We retired early in 2018 to pursue the dream of financial independence and are traveling the globe in search of our little piece of paradise to call our forever home. Our Forever Home Requirement Checklist:
□ Distance to International Airport: Less than 45 minute by car, train, subway or bus
□ Public Transportation: Reliable metro and bus systems, trains, rideshare services and bike/scooter friendly
□ Walkability: Markets/restaurants/shops within a 15 minute walk, parks and outdoor recreation within a 30 minute drive
□ Things to Do: International restaurants, parks/outdoor activities, live music and art scene. Beaches, nearby city attractions and dog friendly activities
□ Average Weather: Ideally between 60F - 80 degrees year round. 300 days or more of sun, exposure to no or few natural disasters
□ Access to beaches: Walking distance preferred or 3-hour drive max. Wide, quiet beaches with plenty of water sports
□ Cost of living: Low cost utilities, fresh foods, energy efficient alternatives
□ Good medical care: Major hospital within 10 miles, high quality care, low health insurance premiums and prompt emergency services
□ Safety and Security: Low crime rates, able to walk around safely at night and active police presence
□ Price/Style of Homes: Up to $400,000usd purchase price or $1,800 a month for rent -2 Bedroom/2 Bath minimum, yard space, high speed internet, approximately 200sq meters finished space. Detached home preferred, views, pool access and a gated community is a plus.

Dogs must be registered and identified. There is a DNA test for each dog so owners risk a large fine in case dog poo is found in the street.
We did not know that...what a great initiative. Wish they had this all over the world. 🚫💩😁
How did I miss Malaga when I visited Spain last year? I don't know, but I will not forgive myself. My wife and I will retire in Spain in 2026 (can't wait). We were settling our site on Seville for now, but Malaga is a great option as well. I am Latino and my wife Chinese, and yes, she will need to learn Spanish.
Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! We love the Costa del Sol and Spain in general. Malaga is definitely a different vibe than Seville. Let us know what you think after visiting.
I was in Malaga for 10 days in April - May 2022 and love to go back. I'm not looking to be an expat, but would love to go somewhere hot for one or two months each year to get out of the Canadian winter!
The Costa del Sol is a beautiful place to go! We were in Mijas and Fuengirola recently that are near Malaga and are working on videos about these Costa del Sol neighborhoods.

I heard about Malaga on expat sites and decided to visit this year. I was blown away by the experience, what a beautiful place. I plan on spending more time in the area after I retire, strong contender for a permanent home. Love your review of Malaga, you confirm what I noticed as well. I hope to go back again in the spring.

Costa del sol, particularly Benalmadena was voted the number 1 place to live in Spain; with many expats making it their home, over 60% of the homeowners in the mijas area are from the United Kingdom

Love your content , just came back from Torremolinos a beach town 20 mins drive to Malaga loved it spent 3 weeks in December stayed at the Bajondillio on the beach , will be back next year .

I don't know anyone who makes 2710€ a month in Malaga (the average wage you cite) - the minimum wage is closer to 1000€ and rents have skyrocketed here. The average worker makes closer to 1K a month, and yet it's very hard to rent a 2 bdrm apartment for less than that. In fact, long term rentals are extremely hard to find now, thanks to the 'expat boom' you mention, property speculators, AirBnB... Malaga has become a trendy place and the locals are getting squeezed out. Sad to see.
The 2710€ is the nation's average salary. Smaller cities other than Madrid and Barcelona will certainly be on the lower end of this number. Yes, gentrification is an issue in many desirable cities around the world including Lisbon where we live now. The government here is eliminating the golden visa and Airbnb approvals in an effort to help. It is definitely a very difficult issue.
I’m planning on retiring in Spain and Malaga was one of my choices. My grandparents were Spaniards and I just absolutely love how beautiful Spain really is.
It is beautiful and the people in Malaga are some of the friendliest we've met. We are exploring areas around Malaga ourselves because we love it so much. We'll be posting videos soon about Fuengirola and Mijas that are nearby.

There is so much in this video that I don't know what to comment on. Congratulations on a great video--very precise with good maps and statistics. I love the way you show prices on the screen. Everything was very professional. I have always wanted to do that Caminito del Rey walk. Lastly, your comparison of the cost of living showing three cities on the screen was brilliant. We can see how Lisbon has become so expensive, especially in rent. Lisbon used to be much cheaper than Spanish cities--not the case today.
