I appreciate you bringing Noodalls on to discuss the input delay DF! If you don’t have a 120hz tv, you’re in big trouble online. Thank God I have one. PS5 all day baby💪🏾
Thanks for the analysis, Tom. The half-refresh for distant NPCs isn't unique to SF6 - it seems to be a "feature" of RE Engine games. It happens in RE games too. It's the worst thing about the engine IMO - it really takes me out of the experience because it looks so wrong. :/
I mean it IS a feature, designed to help CPU performance. You make it sound like it's a core issue of RE Engine but the reality is that the developers easily have the option of turning this technique off - and it has been used in different engines and a lot of titles (especially Switch ones).
@@AnimeUniverseDE I remember GUN had this to the point where horses in the distance would simply slide across the horizon 😆 Wish this was a setting you can toggle at least on PC though, kinda like the destructible environment setting in RE4R or something like that
RE Engine was being used in the early development of SFV but as an unfinished framework. Capcom should document and create a new certification method for Game Engineering. The way they have consistently delivering high quality games with barely no issues at launch is incredible and should be followed by many, specially western developers who uses Software Engineering methods that does not goes well for delivering quality games.
So IDR (input delay reduction) mode switches the game’s output to 120hz while keeping the frame rate at 60fps and it takes approx. 30 milliseconds off input latency. Series X|S does this for all games by setting the system refresh rate to 120hz in the system display options. There was a question on a recent DF Direct Weekly podcast. The user asked why does Red Dead Redemption 2 feel so much better on series X. The user had this exact same question, does using 120hz refresh rate on Xbox when games are 60fps improve input latency. I guess we got our answer now. I commented on that video that it’s better to set Xbox to 120hz refresh rate all the time, but the DF staff said they set it to 60hz output when they are playing a 60fps game. Seems like they are under utilizing and don’t speak about a key Xbox advantage!
They've been shilling for PS5 fans for a long time now. Must be their majority audience or something. They always straw man about XBox and never about PS5.
Being able to fight on a 2D plane anywhere at anytime in World Tour’s open world (and with such in-depth mechanics as SF6’s) is nothing short of revolutionary for games as a whole, and definitely for fighters. I remember when MK Deception’s Konquest mode tried to do something similar but had to have loading breaks in between it all, then Armageddon’s said screw it and just had 3D brawler combat.
It's quite disappointing that Capcom phoned it in a bit with the Series S optimizations, using asset quality even lower than the PS4. Like, it's just lazy that they'd see a machine with as much, if not more memory than the PS4 and PS4 Pro and decide to phone it in by just setting everything as low as they can
The Series S version having rough visuals is a shame since it's probably the version a lot of smaller tournaments/locals will use as it's more affordable then a ps5 while still having current gen features like VRR to reduce input delay.
Who cares about visuals when on a budget? It's a budget console for a reason lol, I doubt anyone who's going to buy a series s is even going to play in 4k... and I really don't think they care about visuals at tournaments
every console is a budget compared to a PC does that mean that everything on console should be on low settings 1080p, 30 frames?! This shit is not acceptable, MK11 looks insane on series s and it's running on 1440p.
@@Rohgamu Visuals are low priority but it's not like they don't matter at all. The point is that it could look better, Series S is a more powerful console then PS4 but Capcom didn't put the work in to take advantage of that.
I haven't yet watched the video. But as a note i really like how the game manages to push my 3080 to 90% to run the open world most of the time at 60 fps with just couple slowdowns if im doing things in parallel (watching videos with super sampling and nvidia broadcast running).
I'm guessing Series S version was really the Xbox One version when in development, until they decided to not deal with two extra consoles. There's no way the texture can be that much worse than the base PS4 at the same resolution with significantly better hardware. Those textures clearly belongs to Xbox One.
@@PushStart_YT Yeah that actually explains a lot. It's an abysmal job by Capcom though. It should be in the same ballpark as the PS4 pro with better performance in world tour due to the vastly more powerful CPU.
Happy, in some ways, to hear that the texture streaming issue isn't just me and not just limited to PC users and that it is effecting everyone. Here's hoping it is something Capcom can resolve fairly quickly via a patch. Running the game maxed on a 3090 FE at 1440P, there shouldn't be any hardware reason why the texture streaming/pop in is such an issue in World Tour mode. Everything else runs buttery smooth with all settings on max.
Great overview! I was hoping to see some information on XSX with HDR enabled and how that may impact latency. As it stands my xbox outputs a 120hz signal with HDR enabled. I turned off VRR due to its effects on local dimming on my tv and don't have input delay enabled.
I guess I can consider to be lucky for having an LG C1 with VRR to run on IDR mode. And oh boy, you really feel the difference by the second you press the button. This was one of my most anticipated videos. Excellent work Tom!!!
@@JVCHAMP It's an excellent TV btw! At 18:10 Tom explains it in detail. IDR stands for Input Delay Reduction. it's a mode implemented by Capcom to SF6 that helps reducing input delay for screens with 120hz like LG C1. What it basically does is changing refresh rate to 120hz to input with much less delay, and man, you can really feel it the second you smash the buttons. However, is important to note that the game does not run at 120fps, but at 60fps while the input is receiving data at 120hz, the response will of course will be much lower. It's a genius move for consoles and very helpful for us fighting game fans!
The fact that PS4 Pro runs at 1080p similar to Series S is ironic, but with even poorer textures on Series S? Can we say little to no optimization on Series S? Let's hope some decent patches release, for Series S's much more modern hardware clobbers a PS4 Pro.
in terms of compute it is (1.8TF GCN vs 4TF RDNA), but Series S has huge RAM/VRAM issues that make it barely an improvement over the base PS4 in terms of bandwidth (176GB/s VS 224GB/s 8GB). The extra 2 GB that it has over PS4 are also slower than even base XBOX one's GDDR3 (68GB/s and also had a huge pool of fast ESRAM to compesate). which make them unusable besides system tasks. add that Sony's APIs are also more efficient with resources, closer to the "metal" as they are not meant to be crossplatform like DX12 is and you get why Series S gets either low quality textures, streaming texture issues low resolutions or just poor performance overall.
@@lowfightiq If you think a SSD will save Series S from all the design flaws it has you'll be preparing yourself to get disappointed the whole generation.
@@JaimeIsJaime So a base 2013 PS4 is powerful than a 2020 console? Here's another genius, lol Try to see some other game comparison between base PS4 and Series S, genius.
I'm torn here. It's impressive Capcom was able to get this game to run well on a PS4, but at the same time, disappointing that the Series S version doesn't run better. That's just poor optimization for the Series S version.
Really hoping a PC analysis is coming up because I tried the World Tour mode last night on my i9-10900KF and RTX 3070 and it was microstutter Hell, and the fights with Luke in his training center once I got a little into the story ran 30 FPS suddenly so the game speed became a crawl.
The framerate is really inconsistent. Sometimes it's super smooth and sometimes the framerate is cut in half for seemingly no reason and jumps back up to 60 at similarly random times.
Same. Have a Legion 5 Pro with an RTX 3070 and World Tour Mode is poorly optimized. Some areas will run at 70+ FPS and then at other places it drops down to 40+ FPS and the fights become all sluggish
The World Tour/Yakuza comparison makes me want a Capcom open-world brawler like yesterday ...While we're at it, Namco should bring back the criminally overlooked Urban Reign from PS2. UR wasn't technically open-world (medium size areas selectable via the map). But, the Tekken-style brawling along with some destructable environments and light rpg leveling made UR one of my favorite games just to play whenever. To me it was what Burnout was to racing. ...Namco gushing aside, SF6 is darn impressive in scope and I enjoyed the demo quite a bit. I really want open-world beat 'em ups to make a comeback. Capcom should ressurect Final Fight giving it the RE Engine treatment. The last mainline entry was FF Streetwise. FF definitely needs some love.
Great review, but just out of curiosity, is HDR available for the pc? Does Xbox series X have? Ps5 does not have. Any opinions with regards to the mods for the pc? I realize this is purely a graphics comparison but any ideas about the latency with respect to older ps3 arcade sticks running on the pc?
What the hell happened with the Series S version? There's absolutely no reason the PS4 should have higher resolution textures. Something went very wrong somewhere down the line and I'd love to hear the gritty details.
Ty for the vid, really looking forward to any recommended settings you put out. It runs ok after some back and forth on a i56600 1060 but would like to hear more.

The series S is capable of good graphics at 30 fps as far as i know and the beta and world tour mode are both at 30 and they look better than the other modes that actually matter. I wish they would give us an option to switch to 30fps but with good graphics like in the beta.
@Leiapetz nobody complained when the beta was locked on 30fps. Fps isnt a huge deal in fighters as it is in other games
I remember the beta being 60 tho
@@yarinp23 was it? Im even more upset if it was. Sorry if i said wrong things. I just thought it was 30 because why would the game look worse with 60 now. I just cant keep my eyes of the bad graphics. I didn’t pay for this shit lmao

Agreed
There is no excuse for PS4 having better texture than Series S. Capcom can do better.

Great vid! It was nice to see SF3: Third Strike for a brief moment lol
Been looking forward to this. Great idea getting Nigel Woodall involved 👏🏻
Here's hoping for Alex to give us the PC port rundown and optimization guide in another video.
Is there a downside to enabling IDR? I guess what I'm asking is, why even have the setting if it helps so much? Why wouldn't it just be always on?
It can cause some screen tearing on non VRR displays. Tbh I mostly noticed it on super mover cinematic animations which don't matter. My TV is VRR but I watched a fighting game stream and saw this.
@@owwmykneecap Thanks for your clear explanation! That makes sense! 👍🏻
13:53 A little issue in the video: 70.3 ms it's on PS4 PRO and 71,9 ms it's on PS4. (Watch the full table in 11:34)
Good video as always😉
I’m playing this on series X and it’s great. Weird cutbacks on S. Mortal Kombat, on the other hand is well optimized on Series on S.
So in summary?
Turn on VRR on your monitor settings.
Turn on Input Delay Reduction in the game settings.
Anything else?
Can you do an analysis for the PC version as well? Quite a few of us are having performance problems on the World Tour Mode where we're getting frame rate drops in certain areas when it shouldn't be having that. Would be good to know what's the main cause of it.
Yeah pc version is pretty janky although it generally works
The hair rendering for Ken & Marisa is a bit wonky in World Tour. But otherwise, the game looks & runs great. Though I find it weird that the Series S final game looks worse than the beta.
That said, I’m glad you all are covering input latency for Street Fighter 6. Hopefully you do the same for Mortal Kombat 1 & Tekken 8. And given the results, tournaments will likely have to upgrade away from PS4 eventually for better input latency.
Capcom are poor devs or Sony marketing deal. The hardware in the series s is capable of way more than this.
@@blue-steel7177 Series S should be matching PS4 Pro in visual fidelity while keeping most of the current generation animations, etc. To me this really looks like it is pushing a discontinued Xbox One version of the game. 🤷♂
@@davidandrew6855 I just think they gave this to some temps and said take the series x version and make it run on the series s.
So it’s best to turn IDR on when playing online for sure. Otherwise the input lag is huge and much higher than SF5… IDR is paramount.
The Series S version looks like it’s really bugged visually. The textures especially seem like something that could be fixed??
They are not going to fix that, 100%
My low end PC can't run the online lobby very well (haven't tried World Tour yet) but the battles themselves are perfectly smooth and that's what counts for me. Considering that, it seems strange to me that the Series S version has so many cutbacks. I have a 4 GB GPU and I don't remember the textures looking as bad as on Series S.
Awesome work Tom, thank you for covering input lag as well, please do the same for Tekken 8 and MK1.
Three or four frames of input lage is substantially better than the 8 frames of lag on Street Fighter V when it released.
🤣🪦🤣🪦
@@AnimeUniverseDE I remember GUN had this to the point where horses in the distance would simply slide across the horizon 😆
Wish this was a setting you can toggle at least on PC though, kinda like the destructible environment setting in RE4R or something like that
RE Engine was being used in the early development of SFV but as an unfinished framework.
Absolutely amazing video. Really appreciate the dive into latency numbers!
@@Rohgamu But the beta looked better than the final build.
@@Neoxon619 I thought after the beta they would bump it up to 1440p like the ps4 pro
every console is a budget compared to a PC does that mean that everything on console should be on low settings 1080p, 30 frames?!

Will you be covering the PC version as well?
Ps4 pro is 1440p 60 and series s is 1080p. Capcom is clearly sony's girlfriend
Nah that's square enix. They need to fix this though. Really hope they do for the Series S owners out there.
I noticed the 1080p on the Series S doesn't look like 1080p (more blurry than the ps4 version imo). It looks like it's upscaled with a lot of AA
@@wanderingwobb6300 Exactly
This game is a 13/10 IGN because of Cammy alone. Thank you Capcom.
Wait, why isn't the S changing to 1440p in the classic mode, like the PS5 and SX going to 4K outside of World Tour?
The texture issue is also on PC, along with an odd low mesh bug, hope they'll fix it soon.
They dont care. Capcom and Sony are married. End of story.
This is the first street fighter I’ve bought at launch and have been having a lot of fun with it. Even tho I be getting my ass BEAT.
This is probably the first SF that teaches people that it's ok to lose though, that's how you learn!
Holy pop in, Batman.
That open world area is like an NPC magic show...now you see me, now you don't.
Series S version graphical quality is injustifiable.
I kinda like the more clean visuals of 5 though
Please Capcom, update de visual game for Series S!

Great overview! I was hoping to see some information on XSX with HDR enabled and how that may impact latency. As it stands my xbox outputs a 120hz signal with HDR enabled. I turned off VRR due to its effects on local dimming on my tv and don't have input delay enabled.
How get hdr in xbox in this game?
I guess I can consider to be lucky for having an LG C1 with VRR to run on IDR mode. And oh boy, you really feel the difference by the second you press the button. This was one of my most anticipated videos. Excellent work Tom!!!
I also have Lg C1 whats is this IDR? Curious
@@665Iron reply!! I understood everything thank you! For the reply’ ! I had no idea!!
@DSPGaming claims this video is incorrect, and he knows someone who designed the "Operating System" and the PC has much lower latency.
The fact that PS4 Pro runs at 1080p similar to Series S is ironic, but with even poorer textures on Series S? Can we say little to no optimization on Series S? Let's hope some decent patches release, for Series S's much more modern hardware clobbers a PS4 Pro.
So if my math is correct, in frames, the input delay is 3.44f on PS5, 3.48f on PC, and 3.49f on Xbox Series X?
Series S is much more powerful than base PS4, the texture quality is atrocious here
in terms of compute it is (1.8TF GCN vs 4TF RDNA), but Series S has huge RAM/VRAM issues that make it barely an improvement over the base PS4 in terms of bandwidth (176GB/s VS 224GB/s 8GB).
@@JaimeIsJaime nope, the SSD alone destroys ps4 pro. no reason for it to look worse. except, sabatoge.

@@JaimeIsJaime well, I partially agree with what u just said, but it's the first time when I see a cross platform game looks worse on XSS than on PS4
Try turning off ambient occlusion and screen reflections. That should help most of those instances.
This gives me hope for a potential new MvC
The World Tour/Yakuza comparison makes me want a Capcom open-world brawler like yesterday ...While we're at it, Namco should bring back the criminally overlooked Urban Reign from PS2.
UR wasn't technically open-world (medium size areas selectable via the map). But, the Tekken-style brawling along with some destructable environments and light rpg leveling made UR one of
my favorite games just to play whenever. To me it was what Burnout was to racing. ...Namco gushing aside, SF6 is darn impressive in scope and I enjoyed the demo quite a bit. I really want
open-world beat 'em ups to make a comeback. Capcom should ressurect Final Fight giving it the RE Engine treatment. The last mainline entry was FF Streetwise. FF definitely needs some love.
I guess they fixed Ryu’s beard on Series S, the most jarring missing texture.
Great review, but just out of curiosity, is HDR available for the pc? Does Xbox series X have? Ps5 does not have.

Was the latency with idr on without vrr measured only on 120 Hz displays? Or the same latency was also obtained on 60 Hz displays?

I am not surprised with the screen-space reflection anomalies. The occlusion bug has been in other RE Engine games as well.
