This song made the saddest part of hell on wheels ten times sadder
That's questionable, depends on if you think him leaving his wife and son was sadder, or him killing his friend Elam, or Ruth being hung for the wrong reason.
I think ruth being hung was the saddest part

The saddest part was Cullen burying Elam and only time he cried even though he was surrounded by Death

Opie's funeral DESTROYED me. To this day I can't hear "The Lost Boy" without crying. 😭 This song has a similar effect on me because of Lily Bell.

Are we sure that this is the right band? Every other BRMC song I've listened to in the related videos are like alt rock type songs with heavy drums and electric guitar, not at all like this.

they have one album thats all like this called howl and my least favorite brmc album
"Howl" is the masterpiece to me, and a bit softer guitaring / drumming than most of their albums. Just beautiful grassroot blues rock prog. Free flowing and sincere, heart melting and deep. Check out "The line" for a more prog, long form epic song.

It's not written in lyrical poetry. It's blank verse poetry. Note the strict meter (rhythm / number of beats per line / arrangement of emphasized syllables and non-emphasized syllables). Only it doesn't rhyme. This is an excellent lament.

Paul Carty but it doesn't have a strict meter. the first two lines are ten syllables, then eleven, the last line is twelve. The first line is iambic pentameter but the fourth line ends on an incomplete iamb.
it's still a good song and a good example of a blank verse dirge with rhythmic language but to say the structure is "strict" is a bit of a reach.
