted by the lines in the trace? And what sort of loss would you need to have on a splice for an otdr to pick it up? That would be really useful for locating joints in a network that aren’t on any plans
@@bhtradinggroup5340 splices will have some attenuation, usually a loss but can be a gainer but NO reflection.
