- South Korean and United States officials warned Russian President Vladimir Putin against forging closer military ties with North Korea. Seoul’s Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun held an emergency phone call with US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell to discuss Putin's planned visit to North Korea. On June 13, the Kremlin declined to divulge the date for the possible visit but said that Moscow is ‘developing bilateral ties with Pyongyang. The South Korean Defence Minister Shin Won-sik told Bloomberg that Pyongyang sent containers to Russia that could contain as many as 4.8 million artillery shells. Meanwhile, the Chinese foreign ministry on June 13 said the country supports Russia’s initiative to boost ties with North Korea. Kurt Campbell, US Deputy Secretary of State, said
“Hard currency? Is it energy? Is it capabilities that allow them to advance their nuclear or missile products? We don’t know. But we’re concerned by that and watching carefully.”
