  • With the advent of the modern legal system, India has transformed from a dharma-based society to rule-based society. This talk is a collection of interesting stories from the Mahabharata that seeks to explore parallels between the norms of public conduct in ancient India and the constitutional morality of modern India.
Apurv Mishra is a founding member of the multi-national volunteer organisation, Robin Hood Army. He is the editor-in-chief of the India Law Journal and is a visiting faculty at the Young India Fellowship programme of the Ashoka University.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

When I was 15, in 1973, I was at Kennedy Airport, to fly to Switzerand to traveling with my older brother, to study meditation with Maharishi, because my mother wanted me to leave the USA, kicked out of school. A beautiful (American) girl in a sari, put a flower in my lapel, and asked for a donation for the Hare Krishna movement, and, being into TM, I hesistated, but, pulled out my wallet and found a ten dollar bill, and, she took it, and gave me Swami Prabupada's translation of the Mahabarata. I read it on the plane, a couple times, and loaned it to everyone on my floor in the hotel, while we became TM teachers, studied Maharishi's puja, yoga, pranayama, and mantra meditation, but Reading the Mahabarata, and later, the Laghu-yoga Vasisishta changes how you see the world, no matter where you come from. The world is grateful for what the word Dharma means. Somehow, just the sound of that word meant as much to me as anyone has ever explained about right and wrong. Ramayana & Mahabarata changes the human brain...

This is why I love the Mahabharat so much. For me, it's all about the back-story. Each person is connected by a cosmic, karmic thread and it all plays out so intricately.
Again, I love the Mahabharat and being that today is TRITIYA AKSHAYA, it's also the day when Srila Vyasadev and Ganeshji undertook the Herculean task of compiling the Vedas.

gandhari was chosen by bhishma because she had a boon to have many children. The king of gandhara subala was only very pleased to offer his daughter to the Prince of Hastinapuram. Also Gandhari was never a widow (as per the Vyasa Bharatha). This was just a local story which became very popular. Sakuni was a person who did things that pleased Duryodhana. Just the way karna saw to that Duryodhana's hatred towards the Pandavas kept increasing by the day. Yet at times it was Sakuni who gave more sane advice to Duryodhana though the late would not listen. Personally i feel that Karna did more damage to Duryodhana than Sakuni.

The terminology "sleeping with" is incorrect - those Rishis' did not have to " sleep with" someone to beget children. It was more of an " ichha" shakti - unfathomable to modern science. We are about a million miles away to this even in IVF or assisted parenting.

@@sidharthvarma8773 The evolution of the Mahabharata and Sanskrit texts do not generally work with deletions. They are largely interpolations and additions to the text across thousands of years. This story of being Manglik is not found in any of the Sanskrit recensions (Northern and Southern). It is very likely that the tale is of a regional folk origin at a much later date, to add Masala to the original Mahabharata. Textually, we cannot trace any truth to this story in any Sanskrit version. Therefore, the story is a mere fancy of folklore, which has gained popularity.

I heard about the story on shakuni as presented here may be 50 years back. I also vividly remember seeing a B&W Hindi movie in my childhood , showing all Shakuni:s brothers and his father starving to death in a prison cell while shakuni serviving with the little morsel of food supplied for all the brothers and his father. However I cannot tell now whether that movie was based on Ved Vyas Mahabharata or any folklore. But in Raja Gopalacharjee's written Mahabharata , which I read most , there is no reference of such incidents. No such episode found included in any of the TV serials of BP Chopra or Ramanand Sugar. The presenter of this vedio should give proper references on the topic.

Namaste @ApurvaMishra: firstly, please know that Mahabharta is our HISTORY. As to the questions you have, these are all clarified in The Bhagavad Gita itself and in other sources. You just need to go in depth and read The Gita. Freewill that we exercise creates our own destiny. Freewill can be used to improve on one's gunas (sat, rajas, tamas). Let me try to briefly explain here below. I highly encourage you and all others to read The Bhagavad Gita as many times as necessary and until you have understood it well.
-- Dharma is as one understands it to be for oneself. Shakuni had the freewill to not use his sister's sons/his own nephews for the sake of revenge.
He misguided his nephews and basically sacrificed them all, made his own sister son-less in order to take revenge from Bheeshma for his own family.
His sister is also his own blood relative, though. How would the revenge help him?
--Ved vyas was fulfilling his promise towards his mother to help her in time of need.
Bheeshma on the other hand refused to impregnate Amba and Ambalika because of his vow of celibacy. Remember also that he had also promised Satyavati's father
that he would never have a son of his own, so that Satyavati's own line of inheritance could continue.
Hence it was much eaiser for Ved Vyaas ji to fulfil his mother's wishes.
--As to Duryohana compulsively doing wrong and saying it is in his nature, please read about the three gunas and samskaaras. That clarifies it.
--As to Bheesma pitama being cursed to be born on earth by Vashishta, please read as to WHY he was cursed. In short, due to his own past karma (as Vasu) of stealing
a cow with certain powers. When Rishi Vashishta noticed that, he cursed the vasus. So it is not destiny per se, but what the vasus themselves made (through own karma). Same applies to us humans. Hare Krishna

Sir, I'm watching this video after 3 years so I don't know you've already got your answers or not or this will be useful or not.
But Krishna also says every being has his own free will to choose from good and bad what's best for it, with saying that everything that we do is what he wants us to do.
So answer of your questions are in geeta itself if you try to analyse it properly, the god is the creator of everything dark & light, good & bad so he just puts something into your ears or mind either a good idea or a bad idea it depends on your free will you choose to bad one and enjoy doing that more because it just has a bad end or choose the good one even if there's alot of pain in it. In the end you've did what he wanted you to do because he gave you the idea.
So he went to Duryodhana to make him understand but Duryodhana refused to understand & helped Krishna for Dharma Sthapana being bad itself.
And Bhisma's decision was based on his character rest maybe you understand by reading what I've written up 👆

Such morons mixing facts with fiction, no wonder they are so confused. Gandhari was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and had already secured a boon for having 100 children. Bhishma knew this and hence the marriage proposal was sent to Gandhar which was willing accepted. The moment Gandhari knew that she is going to marry a blind prince, she willingly tied a cloth around her eyes; such was her devotion to her future husband. You don't make sacrifices like that if you are forcefully married against your wish. It is true that Sathyawati requested both Bhishma and Vyasa to carry the lineage forward but Bhishma had already taken an oath of celibacy while Vyasa was under no such obligation hence was willing to oblige. Arjuna's refusal to accept Urvashi was a great sign of his character and sense control. He is ready and willing to undergo the curse of loss of manhood for a period of one year instead of compromising on his morals. He even refused to marry Utara, the daughter of King Virata of Matsyadesh where Pandava spent their one year in Agyaat Vaas (Incognito). Instead he says that he has always looked at Utara as his daughter and his son Abhimanyu would be a more suitable alliance. Please don't distort facts as Mahabharata is rated as Pancham Veda, the fifth Veda where the intricacies of Dharma including many moral dilemma are so beautifully illustrated.

You are absolutely right. Your point is already cleared in initial episodes. I have based my speeches on 7 volumes published by Sastu Sahitya Bhandar, Ahmedabad. There are number of versions of Mahabharat, different for North India , south and other countries too. There are evident subsequent additions as it happens in other popular books. However I have felt that there is great depth of aadhyatma which is not apparent on the surface of it. I do feel that experts should make or reconstruct a standard Mahabharat and nobody should ever be allowed to make any additions and alterations in it. We Hindus are generous and tolerate such things which in long run vitiate our valuable treasures. This can not be imagined in case of Islamic religious books. Thanks.

At 9:53, when does Krishna offers knowledge of Gita to Duryodhana?
As far as I know He just shows his Vishwarupa form and ensure that everyone in the court knows that they are against the God if they side with Duryodhana.
Where in the Mahabharata does Krishna asks Dhuryodhana for a priviate talk to give him the knowledge of Gita. I do not disagree with the part wherein Duryodhana replies that his nature or prakriti is such that it does not allow him to do the right thing but nowhere does Krishna offers him Gita unlike what He says to Arjun.
If anyone can kindly comment on the accuracy of the speaker in this regard and point me to the source that verifies the speakers claim, precisely the point in Mahabharat that speaker is referring to.

Multiple inaccurate statements : 1. sakuni story is not from reliable source 2. Listening to elders is not greatest dharma, infact you need to counter elders when they are saying/doing adharma (wrong). Ram did not listen to his father when Dasardh told Ram to imprison him and rule Ayodhya. Vibeeshan did not listen to Ravaan. Lakshman blocked Ram from shooting bhramastra in kiskindha kanda.

Dharma varies from age to age & even place to place. While Parashar muni’s aberration led to Ved Vyas’s birth (cf. Gita: Krishna says brahma is the mahad yoni in which he (who is Amruta) impregnates the seed). Yet, if Bhishma had just reasoned with his father, the impropriety of his desire & stopped him, whole Mahabharata would not have occurred. In M. B.., it is a chain of false loyalties to father, throne, mother’s word to share, must accept challenge to gamble, etc.that is the root of the magnifying enormity of inequity. The Pandavas had their anchor in Krishna right and sailed through.

    1. Whats the source of this story?
    2. It is pronounced epi-ta-mee not epi-toam.

The Mahabharata describes a Previous Civilization that lived 25,000 years ago, They were more highly developed than our civilization now. To learn much more about the cycle of civilizationst, read the e-book: "what I know about Nibiru". Just search for: know nibiru
