    The guy explaining Taylor's masters deal may not know the whole story much. So, it's alright if he got it wrong. If anyone wishes to know how this whole ordeal unfolds, this is pretty much the insights that you need. Do remember that all these have been widely reported in the media sphere, the receipts are there, so you can look for and read about this whole thing online for the entirety of the event.
    The truth was, she did wish to buy them, and she was given the opportunity to do so by her previous label, but with a catch. The deal that the label dished out to her was, she would be able to own them provided that she produce one new album for a previously released album. If she went through with the deal, she would have to make one album to own one of her previous albums. That's six new albums for the first six albums (you can fact check this online, this was reported all over the news realm. she also clarified this and produced all receipts, including the deal that stated such). She saw this pattern might continue with all those new albums as well if she was required to hand in a new album for each album she previously released.
    So, she decided not to go with the deal and eventually leave her previous label. She chose to be signed to Universal's Republic. Fun fact, her previous albums that she produced under her old labels were distributed by Universal because the label had a distribution deal with them for their artistes releases, as the label was an independent label (I think the label is still independent and the distribution deal is still ongoing). The value of the deal was not and is still not known. Forbes reported during that time the deal could be worth in the north of a 9-figure number, but it had been disputed by UMG themselves. But given the magnitude of her power in the industry, you can guess that it is possible for UMG and Republic to dish out that kind of number to her. One of the most important part of the deal which she made known to the public as part of her new deal with them was that she would be able to keep her future recordings from then on (starting from Lover onward, which was her first album produced for and released under Republic). In addition to that, another crucial part of the deal was she was able to have Universal promised to distribute a non-recoupable share of the future sales of Spotify shares to all artistes under Universal including those who are unable to recover their advances.
    Some time later, her previous label was sold by the label's head (it had been known that the label head had actually been looking for opportunity to sell the label for a while), and along with the label sales, the masters of her first six studio albums. The label was sold for around USD300 million (the masters of her first six albums made up half of the price tag). She was furious because while she did not intend to buy them at the time, she didn't really count on SB to buy and own the masters. SB has been known to have been a bully to her (along with Justin, which he later apologised), and also in the industry as a person with a pretty bad reputation (he is currently facing a lot of legal issues with a lot of people. you can google this up online if you want to. his latest legal woe is a USD200 million lawsuit).
    I think there is some truth to it that SB isn't necessarily a person that can be trusted. Ariana Grande once dropped him as her manager before taking him back, and from what was spoken on the Internet, it was thought that she took him back because he kept a lot of Ariana's secrets and probably threatened her with them if she dropped him. Plus, Ariana didn't want to put "ghostin'" on TY,N because the song was incredibly personal to her that she didn't feel comfortable letting the song be known and included in the album. But it was still included, it was known that SB pushed her into finally putting it in the album.
    It is also important to note that before she ever started going on rerecording her album (Fearless was the first one rerecorded and released), both SB's team and TS's team did talk to one another once again over the ownership of the masters. According to TS herself (she clarified about this on her social media. The receipts were there and it was widely reported), she was able to own her masters back, given that she signed "an ironclad NDA" that wouldn't allow her to speak unfavorably about him again. And she refused again, because she took it as him trying to silence her from speaking her truth and the truth about who he was. She went through with rerecording, and SB sold her masters once again to another company (I think it was a Disney-owned equity firm, someone can clarify this, or you can look for it online. Again, this has been widely reported). There was no specific reason as to why the masters was sold for the second time, but I believe it's possibly due to the mounting backlash he received from purchasing them, the intense media and industry scrutiny of the deal he made with her previous label which included the masters, and realisation that the masters would eventually lose their value once she produced a new recording for each of those masters. Her masters was sold twice behind her back. The reason why she knew they were sold the second time around was because the equity firm was kind enough to let her know about the deal (TS received an email from the firm and it was published on her social media) but was unable to inform her beforehand because SB wouldn't allow them to let her know before the deal went through.
    And I think there was another reason why she refused her masters as well and refused to work with the firm regarding any future plans related to the masters. And yes, the firm actually expressed their wish to work things out with her regarding the masters. She got to know one of the details in the deal that SB and the firm made, and that was, while SB wouldn't be the owner of the masters anymore, he would still be receiving some percentage of the masters royalty for years to come from anything that is planned around the masters or anything related to them if there's any.

She was not given the opportunity to own them. Scooter bought the company. he then offered to discuss her buying them FROM HIM but demanded an NDA without even agreeing to a meeting.

Imagine you sign a contract at 15 and then they just own the music you created in perpetuity, because you can't afford to front $300 million, he almost looked gleeful at an artist not being allowed to own their art, and a quick google search would have told you she wasn't offered to buy her albums back. she was offered a deal where every future album she released with her old label would have got one album back at a time, this was confirmed the label boss

  • @christycampbell2410
    @christycampbell2410 Год назад +23

    I think Andrew Schulz is super funny. I’m a fan. I can feel that way, and get annoyed at what bullshit this is. I agreed w/ a lot of what DJ Akademics said. I really appreciate him acknowledging her business acumen, and giving her props for it ,without making tired jokes about her being calculating. Andrew, informing him she turned down the opportunity to buy her Masters, when he obviously knows nothing about the context. “She’s been crying about it for a year” or whatever he said, made my blood boil. I’m just being honest. Scott Borchetta offered to let her buy her Master’s, a catalogue of her own work, hit song after hit song, that he & Big Machine had already made 100s of millions off of. He wanted a little over $300 million, that’s what the catalogue was worth. That’s fair enough. However, in addition to her paying full price, he wanted her to agree to sign with him again. He owes his entire career to her. She was the first artist signed to Big Machine, and she remained the label’s most successful artist for the entire time she was with them. If you look at the roster of other artists he signed, all combined they probably didn’t earn what she did for the label by herself. He sold the catalogue to Scooter Braun to punish her. It was purchased for the same price she would have paid. There was no bidding war. When she didn’t re-sign with label, the offer was off the table for her. She was understandably angry. She voiced her anger in public. Then, she set about re-recording all the songs Braun purchased. Radio took her side. They play her versions now. Every re-recorded album has included bonus tracks fans haven’t heard before, or heard in the same way. And they’ve all been huge successes. She’s made records she never could have made with Big Machine, and they’ve earned her a huge new slew of fans. Braun sold the catalogue because he could see the writing on the wall. Taylor was going to make his investment worthless. And, far from punishing her, Borchetta ended up saving her $300 mil. She owns the only catalogue anyone wants anything to do with. Schulz dismissed (and probably didn’t know anything about) all of this. The kicker was the eye roll at her saying she was treated unfairly because she’s a women. If a man did what she did, he’d be a hero, everyone would think he was amazing. Look at the way Schulz talked about her here. He made her sound like an entitled crybaby who scapegoats sexism instead of owning her mistakes. If the same exact situation happened to a dude, there’s no way his take would be as negative.

  • @Starbuck-dr7yl
    @Starbuck-dr7yl Год назад +5

    If you are going to throw shade, at least get your facts straight. You are mistaken. She was not given the opportunity to buy her masters, you made that up. The offer was that her label would “gift” her one of her back albums for every new album she produced. Thereby meaning she would NEVER own her masters. So she said fine, I’m walking. she has NEVER complained about walking. She knew he would eventually sell, she wasn’t upset necessarily about the sell but about who they were sold to. Keeping in mind, Scooter didn’t have the money and had to borrow it and then trolled her on social media. THAT is why she got upset. She didn’t get upset because a MAN bought a WOMAN’s work, she was upset that men tried to control her work and that Scooter was the one who bought her work. This was 100% about Scooter.
    Basically, the label Big Machine Records, an indie label signed Taylor at age 14, she was their FIRST signee, their only signee. They had no money, they signed her against the advice from all of Nashville. And 15 yrs later SHE accounted for nearly 80% of their revenue. 80%. The owner of the label, Scott Borschetta, wanted to sell the company. He knew it was worthless without her catalog. HE couldn’t SELL her the catalog, he needed it. So no, he didn’t offer for her to purchase her masters, he needed them to sell the company. Her 15 yr contract was up, HE had two options: get her to re-sign but negotiate the “give you one, we get one offer”, or not. He didn’t Sell Her Masters, he sold the company. The company needed the masters in order to sell, because it was the value. Scooter bought the entire company in order to get her masters. Which he only kept a very short time. He realized he could not put out albums with her music and have people purchase it without her consent. And, no Sync licenses. And, he needed to repay his investors. He sold quickly. This is no longer about Scooter because he doesn’t own them. But she was going to prove a point, so it turned into a bigger stance about artists owning their work and inspiring countless other artists to do the same. It turned into countless meetings with label executives to negotiate ways so that the artist can own their work but the label makes money too. She has been doing all this behind the scenes to help all artists. She negotiated IN HER OWN CONTRACT perks for other artists so that they get more benefits because she knows she makes more than others, so she negotiated some of that will go to them. Really, if you are going to throw shade, at least know your topic. Don’t make things up about her turning down the purchase price and then getting made because MEN own her music, if this is your job, dude, put in the work to know your topic before you make such a bonehead comment.

      @@adimatondo284 I'm not a fan of either one. But to claim they're overrated or not talented is just BS. Music is subjective. You either feel it or you don't and If you dont' then move on. Don't be a hater bro. It isn't a good look.

    I'm a big fan of Taylor Swift but not a big fan of this latest album I'm not a big fan of Jack antonoff. All of his songs including the ones he's done for the Lorde and Lana they all just sound the same to me. Taylor is an amazing musician and she doesn't need to use him.

      The music sounds the same if you're not exposed to that kinda music. Rock and Metal songs used to sound the same for me. Not anymore.
