DW your documentaries are amazing. So informative and encouraging. Focus on this and avoid all the drama and negativity you see on other channels. Keep up the good work!
Agent Smith , sorry...we passed that point....not to sound negative , but, I am reminded of another documentary that had mentioned : dark and cold also replicates times after nuclear war... ( because of the large smoke cloud)..So I think the purpose of this endevour leans toward that as well ... to end on a positive note :future colonies on Mars as well would definitely benefit..and I agree that It is a good documentary and science .
I grow up in the Canadian arctic a town called Hay River they need to watch this as I am sure there are people who are doing things like this there it is good to get ideas. No one was growing food indoors when I was a child but last time I went back people had just started to do hydroponics.
Interesting idea, and the science will provide opportunities. Great documnetary, a long way from the history on our Documentary Channel and history will produce.
Why wasn't his restaurant ready yet when I was there? ;-) Sounds great! Arctic food. Much better than the expensive and unhealthy hamburgers and pizza that most places offer on Svalbard.
"I didn't start it to save the world. I just said, 'You know, I want the freshest food possible.'" It's amazing what you can do when you rely on the efficiency of capitalism. You can't save the world with Carbon Taxes and Straw Bans. This dude had one problem, his demand for fresh vegetables. His solution was to do it the most cost-effective and time-efficient way as possible. Now he has a surplus and providing for the demand of other people. Eco activists would have done it over budget and severely mismanaged.
Now ask him how much money he makes lol. People see videos like this or aquaponics and take it for face value. You'll never see a follow up video or updates on growth of the idea. I don't know how he got started but I can tell he is very new and probably costs him money.
But thanks be to higher powers of hospitality and human rights found in democracies that prevent persecutions against any minority foreigners in other lands...
it looks like he's just a guy growing a few veggies in a closet. It a really cool hobby... certainly does not merit a documentary in my opinion. he had like two pepper plants, and enough parsley for a bowl of taboule.
That's pointless. Eat meat and grow mushrooms if you need. It's a hobby for him. If he really needs to do this, grow only sprouts, full of nutrients, grown in just few days. Reindeer meat, sprouts and mushrooms, the ideal diet
They're using all the wrong type of lights.. no halogens, no blurples.. what are you people doing! you're wasting so much energy being so inefficient with your lights. Use Samsung Diode top bin LM561C LEDs use the 4k spectrum
Was thinking the exact same thing whilst watching, these guys need true horticulture diodes. BTW. The LM561c's have been superseded by the 301b's, not worked with them yet, they're still a tad too expensive for a measly 7% gain, but worth noting.
@@stephenarling1667 You're talking rubbish, cutting edge horticulture LED's leave MH's for dust in terms of efficiency. They were trendy, many years ago, however, when the switch was made from low to mid-power they became practical, these days, if done right, LED's can out-perform even Gavita's. FYI I build horticulture LED's.
@@Grumpy-Bollocksoh thanks for the heads up. I built most of my lighting rigs mid 2017 with those 561Cs. Which were the bleeding edge of efficiency at the time. thanks again!
@@Grumpy-Bollocks,LED would give most lumens per watt, but in this application some heat offsets what they must be using in winter to grow herbs in those greenhouses. Are they heating the greenhouses at no cost for utilities?
His accent is probably the result of living in a place where no one speaks American English for so long. When I traveled to Svalbard, I had to be aware of the way I talked. Even though everyone speaks English as a second language, I had to make a lot of effort to avoid "Americanisms" so I could be understood. I could see myself talking just like him after a few years of living in Svalbard. He probably also speaks Norwegian and Russian - two major languages up there - in his daily life, which would also influence his accent.
Whether one is lgbt or cishet minority, american foreigner, or native scandivinavian, the life of a minority involves living at night in isolation from others...
I appreciated the ability of that man in growing vegetables in such harsh environment, however I'm strongly against slaughtering reindeers to eat because they are living beings and deserve to live like that man likes also to live. So sad, human beings are so bloody. Vampires!
Benjamin's passion and urgency is contagious
Great Documantaries as always DW team!, we would love to see a documentary on urban gardening!
Superb Work Chef Mr. Benjamin and Team DW Documentary..👍👌💐

It's funny how he's originally from Florida, but has an accent when he speaks now 😂 very fascinating documentary!
Hahahaha, real talk.
He's clearly a Latino. The accent shows that most likely his language at home was either Spanish or Portuguese.
he should do mashrooms, they grow in dark and very fast...
that'a true

agriculture is HARD let me tell you this
"want to have an Arctic Fusion menu with ... like ... a reindeer taco." @_0
"We're not going to have any burgers or pizza....but we will have tacos" - lmfao yeah that's very Arctic alright ))

Fascinating!
I wondered about if it was possible.
it s just brilliant!!!
good show!!!

tomatoes and cucumbers are bad ideas because they need much longer time to yield edible parts, which will slow down the turnover.
Hothouse tomatoes are successfully grown in Canada in winter.
Please help! What is the light that they use for the plant growth? For research purposes.
Good luck to this mate
I need sunshine 🌞
Oh YEAH!!!!!!!!!! GROW!!!!!!!!!!!
Wooow! 😊😊😊

amazing
anyone recognize the company that provides the germination domes and trays @ 0:52?
Good video.
how do mint leaves grown there taste like?
Awesome :D
~Impressive...and quite fascinating!
Couldnt you just replicate the same setup that weed growers use? High wattage lights and pump co2 into the room?
Hoped it was some other form of greens :D
ok

why not setup a aquaponic enviroment?
Maybe the chef doesn't know about that technique, at least in the summer the water wouldn't freeze so fast
@@luisfernando55 since its a greenhouse, the water should be okay to as well even in the winter.

My uncle was growing weed in his basement same way in '80, there is nothing revolutionary in this, ask any stoner lol!

Metal halides are efficient plant lights and add some heat too. LEDs are just trendy, not always the best economy.

His accent is nothing like that of an american.
Are you talking about the narrator? If so, he sounds exactly like Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.
